New bill would help property owners in Illinois evict squatters
(NewsNation) — A bill in Illinois awaiting the governor's signature would give property owners more assistance when evicting squatters from their properties.
Senate Bill 1563, if signed into law, would let the police remove squatters from someone's property on the spot as long as the rightful owner can prove the property is theirs. The law previously allowed squatters to stay on the property and let homeowners take up the issue in eviction court.
Democratic state Rep. La Shawn Ford, a co-sponsor of the bill, said the current law is bad for everyone involved.
Kavanaugh signals Supreme Court will soon decide constitutionality of banning AR-15s
'It's dangerous for landlords, it's dangerous for the squatters because Illinois is a concealed carry state, and people are using their weapons to get people out of their properties,' Ford said.
Ford said the new law would classify squatters as trespassers, allowing the police to arrest them and bypass the eviction process typically associated with squatters' rights. He added the people who are living in properties illegally are 'crooks who know how to game the system.'
'It's critical because we have people that have spent thousands of dollars in eviction court paying lawyers to get a trespasser out,' Ford said. 'We've had people in Illinois give $10,000 to a trespasser just to move them out of the property, only to find the damage they left behind was going to cost even more money.'

Alkami Releases 2025 Update to the Retail Digital Sales & Service Maturity Model
New findings reveal significant differences between the most advanced cohorts PLANO, Texas, June 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Alkami Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: ALKT) ("Alkami"), a leading cloud-based digital banking solutions provider for financial institutions in the U.S., announced the release of the 2025 Update to the Retail Digital Sales & Service Maturity Model in collaboration with financial services influencer Jim Marous and Emerald Research Group. The report - based on proprietary research surveying over 200 U.S. financial institutions with a minimum asset size of $200M - offers a fresh benchmark for digital maturity in banking, with emerging performance distinctions in security and fraud, the employee experience, and data and artificial intelligence (AI). "Digital maturity is quickly becoming the single most important driver of growth and efficiency in banking," said Jim Marous, owner and chief executive officer of the Digital Banking Report. "The widening gap between the leaders and their less mature peers is foundational to how these institutions are strategically aligning culture, strategy, and technology to meet rising expectations across every channel." The research segments financial institutions into four maturity stages, measuring comprehensive benchmarks across readiness and implementation of digital strategies. These cohorts remain the same as originally released in 2024, as do key findings showing the most digitally mature institutions reporting significantly higher revenue growth and institutional size alone not determining an institution's maturity. Findings include: One-third of the most mature institutions have less than $500M in assets, while 13% of the least mature have more than $5B in assets. Digital maturity continues to be highly correlated to growth, with the most advanced institutions reporting up to 5x higher annual average revenue growth than their less mature peers. AI is creating a widening performance gap with 42% of the most digitally mature institutions actively using generative AI at some level across their organization, compared to 26% of the least mature. The most mature institutions have advanced data architectures that support effective AI implementation, where 67% can automatically push targeted marketing to their account holders. Fraud mitigation practices and cybersecurity defense measures vary widely between the two most digitally mature segments, Digital-Forward and Data-First, with the former emerging as leaders in fraud prevention and the latter distinctly offering consumer incentives to improve cybersecurity posture. Digital-Forward and Data-First institutions have significantly more intuitive administrative interfaces for their employees, with 38% and 53% respectively reporting their digital banking admin consoles are more intuitive than other technologies in their stack. "Today's most digitally mature institutions are accelerating their AI adoption by leveraging advanced data capabilities, while also redefining 'user experience' to include employees within the workflow," said Allison Cerra, chief marketing officer at Alkami. "These advancements—paired with a more progressive risk posture—are helping them widen their lead. Yet, the data shows this remains a fluid market. Any institution, regardless of size, can turn digital maturity into a competitive edge, and we hope this update offers valuable insights to do just that." Sound Off: June 4, 2025
Sun Herald readers weigh in on local and national topics. Selena Gomez recently said about her dear friend Taylor Swift, 'We don't agree on everything, but we respect each other with everything.' Oh that liberals and conservatives could relate to one another like that! Our nation would be infinitely better off. The judicial overreach by liberal Democrat judges is simple. How can a city or county circuit judge rule over the entire United States of America? Doesn't make sense. Former president Bill Clinton stated that he did not see any cognitive decline in Joe Biden. Must be true because everybody knows Bill would never tell a lie. The denizens of the deep state are finally emerging from the depths of the swamp. They are the appointees of the Trump administration. The Supreme Court just blocked an attempt to ban legal purchase of semiautomatic weapons. Now they need to get rid of the block on automatic weapons. Criminals have them, so law abiding citizens should be able to get them. Criminals shouldn't have an advantage over law abiding citizens. I generally understand the theories of how we can increase revenues to the federal treasury. We can create growth with reductions in tax, federal waste, reform and any other program that we can introduce hoping to that end result. What I do not understand is, if it does work, how are we going to stop Congress from spending all that savings and not using any of it to actually pay down the existing debt. Let's add an amendment to any new legislation making it mandatory the savings apply only to old debt. The president, and FOX Entertainment should be ashamed for their absence of integrity and morals. You'd think that an educated Republican would see the collusion between lying FOX News and President Trump's placement of unqualified FOX News and entertainment anchors on his Cabinet and even watchdog agencies. It was disappointing to see a post in which the writer was promoting anger. This individual didn't agree with the idea there was a store trailer a few feet from a 'no mobile vending' sign. This person asks in the post 'where is your anger, people'? I agree with the main point of the post. But anger? Why does any disagreement bring anger, let alone such a petty issue. I had no intention of voting in the Gulfport mayoral race this year. As a result of the shenanigans of last week I have changed my mind. I have decided to go vote and hold my nose as I mark my ballot. I don't know if the billing department for the Gulfport water department is disorganized or technologically outdated, but once again I've gotten a late bill with 2 payments due. If local elections didn't allow a candidate to identify with a party, none of the absolute garbage and insanity would be going on in Gulfport. There is no need for party identification on the local level. Cities here are small enough that a candidate can campaign without such attachment for funding. The party ideology has no place in running our cities. This election is a perfect example of how asinine it is to attach yourself so vehemently to a party. Residents can't make a reasonably good choice because the waters are so muddy you don't know who these people really are to even make a decent decision. A GOP senator was defending cuts to Medicaid saying 'we are all going to die.' Yes, but we want to be cared for until the end. Maybe they will legalize euthanasia next.
