India's own Robin Hood: The outlaw who looted millions but won the hearts of millions

Time of India30-04-2025
Today, where most of the crime stories are often linked to greed and self-gain, once in a while, a story comes up that blurs the line between right and wrong. There have been instances of the scamsters funding orphanages and robbers offering alms at temples. Stories like these leave the public and law enforcement confused about whether such people should be condemned at once, or do their acts of charity deserve a footnote in their record of wrongs?
Can good deeds lead to wrongdoings? Is morality a matter of intent or action? These grey areas make good stories, especially when the main character is as attention-seeking as their crimes. A similar story has come up about a thief who is spiritually bent, but with a criminal record a mile long,
Meet Shivprasad, the devout thief
Shivprasad is not your typical career criminal who has been arrested recently by Ashok Nagar police in Kalaburagi of Karnataka. Though wanted in over 260 theft cases across the region, what sets him apart is not just his skill in housebreaking, but what he did with the stolen wealth. Setting himself apart from the regular thieves, he instead funded temple feasts, sponsored food for patients in hospitals, and donated lakhs to religious institutions, believing these acts would cleanse his sins.
Kalaburagi Police
Commissioner explained the unusual case: "This thief would target large homes, steal, and then try to redeem himself by donating to the poor, patients in hospitals, and sponsoring food worth lakhs in temples. He believed these acts would cleanse his sins."

Shivprasad is full of tactics
Shivprasad's tactics were just as calculated as his charity. Before each heist, he would coat his fingertips with super glue like Fevikwik or Fevicol to avoid leaving fingerprints at crime scenes that helped him evade arrest for years. From stealing gold, silver, and wads of cash, his loot ran into the lakhs. But instead of spending it on a lavish lifestyle, he redirected much of it to what he believed were sacred purposes.
Among the evidence recovered was 412 grams of gold worth around ₹30 lakh, a significant portion of which had already been donated to temples. In one instance, he reportedly gave ₹5 lakh to a prominent temple in Maharashtra. In another, he organized a mahaprasad or a grand community meal in Latur district that fed thousands, none of whom suspected their meal was courtesy of a master thief.
Despite his criminal background, Shivprasad's exceptional tactics have led him to be compared to legendary figures. 'The Robin Hood of the Deccan?' some have asked, noting the parallels between his actions and the folklore hero who robbed the rich to give to the poor except this version comes with bhajans, prasads, and temple bells.
While the police aren't swayed by his intentions, the case has certainly made his deeds interesting.

Elderly woman killed in elephant attack in Malappuram

Kozhikode: A 64-year-old woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Kizhakke Chathalloor near Edavanna in Malappuram on Thursday morning, triggering strong protests among locals. The victim was identified as Kalyani, wife of late Chandran of East Chathalloor. The incident happened around 11am when forest department officials were attempting to drive the elephant away. North Wayanad divisional forest officer P Dhanesh Kumar said that the elephant charged at the forest staff during the operation and they had to fire rubber bullet in self defence following which the elephant ran down the hilly terrain. The forest department staff along with RRT had undertaken the task of driving away the elephant on Thursday morning after people's representatives complained at a meeting convened by Ernad MLA P K Basheer that an elephant had strayed into human habitations and was destroying crops. The attack occurred on an erstwhile forest land which had been transferred to the revenue department for assignment under the Kodumpuzha forest station limits under Edavanna forest range. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Benefits of Trading Bitcoin CFDs IC Markets Learn More Undo According to Kizhakke Chathalloor ward member Hamna, the forest department did not alert the public before they fired rubber bullets to scare away the elephant. She said that Kalyani had stepped out to check if children from her household had gone to a nearby stream when she was caught in the elephant's path. The animal struck her down with its trunk and trampled her. Though Kalyani was rushed by locals and forest department officials to a private hospital at Edavanna, she could not be saved. The postmortem was conducted at the Manjeri medical college and the body was handed over to relatives. Hamna said that the elephant had been straying into human habitations and destroying crops for the last 15 days. Ernad MLA P K Basheer urged forest minister A K Saseendran to provide immediate financial aid to the family of the deceased and to relocate the elephant from the area. Locals protested against the forest department officials when they came to the house of the deceased. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). CISF to recruit 70,000 jawans over 5 years

Kolkata: The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will recruit 70,000 jawans over the next five years to take the sanctioned strength to 2,20,000. The force inducted 13,230 personnel in 2024 and aims to recruit an additional 24,098 in 2025. There is a special emphasis on attracting more women candidates to promote gender diversity within the force. "As India continues to experience rapid economic growth, the demand for robust security across various critical sectors has become paramount. CISF, known for its specialised security services, will see expanded deployment in key areas such as the aviation and port sectors, thermal and nuclear power plants, and vital installations including hydropower plants. This expansion is particularly timely as new industrial hubs are anticipated to emerge in regions previously affected by left-wing extremism, such as Chhattisgarh, necessitating a fortified security presence," said an officer. Mansion of ‘Machhli family' near Hathaikheda dam razed amid heavy security

Bhopal: In a demolition operation that lasted nearly six hours, joint teams of district administration, police and municipal corporation on Thursday demolished the mansion of the "Machhli family" in Anantapura, Kokta Hathaikheda. The alleged illegal property, built over 15,000 square feet of govt land, was razed with the help of six earth mover machines amid heavy police deployment. Two members of the Machhli family including Shahwar Ahmed and Yasin Ahmed were arrested by the crime branch of Bhopal police for allegedly running an MD drugs supply racket in the city. They were also booked on charges of rape, molestation, extortion and assault. According to official sources, the mansion was built in 1990 and the three-storey mansion had more than 30 rooms, large halls, marble flooring on the terrace, a park, garage, playroom for children and luxury amenities spread over an acre of land. The market value of the razed property has been estimated at Rs 20 to 25 crore. The demolition had originally been scheduled for July 31 but was stalled following the Supreme Court guidelines, which required prior notice to be served to the owner of a house before the demolition of residential properties. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Here's what a microbiologist says CNA Read More Undo On Thursday around 11 am, when the demolition team arrived with heavy police force, local women attempted to resist and even misbehaved with the officers. However, after the deployment of additional women police personnel to control the protestors, the protest subsided and the illegal mansion was brought down by 5 pm. According to district administration officials, the Machhli family had illegally occupied nearly 70 acres of govt land near Anantpura and constructed three farmhouses, a warehouse, a factory, a madarsa and shops. In a previous demolition drive carried out on July 30, several of these structures were demolished. With Thursday's action, all seven illegal constructions have now been razed, freeing govt land valued at nearly Rs 100 crore. On July 31, the family's lawyer had managed to halt the demolition, citing Supreme Court guidelines requiring 15 days notice before demolishing residential structures. This time, however, despite fresh objections from the defence lawyer, officials went ahead with the operation, asserting that due notices had already been served. "The accused had encroached upon govt land and constructed large illegal buildings. Notices were duly served earlier. Thursday's action has ensured the recovery of govt property worth crores and restored it to official possession," said an officer of the district administration present at the site.
