On the eve of his massive SummerSlam main event, Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena has revealed the deeply personal reason for his 2025 retirement. In a candid interview, the 17-time world champion explained that his priorities have completely shifted from his career to his family.
Speaking with Stephanie McMahon, Cena shared that while he is still in great physical shape, he is no longer willing to pay the personal price that a full-time WWE schedule demands.
A New Set of Priorities
Cena was direct about the impact his old schedule would have on his life today. He stated that his relationship with his wife, Shay Shariatzadeh, is now his top priority.
"A schedule like I was doing in 2013 would destroy me right now," Cena admitted. "It will ruin me and ruin my relationship, and that's the tip of my spear. So I gotta close a chapter, that's it."
He continued, "The greatest gift is waking up. And that is the tip of my spear. And right below that is my bride."

The Ultimate Company Man
For nearly two decades, John Cena was the definition of a workhorse. As the face of WWE, he maintained a grueling, 300+ days-a-year schedule of wrestling, travel, and media appearances. He also holds the all-time record for the most wishes granted for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a testament to his incredible dedication.
Cena reflected on the sacrifices that came with that role. He shared a story from 2008 when he was at dinner with his ex-wife and received a call from WWE. "'We need you here, boss. There's a plane waiting for you.' See you... I literally threw some cash at my ex-wife and caught a plane to the next event," he recalled.
A Champion's Final Stand?
While Cena says he doesn't regret his past dedication, his new perspective adds a fascinating layer of drama to his upcoming SummerSlam main event. Since turning heel earlier this year, Cena has been a vicious and manipulative champion. This candid, heartfelt interview provides a stark contrast to his on-screen character.
As he prepares to defend his Undisputed WWE Championship against "The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes in a brutal Street Fight tomorrow night, one has to wonder about his mindset. Is this newfound peace and perspective a weakness that a hungry challenger can exploit, or does it make the 17-time champion more dangerous and focused than ever?

Paul Heyman reveals how Seth Rollins, Brock Lesnar stunners came together for WWE SummerSlam

Seth Rollins' infamous knee injury was a storyline all along, Paul Heyman confirmed Wednesday to Uncrowned. During an in-studio appearance on "The Ariel Helwani Show,' the WWE Hall of Famer and current on-screen manager of Rollins lifted the lid on the much-discussed angle, which led to one of the major twists at this past weekend's WWE SummerSlam event. The WWE audience had originally been led to believe Rollins suffered a legitimate knee injury during his match with LA Knight back at Saturday Night's Main Event on July 12 — a development that led to Knight picking up a seemingly unexpected victory. However, Heyman said Wednesday that Rollins was never hurt at all. He noted that the entire thing had been set up for storyline purposes — part of what he referred to as a 'power grab' executed by Rollins in order to get his hands on the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. 'We had a situation where every time Seth Rollins was getting himself in a position where he could go for the championship, CM Punk kept interfering,' said Heyman, providing the in-character justification for the angle. 'At that point, he needs a Plan B to get the title. 'So Plan B was to get the Money in the Bank briefcase and get out of the way. Out of sight, out of mind. That way, Punk never sees it coming. And it just so happened that CM Punk ended up in the title match at SummerSlam, which was a happy coincidence on our part.' Heyman also discussed the shock return of Brock Lesnar, who returned to WWE programming this past Sunday — following a two-year absence — to launch an attack on John Cena at the end of SummerSlam. When asked how long the comeback had been in the works for, Heyman said he found out about it two weeks before the event — though conceded that he only heard about the return after the terms had been agreed between Lesnar and the WWE. 'I was tagged in to it after the deal was done,' he said. Asked about some of the criticism around Lesnar's return — particularly from those who point out that Lesnar is named in the ongoing sex trafficking lawsuit filed against Vince McMahon by former WWE employee Janel Grant — Heyman defended the WWE's decision to bring back its former Universal Champion. 'If you were in MetLife Stadium on Sunday, you would understand how much that return meant to our audience," Heyman said. "They were shocked to see Brock Lesnar come out and see him F-5 John Cena. No one was saying, 'Oh God, they brought back Brock.' People were going nuts to see him. That's our paying audience and they're happy to see him. 'Very few people ever make it to the top in life without either making mistakes or having skeletons in their closet. Obviously, the decision was made that it's time to bring back Brock Lesnar. If there are critics of it, they should get over it. He's here and he's going to be here, and they ain't going to be able to cancel him.' Heyman argued that Lesnar, a former heavyweight UFC champion, became even more important following the WWE's merger — in September 2023 — with the UFC as part of the TKO group. 'Who do you have who has walked that path in both WWE and UFC at such a high level? There's only two people that's ever been a champion in UFC and in WWE and meant something, and that's Brock Lesnar and Ronda Rousey," Heyman said. "Now I love Ronda to death, but Brock did it longer than Ronda over multiple decades, and look at what he's meant to WWE too.' As someone with input into creative decisions within WWE, Heyman also defended the controversial John Cena heel turn, which came to an end at this past weekend's SummerSlam. The storyline had attracted some criticism for being unconvincing and for the disappearance of The Rock, who had previously been a pivotal figure in the storyline. 'I thought [Cena] delivered," Heyman said. "I thought he took it as far as he could possibly take it. He even took it places I didn't think he was going to. And he put his heart and soul and his passion into it.' As for the absence of The Rock, Heyman replied that, 'I don't know what happened with Dwayne. That's something you should have him come and answer for himself.'

John Cena Talks SUPERMAN's Impact on PEACEMAKER Season 2 and His Loyalty to James Gunn — GeekTyrant

With James Gunn's Superman soaring high in both critical and box office circles, eyes are now on what that success means for the second season of Peacemaker . According to series star John Cena, the positive momentum is a good sign for the future of the DCU—and for the man behind the vision. When asked about his surprise Superman cameo, Cena didn't hesitate to credit Gunn for the easy decision to jump in. "The cameo came about because he asked me, and he could ask me to go to the ends of the Earth and if I could do it, then I'll do it. He's one of the people on a short list, which I admire and respect and really do as much as I can for them. He's changed my life completely, as I stand here in [the Peacemaker costume]." It's that deep respect for Gunn that makes Cena especially excited to see the audience rally behind Superman as the new DC Universe's foundation. "I think to have audiences around the world, embrace James' vision of Superman, which is James' vision for the DCU, is exciting for all of us. It shows that people are interested and they know that Superman is more than just a standalone movie. It's an installment in something larger and I think everyone is eager to see the next chapter." That next chapter is Peacemaker Season 2, which will keep its gritty, unfiltered tone but go even deeper into the DCU web Gunn is weaving. The new season finds Peacemaker facing a version of life he's always dreamed of, only to be forced into a reckoning with his past and an uncertain future. James Gunn returns to write all eight episodes and directs three, including the season opener. Cena is back in full gear, joined once again by Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, and Steve Agee, as the crew steps into a bigger narrative than ever before. This time, the story stretches far beyond Team Peacemaker. Frank Grillo enters the scene as Rick Flag Sr., connecting threads between Superman , Creature Commandos , and what lies ahead for the DCU. Fans can also look forward to crossover appearances from Superman characters like Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Sean Gunn as the shady Maxwell Lord. On top of all that, Peacemaker Season 2 will introduce a new face with Red St. Wild, played by Michael Rooker, another staple of Gunn's cinematic world. With Superman clearing the runway and Peacemaker set to take off again, it's looking like a wild, fun, and connected ride ahead for DC fans.

WWE Consumer Pricing In 2026 Is Way Less Expensive Than You Think

WWE announced a five-year deal to air on ESPN DTC. But as WWE's already plum bank account continues to grow, some fans are worried about their own finances when it comes to viewing WWE content in 2026. Of course, WWE and ESPN's joint announcement was accompanied by social media uproar as many fans misinterpreted the cost of WWE PLEs once the promotion moves to ESPN DTC. How Much Will WWE Content Cost On ESPN DTC? 'In addition to ESPN DTC subscribers, fans that access ESPN through a traditional pay TV provider, e.g. Comcast, DirectTV, Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV, will also have access to the new features through the enhanced ESPN App,' read an ESPN DTC fact sheet. The Total Cost of Watching WWE In 2026 Since the launch of WWE Network in 2014, WWE fans have become accustomed to paying $9.99 for PLEs. When WWE signed with Peacock, that price reduced to $4.99 per month before increasing to $7.99. The idea of having to pay an extra $29.99—a price point that will not apply to many viewers of ESPN DTC—sent some fans into a frenzy. In reality, the total monthly price of watching WWE programming is less than a WWE pay-per-view prior to April of 2014. It is also less than watching an AEW pay-per-view, which is typically priced at $49.99 or $7 per hour.
