2025 Oxford vs Cambridge Boat Race Preview, Prediction & Odds
The 2025 Boat Race takes place on Sunday and once again all the talk in the build-up has been about the water quality rather than the quality of the teams.
Following Oxford's defeat in the men's race 12 months ago, they complained about sewage levels, and organisers say that the water quality is an "ongoing concern' with levels of E. coli bacteria almost three times above the Environment Agency's threshold.
Last year, three members of the Oxford team went down with illness before the race, which they blamed on the water quality, but everyone would much rather be talking about the race itself this time around.
This year's men's race (2.21pm, BBC One) will be the 170th, after first being held in 1829 and becoming an annual fixture in 1856, while it's only been 10 years since the women's race was switched ton the same day and course as their male counterparts.
Cambridge has won seven consecutive women's titles but their chances this year were dealt a blow last month when the selection rules changed, stopping PGCE students from competing, ruling out two of their original women's team, as well as one from the men's boat.
Betting sites are still backing Cambridge in the women's race (1.21pm, BBC One), at odds of 2/9 over the 4.2 miles between Putney and Mortlake, while Oxford are a 3/1 chance.
Stats Support Oxford Win
Cambridge have also dominated the men's race in recent years, winning five of the last six encounters and this year they are going for the hat trick.
But if you like statistics, you might want to back an Oxford win because the dark blues have the edge in post-Olympic races, having won the last five.
Their last defeat after an Olympics was back in 2001, a year after Steve Redgrave won his fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal in Sydney.
Oxford's men are a 7/4 shout on some betting apps, and the value may lie with them to win what will be a hotly contested race, given the recent wranglings over selection.

Dundee boss Steven Pressley expects new arrivals at Dens Park
Steven Pressley is optimistic he will soon be able to strengthen his Dundee squad after suffering an injury blow. Midfielder Paul Digby faces up to six weeks out but Pressley expects new additions after Saturday's William Hill Premiership encounter at Kilmarnock. On his transfer business, Pressley said: 'It's highly unlikely to happen before the weekend but we have a couple of targets we are very close on that we believe will happen. 'One of them being a midfielder that we think will come in early next week. Both ourselves and the club want it to happen, the player wants it to happen, it's just a matter of timing. 'And we have also not got an agreement in place with a club, but we believe we are getting close to that, for a player in another position. 'I think it will make a big difference. Competition for places creates consistency of performance. I want players to be under pressure to keep their positions. That type of environment breeds success. 'I don't want too big a squad, I want a squad of players that are very much manageable and feel part of it, but I want them to be breathing down each other's shoulders to be playing.' Digby has been an ever-present since joining from Cambridge and played the full game as Dundee drew at Ibrox last time out. Pressley said: 'Paul Digby, who played exceptionally well against Rangers and has been a pivotal player, has a calf injury. It could be anything up to five, six weeks before we see him return. So that's a big blow.' Get all the latest news from around the country Follow STV News Scan the QR code on your mobile device for all the latest news from around the country

Value Scope: Each way horseracing tips from Steve Jones for Thursday at York on ITV
Our each way experts reckons there is plenty of value to be found among the card for day two of the Ebor Festival at York and has four selections Sit back and enjoy the Journey on the second day of York's Ebor Festival. AMAZING JOURNEY (4.45) won a Chepstow novice race before making a successful handicap debut when a smooth winner at this track in July. Both of those races were over 6f and he might well have completed the hat-trick when upped to 7f for the first time at Goodwood. He was just starting to wind up his challenge when he ran into traffic and he couldn't quicken on the testing ground when the gaps appeared. There looks to be lots of pace in the race and that should set things up for Jamie Osborne's youngster. Have 1pt each-way at 10-1. Sky Bet is paying out on six places. Earlier on the card, SONG OF THE CLYDE (2.25) is an interesting runner in the Harry's Half Million By Goffs sales race. He did well to overcome trouble coming out of the stalls to win a Chester maiden in June. His second to smart all-the-way winner Egoli at Newbury last month was another good effort and we certainly haven't seen the best of him. He will attempt to give his trainer Clive Cox his third successive victory in this valuable race. Have 1pt each-way at 11-1. Sky Bet is going five places. Free £2 Shop Bet with William Hill inside your Mirror every day of the York Ebor Festival THE big guns are being readied and loaded to fire at York's Ebor Festival which starts on Wednesday August 20, 2025- and your Mirror is bringing you everything you need to celebrate the final flourish of the racing season including FREE shop bets from William Hill. Don't miss your paper every day of the festival, from Wednesday August 20 until Saturday August 23, 2025, to get your hands on packed pullouts, free £2 shop bets, and insight from the racing team you trust. Find out more here. NORTHERN EXPRESS (3.00) has plenty of form around York and he looks overpriced in the Clipper Handicap. Like many of Michael Dods' team, he wasn't at his best earlier in the season but he gave it a good go from the front when attempting to win the competitive International Handicap for the second year running at Ascot last month. He couldn't quite see it out in a race run at a sound pace and this easier track over slightly further should allow him to get into a nice rhythm on the lead. Have 1pt each-way at 18-1. Sky Bet is offering six places. ROGUE SENSATION (5.20) is worth chancing in the final race. She ran well in a Haydock Listed race on her return to action and she seemed to appreciate the 7f distance when runner-up at Chester three weeks ago. Ed Bethell's filly didn't get the clearest of runs and this more conventional track should also help. Her trainer has really hit form in the last few weeks. Have 1pt each-way at 20-1. Most bookies are paying out on five places.

Moses Itauma should take ‘baby steps' before fighting Oleksandr Usyk
Chatham southpaw Itauma extended his perfect record through 13 professional fights with an impressive first-round knockout of British rival Dillian Whyte in Riyadh on Saturday. The 20-year-old's devasting performance against former WBC interim heavyweight champion Whyte, 37, saw Tyson Fury claim Itauma would beat undisputed world heavyweight champion Usyk. 'Moses would beat Usyk now' 👀@Tyson_Fury believes Moses Itauma is the real deal 🤝 — Queensberry Promotions (@Queensberry) August 17, 2025 Itauma, though, played down talk of calling out the Ukrainian in his post-fight comments, instead focusing on the likes of contenders Agit Kabayel or Joseph Parker, who is the WBO interim champion and next in line for a shot at Usyk. Khan, 38, turned professional after claiming a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics, going on to unify his own division – and feels Itauma's 'time will come' if he takes things steady under the watchful eye of Queensberry promoter Frank Warren. 'He was fighting like a middleweight or even a lightweight with the movement and speed he had, how quick he was throwing those shots, they were all so clean and accurate,' Khan told the PA news agency. 'He was very balanced, was calm and collected. The guy is going to go far and when you see talent like that, you think 'amazing'. Moses Itauma is the real deal. We all just witnessed something special. — Frank Warren (@FrankWarren) August 16, 2025 'I know Frank will steadily promote him the right way and also get him the right fights at the right time. 'I know people are talking about Usyk, but I think that is way too early because he is going to end up getting hurt. 'You don't want to take a defeat like that, because you will never be the same fighter again. 'Usyk is the pinnacle, and maybe one of the best ever, out of the heavyweights, so he (Warren) can't really put him in with a great just yet, but his time will come. 'At the moment, I think someone like Parker would be a great move or (Filip) Hrgovic, who has just had a good win as well. 'These are fighters that he needs to fight, maybe to keep taking those baby steps instead of taking the big steps.' Khan added: 'Imagine after I had won that Commonwealth (lightweight) title (in 2007) that they had put me straight into a world title fight against someone like Tim Bradley or Devon Alexander – I wasn't ready for that. 'Even though I would have said I would have jumped in the ring with them – because at that age you want to go into the ring with anyone and everyone – but you have to be smart and I am sure Itauma has a good team around him.' A post shared by Amir Khan (@amirkhanpromotions) Khan's AK Promotions company has partnered with Balmoral Group Promotions to stage 'Chaos in the Ring' in Lagos, Nigeria on October 1, which will feature the return of Rocky Fieldingon against Brandon Glanton as well as Dan Azeez and Elvis Ahorgah. 'We are opening new doors. Africa is a country that no one has done shows in and we are the first to go,' said Khan, who also promoted a show in Ghana during June when cruiserweight Andrew Tabiti stopped home favourite Jacob Dickson. 'You have got a lot of great fighters from Nigeria, so I am sure they will want to come and show support in this event.'
