Valkyries' confidence in Cecilia Zandalasini set stage for Atlanta game-winner
Zandalasini has yet to find consistency, not playing more than four games in a row — and she missed Thursday's G olden State Valkyries game at Washington with a minor ankle sprain. But when she has had the opportunity, she's given the coaching staff every reason to feel confident in her when she has the ball.
'She knows how to read the defense in different situations, so we trust her with the ball,' Powell told the Chronicle. 'So it's just putting her in those kinds of situations and letting her read the defense. Either we get the shot or we get her going to the rim, and we know she can do both.'
The Italian forward went to the rim four times at Atlanta, but her last two shots in the paint were the most important.

Valkyries survive fourth-quarter wilting to win on jumper with 3.9 seconds to go
In her final two layups, Zandalasini went to her right off a pick-and-roll. The Dream hesitated to switch defenders against Valkyries' screens, leaving Allisha Gray a step behind Zandalasini as she received the pass from Tiffany Hayes and quickly drove to the hoop. That left Zandalasini the space and momentum to take the comfortable, game-winning shot with 3.9 seconds left on the clock with Gray defending in isolation.
'I need to be more aggressive than I've been in previous games,' Zandalasini said Thursday. 'When I get the space to pull off shots, though, they want me to be confident.'
Nakase has talked about the Valkyries finding the right reads to get spacing since preseason. Zandalasini used center Temi Fagbenle 's screens all game to get the space to drive to the hoop and catch Atlanta in uncomfortable defensive matchups.
'Everybody executed,' Zandalasini said of the final play. 'I was able to get space, and I took the shot I had.'
Golden State rode Zandalasini's good shooting to start the second quarter. The Valkyries haven't always gone with the hot shooter mid-game, instead often sticking to their initial gameplan and anticipated matchups.
'Our offense is always distributed pretty equally, because it's all about making the right reads, so it's not like one person has to take over,' Nakase said. 'As long as we make the right reads to stay space, then it will go into the hands of whoever's hot. That's how we kind of play our game.'
Zandalasini's game-tying layup with 2:47 to play foreshadowed her game-winner. She used a Fagbenle screen to attack to the right, but was more patient with the screen. The Dream likely anticipated a similar reaction on her last drive, but instead, she attacked with urgency.
It was a play that was a nearly full game in the making.
'Sometimes it doesn't matter who has the hot hand because of who is guarding them,' Powell said. 'There are some defenders we stay away from. What's unique about our team is other people can get hot, we were lucky Ceci did that (in Atlanta).'
Let it fly: Don't look now, but the Valkyries went into Thursday's game shooting 35.3% from 3-point range over their previous nine games.
That marks quite an improvement for Golden State, which ranks 12th (next to last) with an overall 31.3% effort behind the line. The recent success has pushed that mark up from 28.1% at the end of June.
'We had to get more high-quality shots,' said point guard Veronica Burton. 'We try to let it fly, but mostly when we get those looks. Maybe we've gotten better at identifying those. I think maybe when we get aggressive and attack the paint, it opens up more space for more high-quality (3-point) looks.'
The six best 3-point shooting games from the Valkyries have all come since June 27. Interestingly, they are 3-3 in those games, the same record as their six worst 3-point shooting games of the season.
In games where they shoot at least 33 3-pointers, the Valkyries are 0-6, though. Nakase has wanted the team to 'let it fly' all season without worrying so much about the percentages, but when the Valkyries do it willy-nilly, they've lost games.
When they've taken 28 or fewer 3-pointers they are 5-1. So the Valkyries' 3-point woes might be getting better, but the way they win games has not come from behind the arc after all.
'We knew too, the way we played at the beginning, the 3-pointers were eventually just going to fall,' Nakase said. 'It just took some time to feel very comfortable for players that haven't shot that many 3s and that lead in fly mentality.'

Liverpool line-ups vs Athletic Club as Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike decisions made
Liverpool play their final friendly matches of the summer this afternoon when the Reds entertain Athletic Club in two games at Anfield. The double-header will mark the final warm-up games for Arne Slot's side before they face Crystal Palace in the Community Shield on Sunday. The first meeting between the two sides kicks off at 5pm at Anfield, before a second match gets underway at 8pm. Slot will likely split his resources for the two games to allow his players to get as many minutes as possible as they step up their preparations for the new season. And with new signings Florian Wirtz, Huge Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Giorgi Mamardashvili all still settling it, all eyes will be on Anfield to see how the defending Premier League champions look ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. READ MORE: Cody Gakpo on Liverpool transfers, injury setbacks and honouring Diogo Jota READ MORE: Mohamed Salah facing biggest challenge yet as Liverpool star looks to delay the inevitable But how should Liverpool line-up for the two games? Our ECHO writers have their say: Theo Squires Liverpool's pre-season comes to an end with this double-header against Athletic Bilbao. I'd like to see Arne Slot select his stronger XI for the second of the two friendlies against the La Liga outfit at 8pm at Anfield. We've not seen any footage of the Reds in training since their return from Asia, so it is unclear if Alisson Becker is yet back with the group or if Joe Gomez is still troubled by a minor Achilles injury. If Alisson is available, Giorgi Mamardashvili can starts at 5pm. Jeremie Frimpong gets a run out at right-back with Wataru Endo and Joe Gomez starting at centre-back. If the England international is still sidelined, Kostas Tsimikas gets the nod instead. Andy Robertson captains the side while Ryan Gravenberch starts in midfield. He can be with the 5pm side, purely because he's suspended for the Premier League opener against AFC Bournemouth, and is partnered by Trey Nyoni. Harvey Elliott starts at number 10, flanked by Ben Doak and Rio Ngumoha, with Darwin Nunez leading the line. Meanwhile, it's a stronger side at 8pm with Alisson in goal and an unchanged back four from the side that started against Yokohama. Curtis Jones partners Dominik Szoboszlai, with Alexis Mac Allister limited to substitute duty as he steps up his return from injury. Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo are on the flanks with Florian Wirtz at number 10, and Hugo Ekitike upfront. My 5pm team (4-2-3-1:) Mamardashvili; Frimpong, Endo, Gomez/Tsimikas, Robertson; Gravenberch, Nyoni; Doak, Elliott, Ngumoha; Nunez. My 8pm team (4-2-3-1:) Alisson; Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Jones, Szoboszlai; Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo; Ekitike. Joe Rimmer Liverpool's last two pre-season performances have raised a fair few questions ahead of the new campaign. Against AC Milan, the Reds showed some real class going forward but were exposed time and again on the break by the Italian giants. Then in the game against Yokohama, Liverpool struggled to assert their authority in the early goings before finally turning the screw late in the match. It's why in these two games I'd like to see Arne Slot pick two sides that offer an opportunity to what may be his first choice XI, before a strong second string can stake their claim to break into that team in the other game. The likes of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike feature in the 'stronger' line-up, for me. With Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez lining up in the second side. Full-back and attack are two areas in which Slot has options to change things, so it'll be intriguing what he picks for his side. My 5pm team (4-2-3-1:) Mamardashvili; Frimpong, Endo, Gomez/Tsimikas, Kerkez; Jones, Nyoni; Doak, Elliott, Ngumoha; Nunez. My 8pm team (4-2-3-1:) Alisson; Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Szoboszlai; Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo; Ekitike.

Arrest Made After Fan Throws Sex Toy Onto WNBA Court
Arrest Made After Fan Throws Sex Toy Onto WNBA Court originally appeared on The Spun. As the WNBA continues to try to get to the bottom of fans' recent sex toy stunts, an arrest has been made according to the league. During the fourth quarter of Tuesday night's game between the Golden State Valkyries and Atlanta Dream, someone in the Gateway Center crowd reportedly threw a toy onto the court — which was later followed up by a similar incident a few days later in Chicago. There's no word as of right now about whether or not that person has been arrested. But the fan involved in throwing the object in Atlanta has reportedly been taken into custody by police. "The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league. Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans," the league said in a statement. "In line with WNBA Arena Security Standards, any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities." The incidents in question have garnered reaction from across the league including from Sky center Elizabeth Williams who said Friday: "It's super disrespectful. I don't really get the point of it. It's really immature. Whoever is doing it needs to grow up." It isn't clear what exactly is prompting this recent trend of throwing toys onto WNBA courts but its something the league is seemingly wasting no time addressing. Hopefully the W's arenas are able to improve security measures moving forward but given the items we're talking about here Lord only knows where they could be Made After Fan Throws Sex Toy Onto WNBA Court first appeared on The Spun on Aug 3, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 3, 2025, where it first appeared.
