PGI launches Sarathi feedback app to monitor patient experience of volunteer assistance

In a move to further enhance patient support services, the PGIMER's flagship volunteer initiative, 'Project Sarathi,' has now been expanded beyond the National Service Scheme (NSS) framework to welcome all interested student volunteers, encouraging broader community participation in patient care.
In another key development, the institute has launched a dedicated mobile application for collecting patient feedback. The Sarathi feedback app will now be made available to each volunteer, who will gather real-time feedback from patients and attendants after offering them assistance. This data will enable the administration to make informed decisions and continually improve the quality of services.
Sharing his thoughts on the application, Vivek Lal, Director, PGIMER, stated: 'Project Sarathi has been a heartening example of how structured community involvement can transform hospital services. The expansion of volunteer participation and the launch of the feedback app is another step in our commitment to patient-centred care and continuous improvement'.
Pankaj Rai, Deputy Director (Administration), PGIMER, said that the decision to expand beyond the NSS was taken considering the consistently positive response received through daily interactions among Sarathi volunteers, hospital staff, and patients.
'Recognising the immense value that volunteers bring in simplifying the patient journey at PGIMER, the institute is now opening the doors for students from all academic backgrounds and institutions to be part of this compassionate initiative,' Rai added.
'Project Sarathi, since its inception, has played a vital role in assisting patients and their families in navigating the large and often complex PGI system. Volunteers serve as a vital link, particularly for those from rural or underserved backgrounds, by offering clear guidance, emotional reassurance, and human connection during stressful times,' he further said.

Those on specific medications—such as antibiotics, blood thinners, or chemotherapy drugs—may also need to defer donation. Smokers and those with tattoos can still donate. Just ensure the tattoo was done at a certified centre (or wait one year if it wasn't). Also, avoid alcohol for at least 12 hours before donating. Does blood donation make you weak? This is one of the most common myths. 'There's no weakness. It's only in the mind,' said Dr Krishna Kumar Rai, Head of Emergency Medicine at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad. Dr Amita Mahajan added, 'Your body replenishes the donated blood within days. There's no long-term impact on your strength or immunity.' The key is to stay hydrated, have a light meal beforehand, and avoid strenuous activity for a few hours afterward. Is blood donation safe? Yes, blood donation is completely safe when done at certified blood banks and hospitals. According to Dr Rahul Bhargava, Principal Director at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, donors might feel mild fatigue or light-headedness briefly, but serious complications are extremely rare. Modern practices ensure safety through strict hygiene and single-use sterile needles. For recipients, risks of transfusion-related infections like HIV or Hepatitis have significantly reduced due to advanced screening protocols. Can you donate blood if you are on medication? It depends. Dr Sangeeta Agarwal, Director of Transfusion Medicine at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, said that people taking vitamins or managing controlled blood pressure or diabetes (without insulin) can usually donate. However, if you're on antibiotics, steroids, antidepressants, chemotherapy drugs, or blood thinners, it's best to consult a doctor. Always disclose all medications to the blood bank team during pre-screening—they'll guide you accordingly. Can women safely donate blood? Yes, women can and should donate blood. There are no gender-based restrictions. However, they should avoid donating during menstruation and wait four months between donations. 'Women are often wrongly discouraged from donating blood,' said Dr Rai. 'The truth is, women's bodies are just as capable of handling blood donation as men's.' Can you donate blood after recovering from Covid-19? Yes. If you've recovered from Covid-19 and are feeling well, you are eligible to donate blood. Dr Rai stressed that there is no stigma or risk of transmitting Covid-19 through blood donation. 'If you're fully recovered, you're welcome to donate and save lives,' he said. How should you prepare before donating blood? Here's a simple checklist: Stay well-hydrated Eat light, healthy food about an hour before Avoid alcohol for at least 12 hours prior Skip heavy workouts before and after donation Avoid smoking two hours before and after donating Carry a valid ID and disclose any medications to the medical staff What are the benefits of donating blood? Besides saving lives, blood donation offers emotional and potential health rewards. 'It's like a noble high,' said Dr Rai, who donates every year on his birthday. Some studies suggest that regular donors may enjoy improved heart health and reduced oxidative stress. Above all, it fosters a sense of purpose. 'Every healthy person eligible should donate,' said Dr Sangeeta Agarwal. 'You never know whose life you could save—your friend, a stranger, or a colleague. Blood banks only work when we all pitch in.'

Chandigarh: In a move that could significantly impact public healthcare budgets and patient affordability, AMRIT (Affordable Medicines and Reliable Implants for Treatment) pharmacies have introduced handling charges, potentially draining Rs 35 crore annually from hospital funds across India. PGIMER Chandigarh, which houses nine AMRIT outlets—the highest in the country—is expected to be hit hardest. Originally launched to provide affordable medicines to critically ill patients, AMRIT pharmacies are now demanding a 17.5% mark-up, a sharp rise from the 7% proposed two years ago. PGI officials are holding negotiations with AMRIT to limit the mark-up to 7% and protect patient interests. Although the payment structure is technically government-to-government, the increased costs are expected to indirectly affect patients, many of whom rely on these stores for essential medications. Previously, AMRIT outlets did not charge any handling fees, making them a vital resource for affordable treatment. Concerns are also growing over the quality and pricing of drugs sold at these stores. Patients have reported that AMRIT outlets are increasingly stocking branded generics with high profit margins, resulting in only marginal savings—around 15%—compared to private pharmacies outside the hospital. This undermines the initiative's original goal of making treatment more accessible. The situation has also reignited debate over PGI's long-pending proposal to establish its own pharmacy, modelled after SGPGI Lucknow's successful in-house system. Proposed in 2017, the plan involved direct procurement from manufacturers, bypassing middlemen and offering deeper discounts. Despite identifying space for the pharmacy, the project was never implemented. Faculty members now question the continued dependence on private players, especially when a self-reliant model could offer better control over pricing and quality. As discussions continue, the focus remains on ensuring that patient welfare is not compromised, and that public healthcare initiatives stay true to their mission of affordability and accessibility.

Drug Free Ernakulam campaign launched to free colleges from drug abuse

Kochi: Industries minister P Rajeeve on Sunday launched a Drug Free Ernakulam initiative at Collectorate Conference Hall, with the aim of freeing colleges from the clutches of drug abuse. The initiative will coordinate anti-drug activities implemented by police and excise departments in the district. This is a continuation of the anti-drug activities being implemented at schools. The project will include all colleges in govt, aided, and private sectors, including medical, engineering and nursing colleges. In addition to making drug eradication possible, efforts will be made to reintegrate students who are addicted to drugs back into life through counselling and treatment. Various programmes under the name 'drug-free campus' would be organised in the colleges from Aug 1 to 15, the minister said. All colleges have been instructed to formulate an anti-drug policy. The college that formulates the best policy and performs excellently in making the campus drug-free would receive a special award from the district collector, the minister announced. College protection groups will be formed as a gift to the existing school protection groups by July 31. These groups, implemented in collaboration with the excise department's Neerkootam committees, will play a significant role in securing campuses. Police and excise officers will be included in these groups along with college principals, teachers and parents. At present, college protection groups have been formed in 48 colleges in the district. The station house officer or excise officer of the respective area will be the conveners of the groups. Organisations like NCC, NSS and NGOs will also be part of this.
