"West Bengal rapidly turning into rape capital of India": Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar
Hooghly (West Bengal) [India], June 3 (ANI): Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar slammed the West Bengal government on Monday, claiming that the state is 'rapidly turning into the rape capital of India.' His comments came during a visit to Hooghly, where he met the family of a rape victim.
A 13-yeard-old girl, who had been missing since May 27, was allegedly raped and murdered. The Srirampur Court in Hooghly sent the accused to custody.
'The most disturbing part is that the girl, who went missing on the 27th, was later found completely naked. She was also differently-abled. Unfortunately, this is not the only incident -- West Bengal is rapidly turning into the rape capital of India,' Majumdar told ANI.
Earlier on Monday, Majumdar also visited the family of Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, who was repatriated to India on May 14 after being held in custody by Pakistan Rangers since April 23.
Majumdar praised the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to bring the BSF jawan back.
'On the first day, when I spoke to his wife, the entire family was devastated. But despite the pain, they showed remarkable patience. Following that, under the leadership of our Prime Minister, and with the efforts of the Home Minister and Defence Minister, Purnam Kumar Shaw has been brought back home safely. This is truly commendable. Even earlier, under this leadership, we successfully brought Wing Commander Abhinandan back. This is the mark of a new India under PM Modi,' he said.
Earlier on May 24, the BSF jawan expressed joy and relief upon arriving in his hometown of Rishra, West Bengal.
'I feel good. I came here to meet the people after the operation... I was worried about my parents, so I came home and met my entire family... I was there during the time of Operation Sindoor, and my parents were worried, so I came to meet them,' the BSF Jawan said.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed happiness over BSF Jawan PK Shaw's safe return. She said the Trinamool Congress government had made efforts for his safe return.
Bengal CM told reporters that they had been in touch with Purnam Shaw's wife, Rajani Shaw, throughout and spoke to her four or five times. (ANI)

A new framework to govern Ladakh
The regulations regarding Ladakh notified by the Centre on Tuesday are significant for multiple reasons. One, it suggests a direction for addressing governance concerns in the Union territory (UT), a first since 2019, when Article 370 was abrogated and Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two UTs. Two, it provides partial redress to concerns that local communities raised, and highlighted in their 2023 protests, regarding safeguards for their unique regional identity, culture, and material resources. Three, a stable Ladakh with a robust governance structure and infrastructure is essential since the UT shares a restive border with China: Indian and Chinese troops clashed in the Galwan Valley in 2020 and the stand-off continued till October last year. The new rules address matters related to domicile status and job quotas (85% reservation for Ladakhis excluding economically weaker section quota), which, hopefully, will assuage the fears about large-scale settlement of 'outsiders' in this ecologically sensitive terrain. The rules concerning domicile status are similar to those in Jammu and Kashmir, though Ladakh has no elected legislature. This means regulations governing Ladakh are executive decisions made by the Centre — in this case in consultation with local representatives — and not the outcome of deliberations in an elected House. It would also mean that these regulations can be changed, withdrawn or amended through executive orders and without the approval of local stakeholders. Though such fears seem unwarranted, the Centre must have a conversation with the broader segment of Ladakhi voices if necessary, and ensure that the regulations, say for the protection of local languages, become enabling provisions. After all, the call in Ladakh has been for statehood and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, which provides legislative, executive, judicial and financial powers, and the current initiative falls short of that demand.

The TOI correspondent from Washington: An indirect war of words erupted between Indian and Pakistani delegations on Wednesday as they arrived separately in the US capital to present their respective versions of the Pahalgam terrorist attack, Operation Sindoor , and the Kashmir issue , and the growing rift between the two nations. The spat was triggered by gratuitous remarks by Bilawal Bhutto, leader of the Pakistani delegation, who at a press conference at the United Nations in New York, likened Prime Minister Narendra Modi to a "Temu version of (Benjamin) Netanyahu...a poor copy" as he sought to draw parallels between India's punitive response to Pahalgal and Israeli actions in Gaza. Temu is a Chinese ecommerce website/app that sells discounted merchandize. The Indian delegation wasted no time smacking back. "Pakistan is a country that is surviving with inferior products borrowed from China, including military hardware. It must be hurting to see authentic, high-caliber military hardware and also strong democratic leadership on the other side of the border," clapped back Tejasvi Surya, a member of the Indian team, as it arrived in Washington DC and began meetings with US lawmakers, think-tanks, and social media influencers. "A country that is busy creating fake heroes, by promoting failed Generals, will never know what true leaders look like," Surya added. Shashi Tharoor, leader of the Indian delegation, appeared to have anticipated the clash, almost with a sense of relish, noting as the team arrived in Washington DC that the Pakistanis would also be there at the same time "so there's going to be perhaps an increase in interest because there are two duelling delegations in the same city." But Bhutto was down for the count even before got to Washington when he was ambushed at the UN as he tried to enlist sympathetic journalists with planted questions aimed at amplifying Pakistan's narrative about India's treatment of Muslims. Embarrassingly for him, a reporter called him out saying he had watched the briefings on both sides and "as far as I recall, there were Muslim Indian military officers who were conducting the briefings on the Indian side. " Bhutto also claimed that Pakistan radars had locked into 20 Indian jets on the night of May 7 and "If we wanted, we could've taken down all 20," but Pakistan showed restraint and"only 6 were shot down — the ones that launched strikes." He also rolled out the familiar trope about Pakistan being a "victim of terrorism" -- in a city where Pakistani nationals Ramzi Yousuf and Khalid Shaikh Mohammed launched attacks on the World Trade Center in 1993 and 2001. Minister slams Lakshadweep administration for ‘removing' Arabic, Mahal languages from school curriculum
Kerala General Education Minister V. Sivankutty on Wednesday slammed the reported decision of the Lakshadweep administration to remove Arabic and Mahal languages from the school curriculum of the Union Territory and said it is 'deeply disturbing' and deserves the 'strongest condemnation.'' This move, taken under the guise of implementing the National Education Policy (NEP), blatantly contradicts the Union government's professed commitment to promoting mother tongues and regional diversity in education, he said in a statement. By denying Lakshadweep's children the opportunity to learn their own language, the Centre is violating the constitutional rights of linguistic minorities. By doing so, it is undermining the very pluralism and inclusiveness that define our nation, the senior Left leader said. ''Language is not merely a medium of communication. It is a carrier of identity, history, and culture. The systematic erasure of native languages through education policy is nothing less than an assault on the cultural fabric of our society,' Mr. Sivankutty said. The Minister recalled that the Government of Kerala had earlier raised strong concerns about the underlying intent and direction of the PM SHRI project and the broader NEP framework. 'Our decision to oppose its implementation in the State was based on precisely such apprehensions--that centralised policies would override regional, linguistic, and cultural realities in the name of standardisation,' he said. Pointing out that education is a subject in the Concurrent List of the Constitution, the Minister said both the Centre and States have a role in its governance. 'Any attempt by the Union government to unilaterally impose educational directives that marginalise local languages and cultures is a clear case of overreach and must be resisted,' he said. Expressing strong solidarity with the people of Lakshadweep on this issue, Mr. Sivankutty urged all democratic forces, educators, and civil society organisations to raise their voices against this 'linguistic injustice' and to demand an immediate reversal of the decision, the statement added.
