April 4 - SandboxAQ, a startup drawing on quantum computing techniques to develop quantitative artificial intelligence models for enterprises, said it has raised $150 million from new investors including Google, Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab and BNP Paribas (BNPP.PA), opens new tab.
The investment has increased SandboxAQ's Series E round to $450 million, valuing the startup at $5.75 billion. With this, SandboxAQ's total funding has reached $950 million, with T. Rowe Price Associates and Breyer Capital among backers.
Participation of Google and Nvidia signals growing interest from technology giants to gain exposure in quantitative model development and place early bets on potential real-world applications.
"We've proven ourselves from the first round in terms of delivering on our promises to a number of customers, and I think strategic investors were attracted to those breakthroughs," SandboxAQ CEO Jack Hidary told Reuters.
SandboxAQ, a spin-off from Google-parent Alphabet (GOOGL.O), opens new tab in 2022, has designed Large Quantitative Models (LQMs) to handle extensive numerical datasets, perform complex calculations and conduct statistical analysis. Its models, available through first-party and third-party platforms such as Google Cloud, can potentially be used to assist drug discovery and develop sophisticated financial models.
The company is based in Palo Alto and employs about 200 people. It plans to use the new funds to accelerate research and development and expand partnerships with enterprises in areas including biopharmaceuticals, chemicals and energy, Hidary said.
Google and Nvidia have been increasing investment in-house and externally in quantum computing, which leverages the principles of quantum mechanics to perform computations beyond the capabilities of traditional computers. Nvidia, known for its chips that powered the generative AI boom, has recently placed emphasis on "physical AI."
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang dialed back skepticism regarding the timeline for practical quantum computing systems. At the chipmaker's "GTC Conference" last month, Huang said advancement in the field is progressing faster than anticipated as Nvidia set up its quantum research lab.
Google's work in quantum computing drew attention in December when the firm announced a new generation of quantum chips, overcoming a major challenge in the field. In February, it participated in a $230 million funding round for QuEra Computing.

UK financial regulator partners with Nvidia in AI 'sandbox'

LONDON, June 9 - Financial firms in Britain will be able to test artificial intelligence tools later this year in a regulatory "sandbox" launched on Monday by the country's financial watchdog, part of a broader government strategy to support innovation and economic growth. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has partnered with U.S. chipmaker Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab to provide access to advanced computing power and bespoke AI software through what it calls a "Supercharged Sandbox." A sandbox refers to a controlled environment where companies can test new ideas such as products, services or technologies. The programme is intended to help firms in the early stages of exploring AI, offering access to technical expertise, better datasets and regulatory support, the FCA said. It is open to all financial services companies experimenting with AI. "This collaboration will help those that want to test AI ideas but who lack the capabilities to do so," Jessica Rusu, the FCA's chief data, information and intelligence officer, said. "We'll help firms harness AI to benefit our markets and consumers, while supporting economic growth." Finance minister Rachel Reeves has urged Britain's regulators to remove barriers to economic growth, describing it as an "absolute top priority" for the government. In April, she said she was pleased with how the FCA and the Prudential Regulation Authority, part of the Bank of England, were responding to her call to cut red tape. Nvidia said the initiative would allow firms to explore AI-powered innovations in a secure environment, using its accelerated computing platform. "AI is fundamentally reshaping the financial sector," said Jochen Papenbrock, EMEA head of financial technology at Nvidia, citing improvements in data analysis, automation and risk management. He added that the sandbox will provide firms with a "secure environment to explore AI innovations using Nvidia's full-stack accelerated computing platform, supporting industry-wide growth and efficiency." The testing is set to begin in October.

UK banks to experiment with Nvidia AI in ‘supercharged sandbox' scheme

The UK's financial regulator is to allow banks and other City firms to experiment with the US chipmaker Nvidia's leading AI products to 'speed up innovation' and fulfil government orders to boost UK growth. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) said it was launching a 'supercharged sandbox' that would give successful applicants the chance to experiment safely with cutting-edge AI under the watchdog's supervision, allowing them to use Nvidia's accelerated computing products. The regulator is not dictating what those experiments might be, but some firms have previously suggested that AI could be used to identify and intercept authorised push payment fraud, in which victims are tricked into sending money to criminals' bank accounts, or help identify stock market manipulation. The FCA's chief data, intelligence and information officer, Jessica Rusu, said: 'This collaboration will help those that want to test AI ideas but who lack the capabilities to do so. We'll help firms harness AI to benefit our markets and consumers, while supporting economic growth.' The AI sandbox programme is open to applications, with plans to begin operating in October, nearly a year after the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, ordered the FCA to encourage more risk-taking across the City to help spur growth and competitiveness. The government has been heaping pressure on UK watchdogs to do more to support the economy, amid accusations that red tape has been a barrier to business and inward investment. The FCA's focus on AI comes despite fears that the technology could lead to job losses across a swathe of sectors, including financial services, unless the government implements proper controls. The move chimes, however, with Keir Starmer's calls in January for a huge rollout of AI, including 'sector champions' that could drive Britain's role in developing and deploying AI. The collaboration with Nvidia will be hailed by enthusiasts of the new technology. The Silicon Valley company, founded in 1993, has been the engine of the AI market boom, with hype around the technology propelling the firm's valuation to more than $3tn (£2.2tn). 'The FCA's supercharged sandbox provides firms with a secure environment to explore AI innovations using Nvidia's full-stack accelerated computing platform, supporting industry-wide growth and efficiency.'

Asian shares rally ahead of US-China trade talks

Shares rose in Asia on Monday ahead of the second round of trade talks between Washington and Beijing, due later in the day in London. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 gained 1.1% to 38,137.09 as the government reported that the Japanese economy contracted by 0.2% in the January-March quarter. In South Korea, the Kospi added 1.9% to 2,865.52. Chinese markets rose even though the government reported that exports slowed in May, growing 4.8% from a year earlier after a jump of more than 8% in April. Exports to the United States fell nearly 10% compared with a year earlier. China also reported that consumer prices fell 0.1% in May from a year earlier, marking the fourth consecutive month of deflation. Hong Kong 's Hang Seng picked up 1.4% to 24,119.64 while the Shanghai Composite Index climbed 0.4% to 3,397.13. Australia's market was closed for a public holiday. On Friday, stocks gained ground on Wall Street following a better-than-expected report on the U.S. job market. The gains were broad, with every sector in the S&P 500 rising. That solidified a second consecutive winning week for the benchmark index, which has rallied back from a slump two months ago to come within striking distance of its record high. The S&P 500 rose 1% to 6,000.36. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1% to 42,762.87 while the Nasdaq gained 1.2%, to 19,529.95. Technology stocks, with their outsized values, led the broad gains. Chipmaker Nvidia jumped 1.2% and iPhone maker Apple rose 1.6%. Tesla rose 3.7%, regaining some of the big losses it suffered on Thursday when Trump and Musk sparred feverishly on social media. Circle Internet Group, the U.S.-based issuer of one of the most popular cryptocurrencies, rose 29.4%. That adds to its 168% gain from Thursday when it debuted on the New York Stock Exchange. U.S. employers slowed their hiring last month, but still added a solid 139,000 jobs amid uncertainty over President Donald Trump's trade war. The closely watched monthly update reaffirmed that the job market remains resilient, despite worries from businesses and consumers about the impact of tariffs on goods going to and coming from the U.S. and its most important trading partners. President Donald Trump's on-again-off-again tariffs continue to weigh on companies. Lululemon Athletica plunged 19.8% after the maker of yoga clothing cut its profit expectations late Thursday as it tries to offset the impact of tariffs while being buffeted by competition from start-up brands. Lululemon joins a wide range of companies, from retailers to airlines, that have warned investors about the potential hit to their revenue and profits because of tariffs raising costs and consumers potentially tightening their spending. Hopes that Trump will lower his tariffs after reaching trade deals with other countries are a main reason the S&P 500 has rallied back so furiously since dropping roughly 20% two months ago from an all-time high. The economy is absorbing the impact from tariffs on a wide range of goods from key trading partners, along with raw materials such as steel. Heavier tariffs could hit businesses and consumers in the coming months. The U.S. economy contracted during the first quarter. Recent surveys by the Institute for Supply Management, a trade group of purchasing managers, found that both American manufacturing and services businesses contracted last month. On Tuesday, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development forecast 1.6% growth for the U.S. economy this year, down from 2.8% last year. The uncertainty over tariffs and their economic impact has put the Federal Reserve in a delicate position. In other trading early Monday, U.S. benchmark crude oil lost 3 cents to $64.55 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, gave up 5 cents to $66.42 per barrel. The U.S. dollar retreated to 144.42 Japanese yen from 144.85 yen. The euro edged higher, to $1.1422 from $1.1399.
