'Terminator' Target shooter tries to hijack truck 'after executing petrified girl, 4, whose grandpa he'd just killed'

Daily Mail16 hours ago
A crazed gunman tried to hijack a water truck minutes after gunning down a four-year-old girl and her grandpa outside a Target store
Ethan Blaine Nieneker, 32, was photographed by a passing motorist dramatically stealing the truck at a construction site in north Austin on Monday.
Leaning out of the cab, he balanced precariously on the step with one hand holding onto the door while the other clutched a handgun pointed at a worker.
Nieneker was wearing a Hawaiian shirt and fluorescent blue and yellow-patterned shorts in the photo as he tried to make a getaway on the Mopac Expressway.
Minutes earlier he allegedly shot dead Adam Chow, 65, and his granddaughter Astrid, 4, along with Target worker Hector Leopoldo Martinez Machuca, 24.
Adam was shot first as he sat in the driver's seat, as Astrid watched.
Nieneker is then accused of turning his weapon towards Astrid, shooting the little girl at point blank range as she sat in the back seat of her grandpa's car.
The shooter did not know either of his victims, investigators say.
After shoving Chow's wife Doris, 66, out of the family's grey Toyota 4-Runner, he took off away from the store before trying to switch cars to the water truck.
Stricken Doris pulled Astrid from the car in a bid to find help that could save her, but the youngster succumbed to her injuries shortly after.
He allegedly attacked the driver and tried pulling him out of the truck, but wasn't able to, instead chasing the truck driver away with his pistol before returning to the Toyota.
Chow's family said Astrid was deeply loved by her family, teachers, classmates, friends, and 'all who had the privilege of knowing her'.
'Sweet Astrid brought joy, laughter, and light to everyone she touched,' they said.
'Adam Chow, was a loving husband to Doris, beloved father to Monica and Sophia, and a doting grandfather. He dedicated his life to loving God and loving others.'
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis alleged at a press conference that Nieneker first 'randomly' shot Machuca about 2.15pm as he collected trolleys.
Austin homicide detective Nathan Sexton said Nieneker chose his victims 'completely randomly' and used a handgun given to him by a family member.
'He said that he was Jesus and there was no real reason whatsoever given,' he said.
After his aborted attempt to steal the truck, he crashed into a Volkswagen about 2.25pm, then allegedly attacked and carjacked the Volkswagen driver.
Nieneker only drove that car until 2.34pm when he tried to steal a self-driving Waymo car, but failed and got back in the Volkswagen.
Minutes later, a church acquaintance of Nieneker claimed a brick came flying through the window of his house on La Casa Drive after the gunman threw it.
Nieneker's alleged rampage continued until 2.58pm when he was spotted walking naked through a backyard down the street from the one he bricked.
He was seen running into a 'porta potty', then running away again before police found him, still nude and holding a Bible, and demanded he surrender.
When he refused, police fired their tasers and he was arrested at 3.06pm.
'The investigation shows that Nieneker conducted these violent offenses of shooting at multiple victims, killing three victims, and destroying multiple vehicles, in the span of less than one hour,' police said.
Chow was pronounced dead at the scene at 2.39pm and his granddaughter at 2.50pm. Doris only suffered minor injuries.
Nieneker was charged with two counts of capital murder for Chow and his granddaughter first-degree felony murder of Machuca.
His booking photo at the Travis County Jail showed him staring straight at the camera with several fresh cuts on his face.
Sexton said Nieneker gave no motive for the shooting and his state of mind at the time was still being investigated.
'We're still looking into the drug portion of it. He could have been under the influence of narcotics, it might not necessarily be all attributed to mental illness, so we're still investigating all of that,' he said.
Davis admitted there were failures by authorities to follow up on mental health callouts, which may have prevented the shooting.
'This man had some serious issues, and I think about the systems that failed... there were some serious failures here,' she said.
Nieneker had two emergency mental health detentions of up to 72 hours in 2018, but was not committed either time.
How Nieneker got the gun, which he left in Chow's car, from a relative is being investigated, and could lead to charges against his family.
'Where does someone with this capacity to do this get a weapon and when does a family members feel comfortable giving someone with these issues a weapon?' Davis said.
Nieneker lived alone and worked at a nearby restaurant, police said.
Davis said police received calls about the shooting 15 minutes after it began and rushed to the scene within four minutes.
Social media photos of Nieneker showed him grinning with friends at social events, posing while wearing a Covid-style mask by a trash bin, and posing beside a fireplace.
Another Facebook image showed the alleged gunman holding a large brown leaf in front of his face and creepily peering over it, and a fifth photo had Nieneker wearing an American flag as a bandana.
Davis told reporters on Monday evening that Nieneker has a history of mental illness and a prior criminal history on charges including drugs and assault.

Trump's nominee for Bureau of Labor Statistics was Jan 6 ‘bystander' outside Capitol, says White House

Donald Trump 's pick to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics was a 'bystander' outside the Capitol as the Jan. 6 insurrection unfolded, according to the White House. The president on Monday nominated Dr. E.J. Antoni to lead the BLS after firing the agency's commissioner earlier this month, accusing her of manipulating jobs data. In recent days, videos have emerged of the 37-year-old economist from the right-wing Heritage Foundation think tank among a mob of Trump supporters who swarmed the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Antoni is not believed to be among those who entered the building, and the video does not show him crossing barricades or demonstrating. The footage places Antoni at the Capitol about an hour after rioters tore down police barricades, as other insurrectionists poured onto its grounds. In U.S. Capitol Police surveillance video unearthed by NBC News, Antoni was spotted outside the Capitol building among a sea of supporters waving 'Stop the Steal' and 'Trump 2020' flags. In the clip, Antoni is seen walking away from the crowd on the building's west side as chants of 'USA' ring out and tear gas plumes in the background. Far-right radio host Alex Jones can be heard speaking over a megaphone. Other footage shows Antoni at the Capitol's east side, walking away from the building, according to NBC News. The video was initially released by the GOP-led House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight and archived from the social media website Parler. A White House official told NBC News Wednesday that Antoni was in Washington, D.C. for in-person meetings with his then employer, which, according to his LinkedIn profile, was the conservative think tank, the Committee to Unleash Prosperity. 'These pictures show EJ Antoni, a bystander to the events of January 6th, observing and then leaving the Capitol area,' White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers told the broadcaster in an email statement. He added it was 'wrong and defamatory to suggest EJ engaged in anything inappropriate or illegal.' While Antoni has not been accused of any wrongdoing, more than 1,500 rioters were charged with crimes connected to the attack on the Capitol building. On his first day back in office on January 20, Trump granted clemency to almost all of the defendants. Trump announced his intentions to install Antoni as BLS commissioner after removing Erika McEntarfer, whom he accused of using 'phony' numbers in the July jobs report that showed private companies adding just 73,000 positions, below projections. Under Antoni's stewardship, Trump wrote on Truth Social Monday that the numbers released would be 'HONEST and ACCURATE.' Antoni, who will face Senate confirmation, wrote on X last week that the bureau, part of the Labor Department, needed to revise its methods to 'rebuild the trust that has been lost over the last several years.' However, his nomination has intensified fears among critics that Trump wants a partisan supporter at the helm of a bureau to manipulate data to support his policies. Antoni was a contributor to the group's Project 2025, a controversial blueprint document outlining many of the moves the Trump administration has taken in office.

Teen arrested after ‘attacking female tourists in their hotels' on hols island as chilling pics show blood-stained rooms

A TEENAGER has been arrested after two tourists were attacked in their hotel rooms on the Canary Island Fuerteventura. A youngster has been accused of seriously wounding the women in separate assaults on the island, which left blood smeared around the rooms. 5 5 5 Detectives released graphic photos showing bed sheets drenched in blood and puddles on the floor. They said the victims were staying at separate hotels in the resort of Costa Calma, known for its beautiful child-friendly family beach. One of the victims was hospitalised with injuries to her head, hands and arms. Neither of their nationalities have been released. The two brutal attacks happened seven months apart, in December and June, but similarities between them led cops to make a link. CCTV footage of a figure sprinting away from one of the hotels was released alongside the pictures, and police say they used this to help them identify the suspect along with clothes and a mobile they seized. The suspect was arrested a month after the second assault and has been described as a minor - but his exact age not released. He has been remanded to a youth detention centre by a judge pending an ongoing criminal investigation. Police have not yet offered any information about what they think motivated the attacks. Confirming the arrest as part of Operation Praktiker, a spokesman for the Civil Guard said: 'The Civil Guard in Fuerteventura has arrested a minor as the alleged perpetrator of two crimes of serious wounding in Costa Calma in the municipality of Pajara. Devil's Den 'murderer' sparks serial killer fears as he's investigated for 2nd unsolved death with eerie 'satanic' link 'The victims are two women who were staying at hotels in the area. 'The investigation began as the result of an assault on a woman on June 23 this year. 'The victim was attacked inside her hotel room, suffering serious injuries to her head, hands and arms. 'She had to be rushed to Fuerteventura General Hospital to receive emergency medical attention. 'This incident generated great social alarm, intensified by messages the victim subsequently published on social media. 5 'Officers began by analysing images from CCTV in the area. 'They checked information with workers in nearby hotels, people who had been staying in the hotels around the dates under investigation and local residents and employees of nearby business premises, making background checks and verifying possible links with similar incidents. 'The analysis of the images enabled investigators to relate the June assault with another similar incident which occurred on December 16 last year, in which another woman was attacked in her hotel room, also in Costa Calma and very near to the scene of the second assault. 'In both cases a similar modus operandi was used. 'After comparing the security camera recordings, investigators concluded the same person had entered both rooms and caused the serious injuries the women inside suffered.' The arrest was made on July 18, although details of the case have only just been made public. The Civil Guard spokesman said: 'The arrest occurred after a court-ordered search of the suspect's home. 'Clothes he allegedly wore the night of the assaults were recovered as well as different objects possibly linked to the physical attacks. 'Mobile phones were also confiscated so they could be analysed. 'The youngster has been remanded to the Tabares Juvenile Centre in Tenerife."

State of emergency declared in New Mexico following rise in crime and drug use

New Mexico 's Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared a state of emergency across a significant portion of the state's northern region, citing a surge in violent crime and drug trafficking. The declaration, issued on Wednesday, makes $750,000 available to local governments and tribal communities grappling with the crisis. The emergency measures target Rio Arriba County, an expansive area stretching from Española to the Colorado state line, which includes two Native American pueblo communities. Local authorities and tribal officials in the county had called for state reinforcements to combat the escalating crime and hardships linked to illicit drug use. This region has long been plagued by opioid addiction and high rates of drug-overdose deaths, with homeless encampments becoming increasingly visible in populated areas in recent years. Governor Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, underscored the severity of the situation in a statement: "The surge in criminal activity has contributed to increased homelessness, family instability and fatal drug overdoses, placing extraordinary strain on local governments and police departments that have requested immediate state assistance". This latest declaration follows similar actions taken by Governor Lujan Grisham in New Mexico 's largest city, Albuquerque. In April, she declared a state of emergency there due to a significant rise in crime, prompting the deployment of the New Mexico National Guard. Earlier in 2023, she suspended the right to carry guns in public parks and playgrounds in Albuquerque, a move made in response to a series of shootings across the state that resulted in child fatalities. Earlier, in 2023, she suspended the right to carry guns at public parks and playgrounds in Albuquerque in response to a series of shootings around the state that left children dead. There were no immediate calls for troop deployments in Rio Arriba County, though the new emergency declaration allows for authorities to call up the National Guard. Emergency funds will help local law enforcement agencies spend on overtime, equipment and coordinated police responses, said Lujan Grisham spokesperson Jodi McGinnis Porter. The tribal governor of Santa Clara Pueblo on the edge of Española urged the state to address a growing public safety crisis stemming from the use and abuse of fentanyl and alcohol in the community at large. 'The pueblo has expended thousands of dollars trying to address this crisis (...) and to protect pueblo children who are directly and negatively affected by a parent's or guardian's addiction,' said Santa Clara Governor James Naranjo in a July letter to Lujan Grisham. 'But we are not an isolated community and the causes and effects of fentanyl/alcohol abuse, increased crime, and increased homelessness extend to the wider community.' Recent deaths in the region linked by medical investigators to fentanyl and alcohol use include Rio Arriba County Sheriff Billy Merrifield. In 2020, President Donald Trump sent federal agents, including Homeland Security officers, to Albuquerque as part of an effort to contain violent crime. Separately on Wednesday, the Albuquerque Police Department announced murder charges against three teenagers — including two juveniles — in the July 2 shooting death of a homeless man in Albuquerque who was chased from a bus stop in the predawn hours. A 15-year-old boy is accused of being the shooter in the killing of 45-year-old Frank Howard, police department spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos said.
