'Just absurd': Wallabies fans fume over missed Tom Lynagh act as TMO drama baffles

Yahoo15 hours ago
Wallabies fans may have been thrilled to have defeated the Lions 22-12 as lightning brought a halt to the game on Saturday night, but the missed incident on Tom Lynagh has once again frustrated rugby union fans. The Wallabies showed there was still plenty of pride left in the green and gold jersey on Saturday having outplayed the Lions across the full 80 minutes.
Tom Hooper was player-of-the-match having filled in for Rob Valentini with aplomb as the Aussies were more physical than the Lions in the pouring rain. And the Aussies managed the consolation victory without flyhalf Lynagh who didn't come back on the field in the second-half after failing a HIA.
Lynagh suffered a head knock during a clean out and went off the field and didn't return. Although replays showed Dan Sheehan charged into the ruck and collected Lynagh high.
Lynagh was bracing for the impact, but it was still deemed dangerous play by many viewing. The incident comes after the Wallabies fans felt aggrieved they were not granted a penalty in the final seconds of last week's game at the MCG over a controversial ruck moment.
But Sheehan's effort was more overt than last week and most fans agreed it was clear foul play. The Wallabies lost Lynagh for the game, with Ben Donaldson coming on, while the Lions escaped any sanction.
What made the missed Lynagh moment even more frustrating was the TMO raised two other incidents against the Wallabies that were not nearly as dangerous. Nic White, playing his final game in the Wallabies jersey, rushed through the defensive line of the Lions at one stage and caused a handling error.
Although the game came to a halt as the TMO reviewed what appeared to be minimal contact from White. Nothing came of the incident. Then one of the Wallabies' best, Joseph Suaalii, was at the centre of attention.
With only a couple of minutes left, Suaalii made a last-ditch tackle to stop the Lions from going over for a consolation try. Although the TMO reviewed it and deemed it slightly high, but the on-field referee did not believe it was worthy of a card. But the TMO took its time reviewing the situation. And fans were left frustrated with world rugby and the TMO with the officials so willing to check every incident in the game, except the missed Lynagh high tackle.
Two of the most ridiculous TMO reviews in the history of rugby tonight - the White 'shoulder charge' and the Sua'ali'i 'shoulder charge' were both the biggest wastes of time. All after not reviewing the Lynagh hit.Just absurd.#AUSvLIO #LionsTour2025

Off! (Shoulda been.) https://t.co/8f19vACovk

So, just to be clear:This TMO will stop the game to check literally EVERYTHING except Dan Sheehan's hit that took Lynagh out. What are we doing here.

That has to be one of the worst TMO interventions in the history of the game #LionsTour2025

Disgrace. Red card every day of the week. So dangerous. You can see Lynagh brace as he knows it's coming. Will World Rugby stand behind their refs again this week? In a situation like this (no matter who is playing) would have no qualms if refs hooked offending player at HT. https://t.co/ApXbOo8qIW

Wallabies win after game halted for lightning
The Wallabies managed to stop the Lions from becoming the first team to win a 3-0 series in Australia since 1904. Although while the celebrations were dampened, the Lions had already secured the trophy with a controversial 29-26 win in Melbourne last Saturday having won the Brisbane opener 27-19.
But there is plenty of excitement around this Wallabies team with coach Joe Schmidt managing to get up without the likes of Alan Alaalatoa, Valetini and Jake Gordon in the XV. Losing early didn't help and the weather was havoc.
The game was stopped for 40 minutes in the second-half when lightning came within 10km of Accor Stadium. But the players returned to the soaking pitch with the Wallabies coming out stronger from the break. And captain Harry Wilson was thrilled with his team's bounce back after such a devastating setback last week.
"So proud," Wilson said after the game. "Obviously it was a disappointing week this week after such a tough loss. To bounce back the way we did, to play an 80-minute performance, I'm so proud of everyone.
We just wanted this game so badly. Whatever we had to do, we had to do. "To get the win was special."

AFL fans call out Demons over Simon Goodwin's farewell snub as club great in shock

Melbourne Demons great Garry Lyon has been left shocked at the timing of Simon Goodwin's axing with three games left to go in the season with suggestions the veteran is unlikely to coach a farewell game. On Tuesday morning it emerged the Melbourne Demons had sacked Goodwin following a convincing 83-point win over West Coast. There were suggestions Goodwin would be let go if Melbourne lost to West Coast on the weekend. The demolition of the lowly Eagles seemed to quell the noise momentarily with a decision to be made at the end of the season. Although the win didn't save Goodwin from the axe with the timing of the move leaving supporters in shock. Goodwin coached Melbourne to their first premiership in 57 years years back in 2021 having taken over from Paul Roos. But Goodwin had only managed to coach the Demons to seven wins in 2025 and performances across the last few years had prompted calls for change. And Lyon admitted he was struggling to get his head around the decision to pull the trigger with three games left to go. Speaking on SEN Radio as the news dropped, Lyon suggested there might not be a farewell game for Goodwin who deserved a send off having delivered the side their only premiership in recent times. 'I'm stunned, shocked, totally shocked,' Lyon said on SEN Radio. 'I had no heads up on this whatsoever. Absolutely just shocked, I can't get my head around it. He won't be coaching a farewell game, that's something I can promise you.' And fans have echoed Lyon's confusion to why the decision happened now. Many feel the Demons had left the decision so late it was only right to let Goodwin see out the season and have a farewell. With little to play for, the fans could have got behind the coach with three games left if they let him ride out the season. Unfortunately, it appears Goodwin and Melbourne will go their separate ways immediately with the supporters most likely not given an opportunity to get behind their premiership-winning coach one last time. I think a parting of ways at the end of the season would have been more respectful to our only premiership coach in nearly 70 years but a change was you Simon Goodwin for helping turn our club around and the memory of 2021 ❤️💙@melbournefc #AFL — Julian Cross (@CrossJulian) August 4, 2025 Shocked by the decision to sack Goodwin right now. Hope he is remembered as a legend of the footy club. What the Demons do next is very interesting…Do they see this as an opportunity to challenge again with a fresh voice? Or is it a total wipe out of star players? — Matt Nevett (@matt_nevett_) August 4, 2025 Can't but feel like we could've waited until the end of the year & given our only living premiership coach a bit of a send off. 100% the right call but jeez this man delivered something that I never thought we'd ever see. Thanks Goody that day in 2021 will be forever the greatest — James Plunkett (@jplunkett21) August 4, 2025 Lyon felt the call came prematurely with Goodwin's stature as a premiership winner going to see him reach the end of the season. 'I'm absolutely stunned. I thought there would be a long review at the end of this year and then determine whether he would coach out his final year,' he added. 'Premiership coaches are pretty rare at the Melbourne footy club. He's one of four. He will be a hero of this football club forever and a day, but that obviously doesn't guarantee your tenure. This is a massive call.' Melbourne making moves with Simon Goodwin axing After Melbourne capitulated in round 20, Goodwin shut down outside noise and said he was fully committed to the job at hand. "I feel incredibly supported by the board, I have for nine years," Goodwin said last Thursday. "We've been able to go through these challenges before with clarity and strength and stability to create success." Goodwin won the 2021 flag with one of the youngest teams of the modern era and started their 2022 title defence in solid form. However, Goodwin couldn't get past the early stages of the finals since the flag having exited in straight sets in 2022 and 2023. Last year, Melbourne finished in 14th and they currently sit in 12th and are out of finals contention. The Demons hierarchy may have called time on Goodwin's season with three games to go in a bid to get ahead of their rivals in the search for a new head coach. There are suggestions a number of teams could be looking at change for the 2026 season and the Demons have made their move first. Only last week, AFL great Matthew Lloyd claimed he didn't think a win against the Eagles would ease the pressure on Goodwin's tenure as coach. "I don't think so, no," Lloyd said when asked on Nine's Today Show. "Moreso if they lost that game, that could spell the end for Simon Goodwin you would think, if they were to lose to West Coast who have won one game for the season. They have been off for a couple of years now, there is something not quite right."

World Aquatics Championships 2025: Leon Marchand breaks Ryan Lochte's record; Luca Urlando wins gold in butterfly

It's not a surprise that France's Léon Marchand is one of the best swimmers in the world. Marchand won four gold medals at the 2024 Olympics, destroying the competition and announcing himself as a dominant force in the sport. He took that a step further Wednesday. Marchand set a new standard in the 200m individual medley Wednesday, not only beating Ryan Lochte's record, but obliterating it by more than a second. Marchand, who won $30,000 for breaking the record, finished with a time of 1:52.69 during the semifinals Wednesday. The previous record, which was held by Lochte, was 1:54.00. Lochte set that record at the World Championships in 2011. With the win in the semifinals, Marchand will look to carry his success over to the final Thursday. Marchand won the 200m individual medley at the World Championships in both 2022 and 2023, and will look for his third gold in the event Thursday. Luca Urlando takes home gold in 200m butterfly The 200m butterfly has proved an elusive event for Team USA on the men's side following Michael Phelps' retirement. No American man had medaled in the event since 2011, Phelps' last time winning the 200m butterfly at the World Championships. But that changed Wednesday, as Luca Urlando came away with the gold. Urlando posted a 1:51:87 time, beating Poland's Krzysztof Chmielewski and Australia's Harrison Turner for the top spot. Chmielewski finished second with a time of 1:52:64. Turner came in third, posting a 1:54:17 time. The win is a long time coming for Urlando, who was on the rise before a shoulder injury derailed him in 2022. With the win, Urlando becomes the first American man to pick up a gold medal at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships. The team struggled early at the event due to an illness that caused a number of swimmers to pull out of events or post slower times than usual. The team has recovered since then, with the women leading the way. Gretchen Walsh and Katie Ledecky are among the Team USA women to pick up gold medals at the World Championships so far. Jack Alexy sets new American record in 100m freestyle American Jack Alexy looked strong during 100m freestyle prelims Wednesday. Alexy turned in an incredible time of 46.81, setting an American record. Alexy's time narrowly beat Caeleb Dressel's 46.96 from the 2019 World Championships. It was an impressive performance by Alexy, but it didn't result in a medal ... yet. Alexy still needs to compete in the final. If he can recapture his semifinal performance, Alexy could walk away from the 100m freestyle with a medal. His job did get somewhat easier Wednesday after 100m freestyle favorite Pan Zhanle was surprisingly eliminated after a poor performance in the semis.
