Wall Street futures boosted by US-Japan trade deal
The pact will slash tariffs on Japanese autos from 27.5% to 15%, with duties on other goods dropping from 25% to 15%.
At 7:03 a.m. ET, S&P 500 E-minis were up 23.5 points, or 0.37%, Nasdaq 100 E-minis were up 34.5 points, or 0.15%, and Dow E-minis were up 202 points, or 0.45%.
Futures tracking the domestically focused Russell 2000 small-cap index (.RUT), opens new tab rose 1%.
Trump said that EU representatives are headed to the negotiating table on Wednesday, igniting hopes for a breakthrough deal with Europe. While the EU emphasized its commitment to a negotiated solution, it is also preparing countermeasures in case of a deadlock.
"Diminishing trade policy uncertainty is supporting risk assets. Nevertheless, several countries (notably the EU) face steeper tariff rates starting August 1 and higher levies pose a downside risk to U.S. growth and upside risk to inflation," Elias Haddad, senior markets strategist at Brown Brothers Harriman.
Meanwhile, the S&P 500 notched its eighth record close in a month on Tuesday, buoyed by easing trade tensions, a resilient U.S. economy, and upbeat second-quarter earnings.
The Dow climbed 0.4%, now within striking distance of its all-time high, while the Nasdaq slipped as declines in Meta and Microsoft weighed on the tech-heavy index.
Investors are now laser-focused on earnings from the "Magnificent Seven" — the market's star performers who have powered stocks to record highs.
Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab and Alphabet (GOOGL.O), opens new tab are set to report after the bell on Wednesday. With AI optimism running high and valuations stretched, expectations for these tech giants are sky-high, leaving little margin for disappointment. In premarket trading, both the stocks held steady.
In earnings-focused moves, Texas Instruments (TXN.O), opens new tab tumbled 11% after its quarterly profit forecast failed to impress investors, as it pointed to weaker-than-expected demand for its analog chips from some customers and underscored tariff-related uncertainty.
The earnings also weighed on its peer analog chipmakers, with Analog Devices (ADI.O), opens new tab, NXP Semiconductors (NXPI.O), opens new tab and ON Semiconductor (ON.O), opens new tab falling between 4 and 7%.
Automaker General Motors (GM.N), opens new tab also became a casualty of the trade war on Tuesday when it said Trump's tariffs took a $1.1 billion hit on its quarterly earnings, sending its shares down more than 8%.
Toymaker Hasbro (HAS.O), opens new tab rose 3.2% after raising its annual revenue forecast, while AT&T (T.N), opens new tab slipped 1.6% despite beating quarterly profit estimates.
In economic data, existing home sales numbers for June is due on the day. Thursday's weekly jobless claims numbers and S&P Global's flash PMI data will be closely assessed to gauge economic health in the wake of tariff uncertainties.
Following a mixed set of economic data last week, traders have ruled out an interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve next week. Odds for a September reduction stand at 56%, according to the CME FedWatch tool.

‘We didn't vote for Chat GPT': Swedish PM under fire for using AI in role
The Swedish prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, has come under fire after admitting that he regularly consults AI tools for a second opinion in his role running the country. Kristersson, whose Moderate party leads Sweden's centre-right coalition government, said he used tools including Chat GPT and the French service LeChat. His colleagues also used AI in their daily work, he said. Kristersson told the Swedish business newspaper Dagens industri: 'I use it myself quite often. If for nothing else than for a second opinion. What have others done? And should we think the complete opposite? Those types of questions.' Tech experts, however, have raised concerns about politicians using AI tools in such a way, and the Aftonbladet newspaper accused Kristersson in a editorial of having 'fallen for the oligarchs' AI psychosis'. 'You have to be very careful,' Simone Fischer-Hübner, a computer science researcher at Karlstad University, told Aftonbladet, warning against using Chat GPT to work with sensitive information. Kristersson's spokesperson, Tom Samuelsson, later said the prime minister did not take risks in his use of AI. 'Naturally it is not security sensitive information that ends up there. It is used more as a ballpark,' he said. But Virginia Dignum, a professor of responsible artificial intelligence at Umeå University, said AI was not capable of giving a meaningful opinion on political ideas, and that it simply reflects the views of those who built it. In-N-Out Burger's standings in the fast food industry keep sinking now that its Double-Double has slipped... again. The Double-Double's ranking dropped two places to number four on USA Today's list of best fast food burgers. The In-N-Out Burger offering made with two slices of cheese and beef patties along with onions, tomato, lettuce, and signature sauce finished behind Jack in the Box, A&W, and Habit Burger & Grill. Like last year, Habit Burger & Grill topped the list with its fan favorite Double Char, which comes with two hamburgers, onions, lettuce, tomato, and pickles. A&W and Jack in the Box were praised for its Papa Burger and Jumbo Jack Cheeseburger, coming in at number three and four respectively. Culver's rounded out the top 5 with its double ButterBurger with cheese after missing out on the list last year. Five Guys' cheeseburgers were kicked out of the top five this year even though it continues to be a popular offering. Shake Shack also created a massive shakeup by ranking seventh with its ShakeBurger, made with lettuce, tomato, cheese, and signature sauce. Freddy's Frozen Custard and Steakburgers' Original Double jumped into the list at number 8. Made with steakburger patties, cheese, onion, pickles, and mustard, the offering has been a longtime fan favorite order. Burger King managed to finish ninth in the ranking with its Whopper, even after experiencing a 1.3 percent drop in North American sales. However, its signature item continues to be popular, and may have helped now-shuttered restaurants rake in earnings. Whataburger finished the top 10 with its signature Double Meat Whataburger, made with never-frozen meat, tomato, lettuce, onions, pickles and mustard. Multiple chains in this year's ranking kicked out prominent brands like White Castle, Carl's Jr. and BurgerFi, a top brand that filed for bankruptcy last year. Multiple chains have had financial ups and downs this year, including Jack in the Box, which is planning to shutter between 150 and 200 locations. While In-N-Out has beaten the odds and expanded, CEO Lynsi Snyder sparked outrage after deciding to move the company to Tennessee.
