Tourists reveal the underrated European country that's so beautiful it blew them away

Daily Mail16 hours ago
Tourists have revealed the surprising hidden gem destinations that unexpectedly blew them away - and one lesser-known European country has emerged as a standout favourite.
A Reddit user recently prompted a discussion in the popular subreddit r/travel, which saw globetrotters share the unlikely countries that have become the highlight of their travels.
They asked: 'Has anyone else stumbled into a destination by accident or as a Plan B, and it ended up being the highlight of your travels? I'm convinced these unplanned discoveries are what make travelling so special.'
The post racking up over 400 responses from seasoned explorers and spontaneous adventurers alike.
While replies came in from all corners of the globe, a clear trend emerged, with Central and Eastern Europe revealed to be home to some of the world's most underrated treasures.
Leading the bunch was Slovenia, a picturesque Central European nation many described as a 'fairytale come to life.'
One Redditor wrote: 'I just got back from a trip to Slovenia, which honestly wasn't even on my radar until a friend suggested it last minute.
'I expected a kind of generic European vibe, but I ended up absolutely loving it. Lake Bled looked like something out of a fairytale, and the people were so welcoming that it almost felt suspicious (in the best way).'
Another chimed: 'Lake Bled is one of the more stunning places we've been in awhile, everyone in Slovenia was incredibly nice, and would highly recommend.'
A third wrote: 'My answer was Slovenia too. It's been more than two weeks since we are back. Cant get those green pasture scenery out of my mind - we were in Kranjska Gora.'
But they warned: 'And against the popular opinion, somehow Lake bled did not feel that heavenly as it looked on social media! I agree it definitely looked good from a higher pov, we hiked a small bit near the castle.'
Poland came in as a close second, with Redditors gushing over its rich history, food and architecture.
One traveller, who ended up in Krakow on a detour before visiting Auschwitz, found themselves swept away by Old Town's charm, describing the area as 'gorgeous.'
Another added: 'All the reasons you go to Europe in one country with an amazing and tragic history. Castles, mountains, great food, history, beaches, not to mention fantastic transport, etc...
'But Poland gets overlooked in favor of Czechia and other blue chip western Europe destinations. I've been three times now and I would live there.'
Romania also drew praise from several Redditors, particularly for destinations located far from the capital.
One person said: 'Bucharest wasn't bad - but compared to Brasov, Sibiu, Cluj, and Sighisoara… meh.'
Georgia, situated at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, captivated adventurers with 'the most mystical, fairy book mountains they've ever seen.'
Bosnia and Herzegovina, often overshadowed by its popular neighbour Croatia, also left a lasting impression.
One traveller shared, 'The mountains of Bosnia stole my heart, as did the eclectic mess of Sarajevo,' while another said, 'Spent a week there and it's easily in my top 3 countries now. More people should visit.'
While Europe dominated the conversation, some travellers looked farther afield for their unexpected gems.
Guatemala, The Azores, and Lebanon received shout-outs for their rich culture, landscapes, and warmth.
One humbled commenter wrote: 'For too long, I ignored Guatemala. Wrote it off for no reason other than I love Mexico so much and viewed Guatemala as "Diet Mexico."
'Feel free to shame me. But then I got a cheap flight on a whim. Being able to see living breathing Mayan cultures is amazing. And the volcanoes... Whew lad.'

View post: Amazon is selling a 'convenient' $40 tire inflator for just $20, and shoppers say it's a 'must-have' in your car View post: Ferrari Just Fixed The Most Annoying Thing About New Cars The electric van tackles the Eurotrip Mercedes-Benz gave curious customers and enthusiasts an update on one of its future vehicles on July 2. New photos show heavily camouflaged versions of the three-pointed star's upcoming all-electric VLE vans on the streets of Rome following a test that saw it traverse over 1,090 kilometers (~677 miles) across Europe from its technical home in Stuttgart. 0:03 / 0:09 VW will introduce a sub-$20,000 EV, but probably not here Watch More The test served as a preview for vehicles that will soon be produced on the automaker's new 'modular and scalable' electric Van Architecture, which will underpin models described as the 'next generation' of 'Grand Limousines and commercial transporters,' adaptable to meet particular customer needs. The vehicle tested on the ultra-long drive was the VLE, a van that is said to be configurable for up to eight seats, including 'flexible vehicles for families and leisure active customers to exclusive VIP shuttles.' The VLE's journey from Stuttgart to Rome was not intended to be a picturesque photoshoot with a van with funky graphics, nor was it some sort of Roman holiday for Mercedes engineers using company property; some serious real-world usability testing was conducted. Previous expeditions included cold-weather testing in Sweden and a northern route from Stuttgart to Norway's North Cape. The road trip was a test of the van's performance under the kind of conditions a theoretical van driver would undertake including a wide range of altitudes, extreme temperature changes from 11°C (52°F) in Germany to 33°C (91°F) in Rome, as well as a diverse variety of roads that included Alpine passes, highways, country roads, and narrow European city streets. On the road, engineers measured the vehicle's drivetrain performance, regenerative braking efficiency, and thermal management as it encountered various conditions. One particular feature that engineers liked was the VLE's rear-axle steering, which was helpful on both winding mountain roads and in the tight, cramped streets of Rome. 'Our future MPVs have once again impressively demonstrated their suitability for everyday use on the long-distance route,' said Dr. Andreas Zygan, Head of Development at Mercedes-Benz Vans. 'With just two short charging stops from Stuttgart to the Alps to Rome, the Mercedes-Benz VLE demonstrates impressive efficiency of the new Van Electric Architecture.' Even with these hurdles, the VLE completed the 13-hour journey while keeping the cabin at a reasonably comfortable temperature and stopping only twice to charge, which took 15 minutes each. Final thoughts Mercedes-Benz plans to launch its vehicles in 2026, which it calls a 'completely new era' for its van lineup. According to Mercedes, there will be a clear distinction between its passenger and utility vans and what it calls Grand Limousines. Last month, Mercedes showed off what such 'Grandness' could look like in the form of the Vision V concept, a luxurious van concept that features a 'Private Lounge' for passengers. I do not fathom any sort of 'personal use' for vans like the VLE or VLS, nor am I a certified member of #vanlife. Still, it is impressive to know that one of the van leaders is ready to tackle the electric era with a vehicle capable of the extreme adventures it might have to tackle in everyday use. I went to the world's biggest Wetherspoons with a rooftop bar overlooking a sandy beach – it rivals Ibiza in the summer

I'M peering out over a golden sandy beach, a palm plant tickling my arms as I enjoy the 32C heat with my beer. If you're guessing I'm somewhere in Ibiza or Majorca, you'd be wrong by just over a thousands miles. 4 Just a short train away from my hometown (or from London, around 75 minutes) is the Royal Victoria Pavilion Wetherspoons. But this isn't any old Spoons - it 's the biggest in the UK, therefore also the world's biggest (seeing as they are yet to branch out to anywhere abroad). The 11,000sqft space can now fit up to 1,500 punters after a £750,000 renovation last year. So there was no better place to spend the afternoon during the scorching weather trailing across the UK. From the outside it looks just as impressive, complete with a silver mermaid on the roof and Grade II listed features. And while it looks huge on the inside, with a central winding staircase taking you to the top mezanine, its the outside space that is the star of the show. The outdoor rooftop terrace wraps around the entire building, with enough tables and chairs to fit hundreds. The best views are found at the very back, with pub backing onto Ramsgate's artificial sandy beach. I managed to secure a prime table in the middle, with views of the huge stretch dotted with sandcastle builders and sea swimmers. An older couple were even a few tables away facing the sun, sleeves and shorts rolled up with their eyes closed as they tried to tan alongside their pints. One of the UK's prettiest Wetherspoons is in an up-and-coming seaside town 4 A commitment, when the beach was just steps away. And despite barely being lunch time, the place definitely was already picking up with it already more than half full of people getting their orders in. Littered with palm plants and metal tables, it certainly felt like I was abroad rather than in a Kent town. Especially when I could just about hear the baseline of some music from someones speakers at the beach... If you prefer doing some boat window shopping, you can grab a table on the right side overlooking the harbour. Or the front side of the roof terrace which overlooks the streets - certainly the lesser of the spots to grab. Don't worry if you can't handle the heat either. Downstairs is a smaller beach terrace that is fully shaded, but still with views of the beach. You'll have to go around to get to the beach however, with no direct access but instead via an entry point next to the Wetherspoons. But if you want that cheap beach club vibe without having to hop on a plane or buy an expensive drink - the Royal Victorian Pavilion is your best bet. Here is everything else you need to do in Ramsgate. And we've rounded up some of the best rooftop bars in London as well.

European city that is the ‘birthplace of Italian chocolate' to get new Ryanair flights

TURIN, which is considered the capital of chocolate, is getting new flights from the UK. Ryanair is gearing up to take Brits to the Italian city later this year where you'll find local chocolate specialities, festivals and ski slopes. 5 5 Ryanair will operate a new route between Liverpool and Turin in Italy in winter 2025. The new flights will operate on Saturdays which start on December 13 and are now bookable until March 28. Prices for return flights start from £21.99. Turin is widely known as the 'chocolate capital of Italy ', it has a rich history and tradition of chocolate making dating back centuries. The city has numerous chocolate shops cafes, and festivals too. Turin celebrates its chocolate history with Cioccolatò. The festival holds various chocolate-related activities, like tastings and demonstrations. One delicacy in the city is called 'bicerin', it's a local drink with espresso, chocolate, and cream. The city also has a well-known restaurant called Porto di Savona that has been serving pasta since 1863. One Travel Writer who visited discovered they serve homemade gnocchi with Gorgonzola cheese which you can get for around £10, or tagliatelle with wild boar ragout for a tad more. Europe's highest hotel that you can only get to by cable car 5 5 Turin isn't just a place to indulge though, it's also good for winter sports too as it's surrounded by the Alps on its western and northern sides. It's a popular ski spot and the best time to hit the slopes in the city is from mid-December to early April, with the peak season being January and February. These months offer the best snow conditions and a good balance between reliable snowfall and the crowds won't be overwhelming either. There's also a lot to see in the city, from the Palazzo Reale, which is the royal palace. The Quadrilatero Romano is the neighborhood for upmarket vintage and fashionable pieces and great for window shopping. There are lots of museums too including Museo Egizio, which is the oldest in the world that is dedicated entirely to ancient Egyptian culture. Other new routes from Ryanair are between London Luton and Wrocław and between Edinburgh and Rzeszów which will start in winter 2025. For now, here are ten affordable summer holiday destinations with cheap Ryanair flights. Plus, The Sun travels to three cheapest Ryanair destinations this month and reveals which was really the best value overall. 5
