‘We are partners for life': Gay couple, whose love blossomed on dance floor and during ice cream dates, let the world know

Indian Express10 hours ago

In 2014, Shyam Konnur first saw Sriram Sridharan on the dance floor at a post-pride party in Bengaluru. 'I had travelled to Bengaluru for the pride event, and when I saw that young man, I thought he was cute, so I walked up to him and said so,' he recalled.
Although Sriram, commonly known as Ram among friends, was busy dancing, they ended up exchanging phone numbers by the end of the evening. On June 13, 2025, Shyam, 36, and Ram, 32, exchanged commitment vows, solidifying their lifelong relationship.
To return to how everything unfolded after their meeting on the dance floor, the next chapter of this story took place in Bengaluru in 2015. By that time, Shyam had moved to Pune for work, but Ram was still in Bengaluru, working for an IT multinational corporation.
'My mother was admitted to the hospital, and I had to rush back. After spending nearly two sleepless nights there, I messaged Ram to see if he would like to meet for an ice cream date. However, while I was waiting outside the ice cream shop, a group of thugs attempted to snatch my phone. In the chaos that ensued, I was seriously injured,' Shyam said. So, when Ram came for what was supposed to be a plain ice cream date, he met with a bleeding Shyam, who required urgent hospitalisation.
Adding another layer of complexity was the fact that Ram did not know Shyam's full name. 'I called another person who knew my full name (Samuel Konnur) to do the hospital paperwork. To date, Ram holds this against me- he says here I was rushing you to the hospital, and you did not have the courtesy to even reveal your real name,' he said.
Shyam comes from a mixed-faith marriage; his mother follows the Hindu faith, while his father has ties to the Methodist Church. Ram is from the temple town of Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu and is the only child of his parents who ran a driving school.
By 2015, both Shyam and Ram began to realise that their innocent banter over chats and phone calls was developing into something serious and beautiful. It was no surprise when, one day, during their conversations, they popped the question. 'I think Ram was the one who asked it first, but he believes it was me. In any case, we decided to enter into a long-distance relationship—he in Bengaluru and I in Pune,' Shyam said. This decision was built on numerous discussions in which the two shared many secrets that solidified their relationship.
For Shyam, working for the LGBTQIA+ community felt as natural as breathing. 'The community is like my extended family; we support each other in times of need. I spent my holidays travelling to Bengaluru to volunteer at queer events with Ram by my side. When I founded the Mist LGBTQ Foundation in Pune in 2009, Ram returned the favour and began volunteering at the events here,' he said.
Through their travels, community involvement, and volunteer work, the young men began their lives together. Ram transferred to Pune, and they began living together. Things were not always easy, as both of their families initially opposed their relationship but eventually became more accepting.
'Last year, when we travelled to Europe to participate in an AIDS conference, we decided to get married. It was a simple affair, but it sealed the bond between us,' they said.
Shyam admits that marriage was never a priority for him. However, he feels that, in a society where norms often outweigh personal beliefs, marriage serves as a symbol of acceptance. Gay couples like Shyam and Ram cannot marry in India, as same-sex marriage is still not legally recognised in the country, unlike in many European nations and other parts of the world.
Earlier this week, the couple decided to solemnise their union according to Indian customs, surrounded by family and friends. Ram said, 'My mother always believed that my relationship with Shyam was deeper than that of friends. However, she struggled to accept that he was my life partner. So, when we chose to perform the rituals, it was primarily to demonstrate to her and others that we are, indeed, life partners.'
Ram's mother, who travelled from Kumbhakonam, brought them the silk dresses they wore for the ceremonies. While she wholeheartedly participated in the events, she sometimes felt lost. 'Later, she admitted that she did not fully understand the significance of the whole event. She wanted some of the rituals to be done differently but did not know how to express that. However, she now realises that we are partners for life,' said Ram.

West Bengal: Fear lingers in Maheshtala amid return to fragile normalcy after violence

Kolkata: Fear still looms large among the residents of Maheshtala even as normalcy slowly returns to violence affected areas amid huge deployment of police and RAF, following the communal violence on Wednesday. The incident started over a "Tulsi Manch" and then several hundred people assembled, turning into a communal violence, with stone pelting, loot, arson and vandalism, including setting ablaze several police vehicles, motorbikes and autos and injury of several police personnel and senior officers. Meanwhile, three days after communal violence broke out in Maheshtala, the West Bengal Police Saturday, transferred the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) and IC of Rabindranagar Police Station in the area. People in the area, said on Sunday that the locals are still under the grip of fear, though some shops have started opening in the Akra Fatak market. However, the crowd in the market place is missing. "The shops in the Akra Fatak market are opening but very few in numbers. Hindi Sarvodaya Vidyalaya though opened on Friday, but the parents did not send their children. Mid-day meal of 150students got wasted. There are five schools in the locality but parents are fearing to send their children after the violence," a local Birendra told ET. Birendra said there is a sense of fear despite the presence of police. People have never witnessed such violence earlier, he pointed out. "The day incident happened, I went to my elder sister's house. Today, I have returned to Maheshtala. There is police picket everywhere in the area. Still the, there is a fear among the people. We have never seen such a riot since 1994," Amitabha Dasgupta, said. "People are worried what will happen and if fresh violence erupts after June 16. The BNS 163, which was imposed on the day of violence, is imposed till June 16," Dasgupta added. On Saturday, Maheshtala SDPO Kamrujjaman Molla has been transferred as assistant commandant of the State Armed Police (SAP) 3rd Battalion. Molla has been replaced by Syed Rezual Kabir, who was the inspector-in-charge of Rajarhat police station in the North 24 Parganas. Mukul Mia, Inspector-in-Charge, Rabindranagar police station, Diamond Harbour Police District, has been transferred to Darjeeling. Meanwhile, West Bengal BJP calls for Hindu unity over Maheshtala incident. BJP State President Sukanta Majumdar said, "After Malda and Murshidabad incidents, Hindus are deliberately targeted in South 24 Parganas district also. A Tulsi tree and temple was asmita (sentiments) has been hurt in Maheshtala. Does Hindus don't have any sentiments?"

Vijayendra says Siddaramaiah, DKS are directly responsible for stampede that killed 11 people

Holding Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar directly responsible for the death of 11 people in the stampede during RCB's victory celebrations in Bengaluru on June 4, BJP State unit president B.Y. Vijayendra dared Mr. Siddaramaiah to an open debate on the tragic incident. Addressing a press conference at the party office here on Saturday, Mr. Vijayendra said that the Chief Minister is directly responsible for the stampede. Though police officials suggested postponing the celebrations, due to pressure from Mr. Siddaramaiah and Mr. Shivakumar the programme was organised the same day, Mr. Vijayendra said. He said that power struggle and competition between the two leaders [Mr. Siddaramaiah and Mr. Shivakumar] to gain political mileage from RCB's victory resulted in the tragic incident that claimed 11 lives. Mr. Vijayendra dared Mr. Siddaramaiah for an open debate on the Bengaluru stampede incident and also on the Congress-led government's performance in the last two years in the State. Highlighting the achievements of BJP-led government at the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's contributions in the last 11 years in office, Mr. Vijayendra said that under Modi's leadership, India has surged economically and technologically. It has been feulled by a series of landmark reforms and innovative initiatives, while the then UPA-led government was marred by several high-profile corruption scandals worth ₹12 lakh crore. 'The then Congress-led UPA government at the Centre emerged as a synonym of corruption,' he said. In the last 11 years, Mr. Modi has laid a strong foundation for a corruption-free India. Mr. Vijayendra said that there is no allegation of corruption against any Minister in the BJP-led government at the Centre while bribery is rampant in the Congress-led government in Karnataka. Replying to a question, Mr. Vijayendra said that the State government has set up an anti-communal task force to suppress Hindu activists and BJP workers.

"This is heinous crime...": Union MoS Sukanta Majumdar hits out at West Bengal Police over alleged raid at BJP office

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 15 (ANI): Union Minister of State for Education and Development of the North Eastern Region, Sukanta Majumdar, has condemned the alleged police raid at the BJP office in West Bengal's Bankura district, calling it a 'heinous crime.' Reiterating West Bengal Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari's allegations against the state police and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Union MoS Majumdar said, 'This is a heinous crime conducted by police. We are going to court and lodging an FIR against that officer. At midnight, they raided the BJP office and broke the lock. This is unacceptable.' 'BJP is the world's largest democratic party, and we will fight against this both legally and politically,' he told ANI. The row began when, sharing a video of the alleged raid on X, Suvendu Adhikari called the West Bengal police 'spineless' and 'partisan'. Adhikari wrote, 'The @WBPolice under the 'slippers' of Mamata Banerjee, have once again exposed their true colours as a spineless, partisan force that serves as a puppet of the ruling regime.' Narrating the incident, he added, 'Last night, at around 2 AM, Officers from Khatra and Bankura Police Stations descended upon the Bankura District BJP Party Office like thieves and dacoits, attempting to break the gate and barge in under the cover of darkness. This shameless display of so-called 'power' was met with fierce resistance from our brave BJP Karyakartas and local Leaders, who stood firm against this cowardly act of intimidation.' 'Is this what Mamata Police have been reduced to; sneaking around in the dead of night to harass opposition workers while turning a blind eye to the real criminals? Where is this bravado when it comes to taking action against TMC's notorious 'lumpen' Anubrata Mondal? This is the same Police force that cowers when faced with TMC goons and their lawless antics. Just weeks ago, an audio clip surfaced of Mondal hurling vile abuses and threats at Bolpur's Inspector-in-Charge, targeting his wife and mother with obscene remarks. Yet, what did the SPINELESS Police do? NOTHING,' the X post read. He alleged that CM Mamata Banerjee has surrendered to rioters, and instead of acting against the rioters, the state police took refuge in shops. 'One can't forget the SURRENDER gesture made by the Mamata Police in Maheshtala a couple of days earlier, waving a white handkerchief towards the stone pelting Jihadists. Bloody Cowards. During the recent anti-Hindu violence in Murshidabad, where mobs vandalised shops and homes, used crude bombs, and attacked Police vehicles, rather than cracking down on these miscreants, when faced with Jihadist rioters, the Mamata Police either took refuge in shops,' Adhikari posted. The X post further said, 'They have a history of hiding under tables, with files on their heads as cover, too afraid to act against those TMC Goons who invade the Police Stations. The people of Bengal deserve better than a Police force that flexes its muscle against the Opposition and commoners but turns tail when confronted by TMC's goons or other lawbreakers who are under the shelter of the TMC Party. This is not Law Enforcement, it's an act staged by Clowns, who have lost all respect from the People of West Bengal. I condemn this attempt to illegally enter the @BJP4Bengal Party Office at night without valid reasons and documents. Shame on you @WBPolice.' (ANI)
