FC Goa won because of its players, not the referee: Manolo Marquez after sealing ACL 2 spot

The Hindu2 days ago
FC Goa head coach Manolo Marquez hit back at Al Seeb coach Valeriu Tița for claiming that the Indian Super League side won the AFC Champions League Two preliminary round match because of the referee.
Goa, playing its first competitive match of the season, rode on goals by Dejan Drazic (24') and Javier Siverio (52') to beat the Omani club 2-1 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa on Wednesday.
'We suffered too much, but finally, we showed some heart— not just the quality, but something more.'Manolo Marquez after FC Goa's win
The match saw a controversial penalty decision — later reversed — in the 43rd minute, when Drazic blocked Ahmed Al-Khamisi's cross, and Al Seeb thought it was a spot-kick from a handball inside the box.
The referee, Zhang Lei from China, initially pointed to the spot, but after consulting with the linesmen, changed his decision to a free kick just outside the 12-yard area.
'We saw the incident on the screen and all of us agreed that it was a penalty. If he had given it, maybe the result would have been different. Plus, there were two offside calls where our last defender and their forward were two metres apart, but he didn't flag it,' Tita told reporters after the match.
'Yesterday, I said the fans would be Goa's 12th man, but I was wrong—it was the referee.'
Marquez refuted the claims, saying he understood the coach's frustration after a loss, but insisted his team won purely on merit

'From where I was, it was impossible to tell if it was a handball. Maybe, if I were on the other bench, I might have seen the hand, and I don't know if it's inside or outside the box,' Marquez said.
'I don't think that we qualified because of the referee. We qualified because maybe we were stronger, and maybe they are angry because they lost against a team that they thought they would beat.'

'I think this team from Oman deserves a lot of respect. We suffered too much, but finally, we showed some heart— not just the quality, but something more,' Marquez added.
'I want to say that it's very difficult to play one match like this because but with the games we had in pre-season, we came into a game like this, and it was very difficult to play 90 minutes with such strong pressure. So, congratulations (to the team).'

Al Nassr's Cristiano Ronaldo (AP Photo, file) Cristiano Ronaldo is set to visit India later this year, as Al-Nassr will take on FC Goa in what is being billed as one of the most significant fixtures in Indian club football history. The Saudi Arabian side has been drawn in Group D of the Asian Champions League Two alongside FC Goa, Tajikistan's Istiklol, and Iraq's Al-Zawraa. The top two from each group will progress to the next round when the competition kicks off in September. 'This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime moment for FC Goa,' club CEO Ravi Puskur told The Associated Press. 'Hosting Al-Nassr and Cristiano Ronaldo is arguably the biggest game in our history.' The team, which also features Sadio Mane and newly signed Joao Felix from Chelsea, is expected to arrive at full strength. Puskur believes the match has the potential to be a landmark for Indian football, offering a platform to showcase the country's ability to compete on the continental stage. 'This is historic for Indian football. We are here on merit, and matches like this help us become part of the sport's biggest narratives,' he said. Poll Do you believe hosting Al-Nassr will boost FC Goa's popularity? Yes, definitely Maybe No, it won't The timing is significant, as domestic football in India faces uncertainty. The 2025-26 ISL season has been suspended amid a dispute over the league's organising agreement, with several clubs halting salaries or operations. Puskur stressed that beyond the financial benefits, the fixture could drive long-term growth. 'It's an opportunity to attract global attention, generate sponsorship interest, and reignite fan engagement — all of which are vital for the future of the sport here,' he added. India waits with bated breath as Goa set to play Ronaldo's Al-Nassr in ACL2

Panaji: FC Goa have been drawn in the same group as Cristiano Ronaldo-captained Al-Nassr FC in the AFC Champions League Two, pitting the lowest-ranked side against one with the biggest profile in Asian football's second-tier club competition. Goa qualified for the group stage of ACL2 after a hard-fought win against Oman Professional League champions Al Seeb 2-1 at Fatorda early this week. The victory took the hosts to the main draw — 16 teams each in West and East zones — and they were delighted to have been grouped with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, besides Al Zawraa SC (Iraq) and FC Istiklol (Tajikistan). 'To be on the same field as Ronaldo, my hero, will be a dream,' said winger Brison Fernandes, the club's highest domestic goal-scorer last season. Goa will face Al-Nassr at Fatorda on Oct 22, while the away clash against the Saudi giants has been scheduled for Nov 5 in Riyadh. The Manolo Marquez-coached side will host Iraq Stars League runnersup Al Zawraa SC in the opening group game on Sep 17. The competition also includes Indian Super League (ISL) champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant, who were placed in group C, alongside Sepahan SC (Iran), Al Hussein (Jordan) and Ahal FC (Turkmenistan). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like He is our only child, we cannot see him suffer. The Saudi Pro League giants have done even better this season, with marquee summer signings like Joao Felix (Chelsea/AC Milan) and Spanish defender Inigo Martínez from Barcelona FC, while Kingsley Coman (Bayern Munich) is expected to follow. Whether Ronaldo shows up with Al-Nassr in India remains to be seen. In last season's AFC Champions League Elite, Ronaldo played just one of the club's five away games. He missed the group-stage clashes against Al-Shorta FC, Iraq (unwell), Esteghlal FC, Iran (muscle fatigue), and Al Sadd SC, Qatar (already qualified) with the club giving varied reasons for his absence. In the pre-quarterfinal clash, the Portugal star did not travel for the away encounter against Esteghlal in Iran. The quarterfinal and semifinal was played at home in Riyadh and Jeddah. Reports in Saudi Arabia have suggested Ronaldo's security team advised him against travelling to some countries for the club's away matches. Fans in India though will hope that Ronaldo boards the chartered flight that will bring the Al-Nassr players to Goa. 'To go from defeating Al Seeb to now being drawn against Al-Nassr that boasts a galaxy of stars like Cristiano, Sadio Mane, Joao Felix, Inigo Martinez, it's a moment that defines everything we have worked for at FC Goa,' said CEO Ravi Puskur. 'For over a decade, we have dreamt of Goan football standing tall on the biggest stages, and today, that dream is real. This isn't just about the club; it's about every player, every staff member, and every fan who has believed in us. ' Until last week, Goa were unsure of its future, given that there is no clarity on when this season's ISL, India's top-tier football league, will kick off. Six clubs are yet to start pre-season training; three have told their players and officials that their salaries are being kept on hold. We are ready to put Goan and Indian football on the global map, and we can't wait for football lovers in India to collectively join us on this historic journey,' said Puskur. The six group stage games are scheduled to be played between Sep 15 and Dec 24, before moving into the Round of 16 from Feb 10-19 next year.
