"West Bengal rapidly turning into rape capital of India": Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar

Hooghly (West Bengal) [India], June 3 (ANI): Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar slammed the West Bengal government on Monday, claiming that the state is 'rapidly turning into the rape capital of India.' His comments came during a visit to Hooghly, where he met the family of a rape victim. A 13-yeard-old girl, who had been missing since May 27, was allegedly raped and murdered. The Srirampur Court in Hooghly sent the accused to custody. 'The most disturbing part is that the girl, who went missing on the 27th, was later found completely naked. She was also differently-abled. Unfortunately, this is not the only incident -- West Bengal is rapidly turning into the rape capital of India,' Majumdar told ANI. Earlier on Monday, Majumdar also visited the family of Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, who was repatriated to India on May 14 after being held in custody by Pakistan Rangers since April 23. Majumdar praised the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to bring the BSF jawan back. 'On the first day, when I spoke to his wife, the entire family was devastated. But despite the pain, they showed remarkable patience. Following that, under the leadership of our Prime Minister, and with the efforts of the Home Minister and Defence Minister, Purnam Kumar Shaw has been brought back home safely. This is truly commendable. Even earlier, under this leadership, we successfully brought Wing Commander Abhinandan back. This is the mark of a new India under PM Modi,' he said. Earlier on May 24, the BSF jawan expressed joy and relief upon arriving in his hometown of Rishra, West Bengal. 'I feel good. I came here to meet the people after the operation... I was worried about my parents, so I came home and met my entire family... I was there during the time of Operation Sindoor, and my parents were worried, so I came to meet them,' the BSF Jawan said. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed happiness over BSF Jawan PK Shaw's safe return. She said the Trinamool Congress government had made efforts for his safe return. Bengal CM told reporters that they had been in touch with Purnam Shaw's wife, Rajani Shaw, throughout and spoke to her four or five times. (ANI)

Delhi court permits NIA to take custody of CRPF jawan on charges of espionage

A Delhi court on Friday allowed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take the custody of a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan caught on espionage charges for leaking sensitive information to Pakistan's intelligence officers in lieu of money. The order followed the arrest of CRPF jawan by NIA on May 21 as part of the agency's nationwide crackdown following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 in which 26 civilians lost their lives. The case is being probed by NIA. Special judge (NIA) Chanderjit Singh of Patiala House Courts said, 'The allegations affect the national security as well as lives of citizens visiting India and Indian citizens.' The court granted NIA 15-day custody to gather further details with regard to the information passed on by the jawan and his links across the border. While the hearing of the case was held in-camera, a copy of the order, seen by HT, indicated that the CRPF jawan had shared information about Indian security operations and installations to Pakistan's intelligence officers over the past few months. In his six-page order, Special Judge Chanderjit Singh noted how senior CRPF officers questioned the jawan on May 17 based on 'information regarding an exchange of information between him and anti-state elements' and handed him over to NIA on May 21, when he was formally arrested. The judge said, 'Armed forces are the pillar on the basis of which strength and security of the nation is measured and is dependent upon. Any attempt to violate it in such manner which may lead to irreparable damage is an issue which requires investigation'. Following the expiry of the custody period, the jawan will be produced before the court next on June 6. Section 43-D of UAPA, which addresses the investigation period and bail conditions for the accused allows the NIA to obtain police custody of an accused for up to 30 days.

BSF jawan from Bengal thanks countrymen upon reaching home over a week after release by Pak

The BSF constable had been taken into custody by Pakistan Rangers on April 23, after he inadvertently crossed the international border in Punjab's Ferozepur district. His accidental crossing came just a day after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which had further heightened border tensions. Shaw was handed over to Indian authorities on May 14 following three weeks of captivity in the neighbouring country. Kolkata, May 23 (PTI) BSF jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw thanked all countrymen for their good wishes upon reaching his home in West Bengal's Hooghly district on Friday, over a week after his release by Pakistan Rangers. Surrounded by relatives and friends at his residence, Shaw told reporters that he came home to meet his anxious parents, wife and other family members. 'I came home as my parents were in tension and it feels good to meet all family members,' he said. 'It feels very good that my countrymen were all waiting for my return,' the BSF jawan said as he travelled in a flower-bedecked open jeep amid cheers from people who thronged the streets to have a glimpse of Shaw. Earlier in the day, Shaw arrived at Howrah station, where he was greeted by his family and well-wishers with chants of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Vande Mataram.' His father, Bholenath Shaw, who had been waiting for hours on the platform, hugged him tightly. Security personnel quickly formed a cordon around Shaw and his family as hundreds of people tried to shake his hand and offer greetings. A visibly exhausted yet smiling Shaw told the jostling media, 'I am happy to be back and to meet my near and dear ones.' Shaw and his family were then escorted in battery-operated vehicles to the car parking stand adjacent to the Howrah station's new complex. Upon reaching his hometown Rishra, they were welcomed by people and a band playing patriotic tunes. The local club near his home was decorated with strings of tiny coloured bulbs, creating a festive atmosphere. His wife Rajani Shaw, who is expecting, struggled to hold back tears as neighbours and family members exchanged sweets in celebration. 'He has been serving the nation as a paramilitary personnel for 17 years. He will return to the frontiers again. We are proud of him as a brave warrior, one of those guarding the nation's borders,' said Rajani, overwhelmed with emotion. As Shaw stepped into his home, words failed him. His brother, Rahul Shaw, exclaimed, 'It feels like Diwali has returned to our area.' Describing him as a 'valiant son' of Bengal, TMC, in a post on its official X handle, said, 'Purnam Kumar Shaw, a BSF jawan who was held captive by Pakistani Rangers, has returned to his motherland.' 'His homecoming has filled Bengal with joy and pride, as the people of the state warmly received him with the honour he deserves,' it added. Purnam Shaw returned to India through the Attari-Wagah border on the evening of May 14. PTI SUS AMR ACD This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. BSF constable who spent 21 days in Pak custody reaches home in Bengal

KOLKATA: Purnam Kumar Shaw, the Border Security Force (BSF) constable from West Bengal's Hooghly district, who was released on May 14 after 21 days in custody of Pakistan Rangers, reached home at Rishra to a hero's welcome on Friday. 'Today is truly a Diwali for us. We didn't know that he was returning home today…. I got scared after he was captured by Pakistan. But not anymore. I want him to continue his job and serve the Nation,' Rajni Shaw, wife of the BSF jawan, told reporters. Shaw was apprehended by the Rangers on April 23 along the India-Pakistan border in Punjab's Ferozepur district, a day after the Pahalgam terror attack. Shaw was detained after he accidentally crossed the Zero Line while guarding a group of local farmers in the Ferozepur sector. He was handed over to India on May 14 after the two countries exchanged one detained soldier each at the Wagah-Attari border. 'I am happy that I am returning home. I had earlier spoken with my wife over phone after being released. Now I would get to see my son, wife and parents face-to-face,' Shaw told reporters after getting off the train at Howrah station. As the news of his return spread, the local municipality organised a rally in the evening and Shaw was given a hero's welcome in his home town. 'I am extremely happy. My son is returning home. He had last come home during Holi. When he went back and joined duty he was captured. Today there will be a feast. We are cooking every dish of his choice,' Devanti Devi, his mother, told reporters.
