Filipina athlete wins bronze at Spartan Ultra World Championships in France

Filipino Times10-07-2025
Filipina endurance star Sandi Menchi Abahan delivered a podium-worthy performance at one of the world's most grueling races—the Spartan Ultra World Championship held in Morzine, France—clinching the bronze medal in the women's Elite Open division.
During the competition, athletes must conquer a 50-kilometer mountain trail laden with over 60 obstacles, including high-altitude lake crossings, steep alpine climbs, and icy white-water swims.
For Abahan, the challenge was an opportunity to prove once again why she remains one of Southeast Asia's premier obstacle course racers.
A native of Baguio City and the 2019 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, she clocked 8 hours, 44 minutes, and 22 seconds to finish third behind hometown bet Leslie Lejeune of France (8:02:15) and Britain's Andrea Berquez (8:19:45).
In the men's division, fellow Filipinos Jobert Carolino and Andrico Mahilum also took on the Spartan Ultra, finishing 24th and 33rd, respectively. The podium was swept by Europe's strongest: Italy's Luca Pescollderugg (6:25:18), Canada's Ryan Atkins (6:29:03), and Switzerland's Antoine Freymond (6:35:48).
The Philippine delegation to the championship was supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, which continues to back the country's rising OCR talent pool. Also part of the team were athlete Ailene Sabal and coaches Thumbie Remigio and Mohammad Sherwin Managil.
Obstacle course racing has become one of the Philippines' strongest suits in international competition. The country dominated the 2023 Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia, sweeping all four gold medals at stake—thanks to standout performances from Mark Julius Rodelas, Precious Cabuya, and the men's and women's relay teams.
Abahan's latest feat adds another milestone to the Philippines' growing reputation in the world OCR stage, proving that grit, discipline, and high-altitude heart can take Filipino athletes to the summit of global endurance sport. (Alona Cochon)

Iraq coach lauds Gilas Pilipinas after FIBA Asia Cup loss

Despite bowing to Gilas Pilipinas, Iraq head coach Veselin Matic had nothing but praise for the Philippine squad competing in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. The Philippines scored a 66–57 win over Iraq in the group stage on Saturday, securing a spot in the qualification to the quarterfinals. Iraq, which started strong with an 18–12 lead in the first quarter, eventually faltered as Gilas pulled away in the third period, sealing the win and eliminating the Iraqi team from contention. Matic attributed the result to the Philippines' experience. 'I know for a long time, this team of the Philippines… all these players, they are superstars over there. And that is when the championship [experience is] coming, they are coming with a superstar. I'm sure that the Philippines is improving [by] playing hard games, that will help them in the future,' Matic said. 'For me, the Philippines is [a] top four or top six team here,' he added. Looking ahead, Matic said he hopes Iraq can improve by competing in more international tournaments, such as the Jones Cup. Iraq is currently ranked 92nd in the world by FIBA.

PBBM Forms Task Force for 2025 FIFA Futsal Women's World Cup Hosting

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has formally created an Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) to oversee the country's preparations for the historic hosting of the FIFA Futsal Women's World Cup (FFWWC) 2025. This marks the first time the Philippines will host the prestigious international futsal event. Under Administrative Order (AO) No. 35 signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, the IATF will serve as the central coordinating body for all planning, logistics, and implementation efforts across government and private stakeholders. The tournament is scheduled from November 21 to December 7, 2025, with matches to be held in Pasig City and Victorias City, Negros Occidental. The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will chair the task force, while the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) will act as vice-chair. Other members include key departments such as Tourism, Foreign Affairs, Public Works, ICT, Finance, Health, and Transportation, as well as agencies like the PNP, MMDA, and Bureau of Immigration. The AO emphasizes the national significance of hosting the FFWWC, citing its potential to boost futsal development, inspire youth engagement in sports, elevate the Philippines' international sporting profile, and promote tourism and local economic activity. The IATF is empowered to coordinate plans, receive donations, and implement the necessary procurement and support services. The directive takes effect immediately.

DMW, OWWA, DFA Strengthen Coordination in Dubai to Better Serve OFWs

Top officials from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) gathered in Dubai to reinforce their joint commitment to the One-Country Team Approach, a strategy designed to streamline government services for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). The delegation, led by DMW Undersecretaries Jainal Rasul and Dominique Rubia-Tutay, Assistant Secretary Venecio Legaspi, and OWWA Administrator Patricia Yvonne Caunan, met with Consul General Marford Angeles on August 2, 2025, at the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai. Discussions focused on enhancing digital services, increasing support for the Migrant Workers Office, and expanding welfare initiatives in both the UAE and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. One of the key programs to be rolled out is the expansion of the 'Bagong Bayani ng Mundo – OFW Serbisyo Caravan,' which aims to deliver frontline government services directly to OFWs in various UAE locations. This aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s mandate to bring services closer to Filipino communities abroad. The initiative also highlights holistic community involvement. Plans include OFW sports competitions like basketball and volleyball, E-sports tournaments, cultural events, and the revival of Friendship Day—first launched by former OWWA head Marianito Roque. These programs aim to boost morale and celebrate the resilience of Filipinos working overseas.
