T.N. CM Stalin inaugurates three new ‘Thozhi' working women's hostels
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday (May 21, 2025) virtually inaugurated, from the Secretariat in Chennai, three new 'Thozhi' working women's hostels at St. Thomas Mount, Hosur, and Tiruvannamalai. Constructed at a total cost of ₹38.15 crore, the hostels can collectively accommodate 442 working women.
Mr. Stalin also laid the foundation stones for 14 new 'Thozhi' working women's hostels to be constructed at a cost of ₹176.93 crore in Taramani and Chepauk in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Nagapattinam, Krishnagiri, Erode, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Dharmapuri, Theni, Sivaganga, Ranipet, and Karur, which could accommodate over 2,000 working women, once completed.
According to an official press release, the Tamil Nadu government had initiated the 'Thozhi' hostels scheme to overcome the challenges faced by women who migrate from their native places to work in cities. These hostels are run by the Department of Social Welfare and Women Development in various districts to provide safe, quality, and affordable accommodation to working women.
Currently, 16 'Thozhi' hostels are functioning in 13 districts, which could accommodate a total of 1,380 working women. These hostels are equipped with biometric access, round-the-clock security, WiFi, CCTV surveillance, purified drinking water, nutritious food, television, laundry and vehicle parking facilities, at an affordable cost, the release added.
Appointment orders
Further, Mr. Stalin issued appointment orders to 115 persons on compassionate grounds to the Police Department. They would be posted as Record Assistants and at reception desks in police stations.
A press release said that Mr. Stalin had previously announced in the Assembly that reception desks would be established in all police stations to improve services to the public, and 1,132 persons, who are legal heirs of deceased police personnel, would be appointed on compassionate grounds. Since 2021, as many as 17,436 persons have been appointed to the Police Department in various ranks, including 41 Deputy Superintendents of Police, 444 Sub-Inspectors, and 16,199 Grade-II Constables, the release added.
Mr. Stalin also issued appointment orders to 36 persons selected for various posts in the Department of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare, and 18 persons selected for various posts in the Department of Milk and Dairy Development.
Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment P. Geetha Jeevan, Minister for Fisheries, Fishermen Welfare and Animal Husbandry Anitha R. Radhakrishnan, Minister for Milk and Dairy Development T. Mano Thangaraj, and senior government officials were among others present.

The AIADMK government was voted out because it was against farmers: Stalin
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said on Wednesday that farmers had voted out the previous AIADMK government because it had acted against their interests. At the inauguration of a two-day agricultural exhibition organised by the Department of Horticulture and Plantation Crops near the Vijayamangalam toll gate at Perundurai, he said the AIADMK had supported three controversial farm laws introduced by the Union government and betrayed farmers in every possible way. 'Such political weeds must be uprooted from the country,' he said. Mr. Stalin said 128 'Uzhavar Sandhais' were closed when the AIADMK was in power. After the DMK assumed office, these markets were revived and 16 new ones were established to boost the incomes of farmers. 'Unlike the previous rulers, the Dravidian Model government will always protect your interests. Our 2.0 government will return after the next election,' he said. He said the State government's schemes helped to produce a record 458 lakh metric tonnes of grain over four years, with productivity rising from 2,735 kg a hectare in 2020-21 to 2,871 kg a hectare in 2024-25. He attributed this growth to the State's first-ever dedicated agriculture budget. Mr. Stalin said ₹62,352 crore had been disbursed in crop loans and free electricity connections had been given to 1.87 lakh farmers so far, against the target of 2 lakh. 'We have spent ₹26,523 crore on free electricity supply alone,' he said. Without naming anyone, he added, 'We're not fake farmers who wear towels on their shoulders; we are the first to stand in solidarity with farmers.' The State, he said, gave away ₹1,630 crore in compensation for crop damage and ₹5,720 crore to 32 lakh farmers under the crop insurance scheme in the past four years. He also listed the key projects implemented in Erode: the Turmeric Research Station, the renovation of the Lower Bhavani Project Canal, the construction of eight check-dams across the Bhavani, and the implementation of the Athikadavu-Avinashi Project. Mr. Stalin inaugurated 16 projects completed at a cost of ₹15.70 crore, laid the foundation for 11 projects costing ₹159.53 crore, and distributed ₹25.41 crore in welfare assistance to 4,524 beneficiaries. Ministers E.V. Velu, M.R.K. Panneerselvam, S. Muthusamy, M.P. Saminathan, and N. Kayalvizhi Selvaraj; MPs and MLAs; Collector Raja Gopal Sunkara; and officials were present.

DMK Drav Model 2.0 govt will rule TN again in 2026 : Stalin
Erode, June 11 (UNI) Asserting that the ruling DMK has launched various welfare measures for the agriculturists, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin said the DMK's Dravidian Model 2.0 will form the government again in 2026 and more schemes would be launched for the farmers. Stating that the DMK was always an agri-friendly government and listed out various initiatives implemented by it, Mr Stalin launched a scathing attack on the previous AIADMK regime and accused it of betraying the farmers in every possible way. Speaking after inaugurating an Agri Expo and a conference at Perundurai in this district, he said the AIADMK rule was like weeds growing among crops--disruptive and harmful to agriculture. Accusing the AIADMK of supporting the three farm laws enacted by the Centre that were aimed at snatching the rights of the agriculturists, the Chief Minister said "only for such acts of betrayal, you have defeated the AIADMK (in 2021 polls and installed the DMK in power". Highlighting Erode's contribution to agriculture, the Chief Minister said, 'Known as the turmeric capital of India, Erode ranks 8th in agricultural development in the state. "For the first time in Tamil Nadu's history, our government has presented a separate budget for the agriculture sector', he added Stalin said Tamil Nadu had produced 458 lakh metric tonnes of food grains in the past four years under the DMK regime. 'It is because of our farmers that we have food and good health. Their hard work ensures people live happily,' he said. Referring to the DMK's approach since taking office, he said, 'We renamed the Agriculture Department as the Department of Farmers' Welfare to reflect our commitment. We are not fake farmers who just wear a green shawl for appearance. If a farmer faces a problem, I will be the first to stand by their side.' In a sharp critique, Stalin said, 'Farmers know how weeds sprout among crops. The AIADMK government was like those weeds. It betrayed farmers in every aspect. Think back—didn't you have to protest for every basic need during their rule?' He also pointed out that the number of farmer suicides was higher during the previous AIADMK regime. In contrast, under the current DMK 'Dravidian Model government' he said, efforts are being made to protect and support the farming community. Polavaram will be completed by 2027
Eluru: Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu on Tuesday inspected the Polavaram project works at the field level and conducted a review of the works. On the occasion, he measured the diaphragm wall panel thickness in the presence of journalists and showed that it was 1.5 metres. He said in a press release that the propaganda of a Telugu daily that the diaphragm wall panel thickness had been reduced to 0.9 meters was wrong. He alleged that the 'anti-development' YSRCP does not want the Polavaram project to be completed. Minister Ramanaidu said that the project work is progressing at a rapid pace as per the time-bound schedule taken jointly by the CWC, irrigation officials and construction agencies under the leadership of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. The minister said that Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has already inspected the Polavaram project works at the field level three times. He said that Naidu himself is reviewing the Polavaram works every 15 days in the Secretariat. He expressed confidence that the target of completing the diaphragm wall construction this year is going to be achieved. He explained that more than 80 percent of the Polavaram head works have already been completed. The minister clarified that there is no compromise on quality in the construction of the Polavaram project. He once again clarified that the coalition government, with the support of Prime Minister Modi, under the capable leadership of Naidu, will complete the Polavaram project by December 2027. Polavaram MLA Balaraju, Polavaram constituency TDP in-charge Boragam Srinivas, Irrigation Advisor M Venkateswara Rao, ENC Narasimhamurthy, Megha Engineering Director Subbaiah, and other irrigation officials and agency representatives participated in this visit.
