Stephen King's ‘The Institute' Trailer Sees Gifted Kids Subjected To Horrific Experiments In MGM+ Series
UPDATED: MGM+ has dropped the first trailer for The Institute, its upcoming thriller series based on the 2019 Stephen King novel.

In one scene, one of the gifted children who have been abducted and taken to The Institute describes one of the horrific experiments that she is being subjected to. 'It feels like a nail is being hammered into your forehead.'
The eight-episode series comes from director/executive producer Jack Bender (From), writer/executive producer Benjamin Cavell (Justified, The Stand) and MGM+ Studios.

PREVIOUS, June 5: MGM+ has slotted July 13 for the premiere of The Institute, its upcoming thriller series based on the 2019 Stephen King novel. The streamer also released some first-look photos and key art, which you can view above and below.
From director/executive producer Jack Bender (From), writer/executive producer Benjamin Cavell (Justified, The Stand) and MGM+ Studios, the eight-episode series follows the story of teen genius Luke Ellis (Joe Freeman) who is kidnapped and awakens at The Institute, a facility full of children who all got there the same way he did, and who are all possessed of unusual abilities. In a nearby town, haunted former police officer Tim Jamieson (Ben Barnes) has come looking to start a new life, but the peace and quiet won't last, as his story and Luke's are destined to collide.
The Institute also stars Mary-Louise Parker (Ms. Sigsby), Simone Miller (Kalisha), Fionn Laird (Nick), Hannah Galway (Wendy), Julian Richings (Stackhouse), Robert Joy (Dr. Hendricks) and Martin Roach (Chief Ashworth).
King executive executive produces alongside Bender, who directs, Cavell, who penned the teleplay, Gary Barber, Sam Sheridan and Ed Redlich. Series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios.

Spaceballs 2 officially has a release date window, with Amazon MGM Studios announcing that Rick Moranis, Mel Brooks, and more will return for the sequel to the cult classic comedy movie. According to a new report from Variety, Amazon MGM Studios has scheduled Spaceballs 2 for a theatrical release sometime in 2027. Alongside that news, the company also announced that Mel Brooks — who wrote, directed, and starred in the 1987 original film — would be returning for the film, as would Rick Moranis and Bill Pullman, who played Dark Helmet and Lone Starr in the original, respectively. The returning trio wasn't the only casting news, though. Deadline also reported that Keke Palmer was joining the cast of the Josh Gad-led sequel. It's currently unclear who Palmer will be playing, and also unclear what the plot for the sequel will be. In a video on social media confirming the film's release date window, Brooks joked about just how many franchises have come out in the 38 years since Spaceballs. According to reports last year, Spaceballs 2 is set to be directed by Josh Greenbaum with a screenplay from Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. A parody of Star Wars, Spaceballs starred Pullman as Lone Starr, John Candy as Barf, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, Joan Rivers as the voice of Dot Matrix, and Moranis as Lord Dark Helmet. Brooks also played President Skroob and Yogurt in the film. 'In a distant galaxy, planet Spaceball has depleted its air supply, leaving its citizens reliant on a product called Perri-Air,' the synopsis for Spaceballs reads. 'In desperation, Spaceball's leader President Skroob (Mel Brooks) orders the evil Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) to kidnap Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) of oxygen-rich Druidia and hold her hostage in exchange for air. But help arrives for the Princess in the form of renegade space pilot Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his half-man, half-dog partner, Barf (John Candy).' Amazon MGM Studios announced that Brooks, 98, will reprise his role as the Yoda-like Yogurt in a new "Spaceballs" movie. The sequel to the 1987 cult classic "Star Wars" parody will be released in theaters in 2027, according to a June 12 release. Josh Greenbaum will direct the film from a script by a top team that includes "Frozen" star Josh Gad (also a producer), Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Plot details and more casting news are being kept under wraps. According to the release, the film has been described (by those who have not yet read the script) as "A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film." Confused? The ONLY important thing is that "Spaceballs" is back and Brooks will play Yogurt, the keeper of the power known as The Schwartz (which is definitely not The Force). Yogurt predicted this reunion on-screen 38 years ago in the comedy that critics panned, but which lives on like a joke-telling Force Ghost. "God willing, we'll all meet again in 'Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money,'" Yogurt said at the time. It was foretold! In a video with the announcement, Brooks, looking spry in a "Spaceballs" sweatshirt, said, "After 40 years, we asked, 'What do the fans want?' But instead we're making this movie." He ended the video with a universe-resonating, "May the Schwartz be with you!" Comedy Renaissance man Brooks directed, wrote and played two roles in the original "Spaceballs" — Yogurt and President Skroob. Rick Moranis starred as the Darth Vader-wannabe Dark Helmet, Bill Pullman was the Han Solo-esque Lone Starr, and Daphne Zuniga was the Princess Vespa. "Spaceballs" also featured the legendary late John Candy as Barf: a half-man, half-dog sidekick. Will Barf return somehow? We can only wait and see. Deadline followed the Amazon newsblast by reporting that Pullman and Moranis would both return for the sequel. Is the 'Spaceballs' sequel a good idea? When will it blast off? Clearly, Amazon MGM has high hopes, setting the movie up for a 2027 release. It will be a much-awaited appearance of a comedic giant as Brooks has talked for years about a new "Spaceballs." We'll just call it before filming even starts: What this crazy world needs now is Mel Brooks and "Spaceballs 2."

The Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) are taking a definitive stance: The Golden Reel Awards will honor only human artistic achievement. In a world where Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) is rapidly infiltrating creative industries, the MPSE is taking proactive steps to preserve the integrity and humanity of sound editorial, design, and foley artistry. In a press release issued Thursday, MPSE president David Barber stated, "It is an enormous question to ask: how much of our humanity are we willing to give away to technology, especially in the arts? The time to ponder that question, set up boundaries, and guide how A.I. is assimilated into our workflow and lives was yesterday. The dam of A.I. has broken, and the waters are upon us. Choosing what we embrace as award-worthy filmmaking is a way of diverting those waters while we grapple with this exponential change. As A.I. technology infiltrates and permeates our industry, rules and accepted practices for its use need to emerge that keep artists at the forefront." What we choose to promote as award-worthy points to how much we value the human endeavor of artistic creation. Because of these concerns and our organization's mission to uphold and celebrate the creative human endeavor of sound and music editorial, sound design, and Foley artistry, the MPSE will not be accepting projects for awards consideration where Generative A.I. is used to create elements for the final soundtrack. Golden Reel Award qualification rules are being updated and will be published on our website soon. As the industry evolves to adopt tools and techniques, current or yet to be developed, our board of directors and A.I. committee are poised to evolve our stance on this issue, ensuring we adhere to our mission. We remain open to what the technological future may bring in support of the humans working in the craft of sound editorial.
