Through my eyes: Dani Wilson Naqvi shares her favourite travel destinations

What's On19-07-2025
Each month, we ask a local UAE legend about their favourite places to eat, shop and explore around the emirates. But for this travel special, we're going global. So we've tapped Dani Wilson Naqvi ( @daniwilsonnaqvi ), luxury travel designer and founder of Unique Family Travels ( @uniquefamilytravel ) for her favourite spots worldwide. As a travel specialist who's ticked 55 countries off her bucket list, she's well equipped to share the best places on the planet for all vacation styles. Top staycation spot
I love the Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi Desert for family trips as we enjoy the desert activities and get to explore RAK with unique experiences such as the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp and zipling across Jebel Hafeet. A definite favourite of my family is Atlantis The Royal, as the family can enjoy Aquaventure from morning to night, there's an endless choice of mouth-watering restaurants, and lots of water activities.
@ritzcarltonalwadidesert, @atlantistheroyal Bucket list family trip
A safari in Africa is a must for all families. The most incredible safari experience I have had was in Botswana in the Okavango Delta where we canoed in the Okavango and witnessed many truly wonderful sights. For first-timers, I would recommend Kenya. I work with many luxury lodges that are more private and located in private conservancies, so you get to escape the crowds and have a more up-close experience. A must-try meal
One of my best memories was at the 3 Michelin Star Mirazur in Menton on the border of France and Italy. We were staying in Monaco and drove to the restaurant, which took 30 minutes. All the ingredients served are grown on the side of the mountain around the restaurant, perfectly encapsulating the farm-to-table experience.
@restaurantmirazur Favourite hotel
Bisate Lodge (pictured above) in Rwanda is one of the most incredible hotels – so much so that it actually made me cry. The story behind it is very empowering as it was built by the local villagers, it's located in Volcanoes National Park, close to where you can trek with the gorillas. Aside from that, I love Nihi Sumba on Sumba Island in Indonesia, Soneva Jani or Soneva Fushi in the Maldives for the Robinson Crusoe experience, Gleneagles for a country retreat in Scotland, and Belmond Splendido in Portofino for a romantic couples' break.
@bisatelodge, @nihi, @soneva, @thegleneagleshotel, @belmondsplendidomare A destination everyone should visit
cape town whatson.ae, South Africa. There is something magical about this city. From the amazing hikes to the spectacular vineyard Estates, driving the Garden Route to Hermanus to whale watch, and visiting the penguins at Boulders Beach – the vibe in Cape Town is unmatched. Under-the-radar destination
Raja Ampat in Indonesia, known as The Last Paradise on Earth. We went as a family sailing around the islands for 10 days. From diving and snorkelling with manta rays, to hiking the untouched islands, it was raw and beautiful. The team set up beach days and dinner on private sandbanks, we kayaked around islands and relaxed on the most incredible boat, which had 15 staff to assist with every need. Easily one of my bucket list moments.

Restaurant Review: La Petite Maison Abu Dhabi

La Petite Maison at The Galleria, Al Maryah Island, is a love letter to French flair. From buttery snails to dreamy desserts, this fine dining favourite delivers on flavour, charm and style. Here's our review of this Abu Dhabi fine dining favourite. The Spot La Petite Maison sits inside The Galleria on Al Maryah Island in Abu Dhabi. The Michelin-starred restaurant began as a charming restaurant in the old town of Nice in the 1980s. It was founded by Nicole Rubi, a French woman of Italian descent who believed in simple, honest food made exceptionally well. Her philosophy travelled and now there are restaurants in London, Dubai, Hong Kong, Riyadh, Doha, Miami, Limassol, and Abu Dhabi. The Vibe Crisp white tablecloths glow against the bright coloured art on the walls. Every fork, every glass, every fold of napkin is precise. In the middle of the room, the staff gather like they're backstage at a play. Sleeves are rolled, aprons are tied. There's a hum in the air, not from guests but from the team getting into position. French music plays in the background as the barman mixes pink mocktails with the care of someone mixing perfume. Then, without warning, the staff let out a shout. It's part war cry, part theatre. A signal. And with that, the doors open and service begins. Food and Drinks LPM's food is French Mediterranean with a whisper of Italian. It's what happens when comfort food gets dressed up for a night out. Think simple ingredients, treated with the kind of reverence usually reserved for royalty. It's the kind of food you'd expect from the South of France if your grandmother and a French chef teamed up in the kitchen. It's elegant without being stuffy and rich without being heavy. Everything feels considered yet effortless. The Burrata with black truffle is the kind of starter that makes you close your eyes on the first bite. Creamy, earthy and too good to share. The showstopper is the beef tartare with smoked bone marrow mayonnaise – a dish so decadent, it should come with a warning label. You could fall in love over that dish. You haven't been to LPM if you haven't had the Burgundy snails with garlic butter and parsley. It's the real hero of the starters, they are a rite of passage. Sides like the dauphinois gratin and broccolini keep things balanced and satisfying. The grilled Wagyu sirloin was rich and indulgent, a dish for when you're feeling celebratory. The Vivienne lamb cutlets were sublime and packed with flavour and finished with just enough finesse to make you fall in love. Perfectly pink, dressed with olive, eggplant caviar and pine nuts, they'll haunt your dreams for a long time. But not everything landed perfectly. The lobster linguine, looked the part but fell short on the flavour. The pasta was tasty, but the lobster itself should have stayed in Canada. It wasn't bad, but it didn't sing. Blame the snails for stealing the spotlight. The homemade rigatoni arrabbiata is a safe, solid choice for the meat-free crowd. Dessert is where the magic returns. The vanilla cheesecake lives up to its reputation as the best in the UAE. Light, creamy, perfectly paired with a berry compote. The hot chocolate mousse is smooth and indulgent, like something written straight from the heart of the kitchen. Both desserts tasted like they were made for the king of France. Drinks are thoughtful and beautifully made. Whether you're going alcohol-free or diving into cocktails, the flavours are clean, bright and refreshing. The Service There's a quiet choreography to the way the staff move. They glide, rather than walk, anticipating what you need before you realise you need it. Waiters know the menu intimately. Their recommendations are honest, thoughtful and spot on. The sommelier, with a palate as sharp as his suit, made pairings that elevated each bite. What's On the Bill Expect to spend around Dhs500 per person. If you're adding Wagyu, caviar or multiple courses, the total climbs fast. But the experience, from food to service, makes it worth it. The Final Say La Petite Maison is an experience that's about more than just exquisite food. You're transported from Abu Dhabi's desert heat to the breezy coastline of the French Riviera. It does this through flavours and feeling. The entire night feels like something to remember. Come hungry, leave smitten. What's On Verdict Sublime service, dreamy desserts and enough French flair to make you forget you're in a mall. Go for the snails, stay for the dessert, and leave planning your next visit. Location: La Petite Maison, The Galleria, Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi Times: Mon to Sun, noon to 3:30pm, 6pm to 11:30pm Contact: (02) 692 9600 Reservations: Highly recommended, especially for dinner and weekends Images: supplied

What chefs eat: This is where UAE chefs dine abroad

Written by: Manaal Fatimah 30th July 2025 We're spoiled for choice with restaurants in UAE. But this travel season, we've tapped some of our culinary greats for their favourite restaurants worldwide, to inspire where you dine on your globetrotting adventures. Check out what these UAE chefs eat around the world. goes to…Dishoom, Shoreditch, London Dishoom in Shoreditch holds a special place in my heart. It's where my husband Shadi and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary, surrounded by the cosy charm of its Bombay-inspired interiors. Think warm lighting, vintage touches, and the comforting chatter of conversation around. There's something incredibly wholesome about the food: the smoky grilled meats, buttery naan straight from the tandoor, the rich, slow- cooked black daal that feels like a hug in a bowl, and the perfectly crisp fried okra that we couldn't stop reaching for. Dishoom isn't just a restaurant; it's an experience – nostalgic, soulful, and warm. @dishoom goes to…Gymkhana, London, UK One place that stands out to me, even though I've only been there once, is Gymkhana, a two Michelin Star Indian restaurant in London that's home to the best butter chicken and the best biryani. It's the kind of cool you can't put your finger on what makes it so special, but it is just so attractive as a venue. Also, my girlfriend is not a fan of tasting menus (which is what you get at most Michelin restaurants), so when I'm in London, I usually visit them alone. But Gymkhana is special because we're able to order a la carte and can enjoy a Michelin experience together. It's one of those restaurants that I want to go back to again and again. @gymkhanalondon goes to…Mercado del Puerto, Montevideo, Uruguay To this day, nothing compares to my experience in Uruguay. I first got to know about this gem through Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations and I was instantly hooked. Back in 2019 I was unbelievably lucky to be part of a course called 7 fires by Francis Mallmann, in Garzon – an old train station converted into a hotel and restaurant. We spent the best part of 3 weeks cooking with live fire right in the middle of the road across from the restaurant and also visiting the most amazing restaurants in idyllic locations, either by the beach or the plains, in the city or the countryside. goes to…Lung King Heen, Hong Kong Lung King Heen offers exquisite seafood and dim sum by Executive Chinese Chef Chan Yan Tak. As the world's first Chinese restaurant to earn three Michelin stars,I had the unforgettable privilege of attending an event in Hong Kong where Chef Chan Yan Tak personally prepared his signature crispy frogs legs with spicy salt for us – it was one of the most memorable dining experiences of my life. I was even invited into the kitchen to cook alongside this legendary chef. The consistency of the personally- sourced ingredients, the depth of flavour, and the elegant oriental atmosphere of the restaurant truly reflect a standard of excellence that continues to inspire me. @fshongkong goes to…Disfrutar, Barcelona, Spain Disfrutar is co-owned by Mateu Casañas, Oriol Castro, and Eduard Xatruch – former colleagues at the legendary elBulli. Since its opening in December 2014, the restaurant has earned 3 Michelin Stars and was recently named the Best Restaurant in the World for 2024. It pushes the boundaries of art, science, and creativity, delivering flawless execution with every dish. What truly set the experience apart was the warm, genuine hospitality, which elevated it beyond other world-class restaurants I've had the pleasure of dining at. @disfrutarbcn goes to…Asador Etxebarri, Bizkaia, Spain Etxebarri is purity at its finest, it's simplicity at it's finest, it's respect and passion towards one's craft, respect for ingredients, respect to suppliers, respect in the simple art of cooking. All the ingredients come from around the restaurant – the cows are on top of the hill, the shrimp comes fresh from a certain local supplier, the milk comes from the cows. When I went, it was my wife and I's honeymoon, and we drove from Madrid – it was a long but worthwhile journey. I had the chef – Bittor Arginzoniz – cookbook and I had it signed, and to see him in the flesh was like seeing Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant, like meeting a culinary god. @asadorextebarrioficial goes to…Concettina ai Tre Santi, Naples, Italy On a long pizza tour of southern Italy, my son Sebastian and I fell deeply in love with Concettina ai Tre Santi deep in the Rione Sanità neighborhood of Naples. It remains the best meal of my life and the perfect blend of tradition and modernity in the food that I love most – pizza. We walked into Concettina as strangers and we walked out as family. It was a powerful expression of hospitality for young Sebastian and for me a lesson in blending youthful irreverence with the weight of history and its rich traditions. There's room for both and a need for them to live in harmony. They do at Concettina just as they do at Marmellata, and for us it served as confirmation that what we had in mind already existed. @concettina3santi Images: Socials/Supplied > Sign up for FREE to get exclusive updates that you are interested in
