Man arrested for Bethesda kidnapping
BETHESDA, Md. (DC News Now) — A 31-year-old man has been arrested for the Friday kidnapping of a woman in Bethesda, according to the Montgomery County Police Department.
Police say Robert Deeter, of Bethesda, faces kidnapping, first-degree assault, stalking, harassment, and multiple handgun charges.
Woman kidnapped in Bethesda, police say
According to police, officers received reports of a kidnapping at 2:33 p.m. Friday.
Officers located Deeter's red Toyota RAV4 in the 7000 block of Democracy Boulevard, with a woman in the passenger seat, and began following him.
According to police, the woman jumped out of the car as they approached Rockledge Drive and I-270, where she confirmed with officers that Deeter had kidnapped her at gunpoint.
The woman added that she knew him before the kidnapping.
Officers continued to follow the car to the area of Old Georgetown Road and Beech Avenue, resulting in Deeter refusing to exit the car and barricading himself inside.
Police say the Emergency Response Team (ERT) negotiators began speaking with the suspect, and the man eventually surrendered. The man was arrested, and a firearm was seized from the car.
Deeter remains in custody without bond.

DC mother found guilty of murder for death of 16-month-old daughter
WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — A D.C. woman was found guilty of murder Wednesday in the death of her 16-month-old daughter in March 2017. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office (USAO) for the District of Columbia, 39-year-old Faneisha Scott was found guilty of first-degree murder, first-degree cruelty to children and second-degree cruelty to children. Scott went outside and flagged down a mail carrier, who called 911 and went back into Scott's apartment with her. The mail carrier saw 'Rhythm on the couch, lifeless. The child's body was cold, her body was stiff, and her eyes were fixed,' the USAO said. The mail carrier remained on the phone with 911 until two others entered to give Rhythm CPR. The USAO said that one of these individuals was an experienced former firefighter who immediately recognized that Rhythm was dead. Medical Examiner's Office did an autopsy on Rhythm's body and ruled in February of 2018 that she had been killed and that her cause of death had been multiple blunt force injuries. 3 DC police cruisers struck, 4 officers injured in Northeast crash
WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Four officers were hurt after three Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) cruisers were struck on Wednesday. DC man arrested in 14 alleged vehicle-related thefts According to police, the crash occurred on 62nd and Dix Street Northeast, following a stolen vehicle pursuit in the area. A Mercedes with Virginia plates was stolen out of D.C. and hit three cruisers. The four officers were taken to hospitals while conscious and breathing. Trial begins for Maryland man accused of dismembering second-grade teacher
UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (DC News Now) – Tuesday, in Prince George's County, opening arguments began in the trial of Harold Landon III, a Maryland man accused of murdering and dismembering second-grade teacher Mariame Torre Sylla in 2023. Sylla went for an evening walk in a park near her apartment before disappearing in late July. Searches went on for the teacher until her body was later found dismembered near a pond in Clinton. Prince George's County Police worked with Greenbelt Police to discover a torso at a pond in Clinton. A test later found that the torso was Sylla's. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Charging documents outline disturbing details of murder of beloved Greenbelt teacher Police then used witnesses and surveillance in the area to find a white Chevy Silverado in the area around the time the body was discarded. That truck belonged to Landon, who also lived in the same neighborhood and was, according to the prosecution, seen at the same park where Sylla was last seen. In the opening statements, State's Attorney Aisha Braveboy described Sylla as a loving teacher and mother. Prosecutors brought in witness testimony and pictures of the scene, including photos of the dismemberment. State prosecutors also say they have video and DNA evidence linking Landon and Sylla, but Landon's defense says the state won't provide a motive. Sylla taught at Dora Kennedy French Immersion School, a community that is hoping for justice for their beloved teacher. 'Terrible,' said parent Noura Estatie. 'Teachers, they take care of our kids…I hope you know, her family gets [the] justice that they seek.' The trial is expected to go into next week.
