Anwar urges peace talks amid Thailand-Cambodia border clash
Anwar expressed concern over the escalating conflict, stating, 'They're important members of ASEAN; they're very close to Malaysia, and I have been messaging both the Prime Ministers. The least we can expect is for them to stand down, and hopefully to try and enter into negotiations.'
He emphasised that peace remains the only viable option, adding, 'They have tried, but I still think peace is the only option available.' Anwar made these comments after delivering his keynote address at the ASEAN Semiconductor Summit 2025 (ASEMIS) in Petaling Jaya.
The Prime Minister revealed he had previously engaged in discussions with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's now-suspended leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra last month. He expressed willingness to facilitate further talks to de-escalate tensions.
Thailand's political landscape has added complexity to the situation, with former defence chief Phumtham Wechayachai serving as acting Prime Minister following Paetongtarn's suspension over an ethics probe.
When questioned about potential trade disruptions, Anwar dismissed premature concerns, stating, 'I think it's temporary. Both have their countries' interests at heart. Both want a peaceful resolution of the conflict, and both want to keep ASEAN engaged.'
The border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia dates back decades, with an 817-km undemarcated boundary remaining a persistent source of friction. Recent clashes began on May 28, escalating after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a shootout.
Tensions worsened this week as Thailand downgraded diplomatic ties following an alleged landmine explosion injuring a Thai soldier. Cambodia retaliated by reducing its diplomatic relations to the lowest level.
Thursday's clash reportedly left a Thai civilian dead and three others, including a child, seriously injured.
As ASEAN Chair for 2025, Malaysia is positioned to mediate, with Anwar reaffirming the bloc's commitment to stability. - Bernama

THE proposal to raise the retirement age to 65 should be limited only to specific sectors that require expertise and intellectual skills, according to economist Dr Ahmed Razman Abdul Latiff. Ahmed Razman, who is from Universiti Putra Malaysia's Putra Business School, said the move should not be implemented across the board, as there are sectors that require physical strength, which may burden workers as they age. 'Sectors such as education, administration or consultancy are more suitable for considering a higher retirement age as they rely on experience and critical thinking. But for jobs requiring physical labour, it may not be practical,' he told Bernama on Thursday (Aug 7). Yesterday, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar announced that the Public Service Department will carry out a comprehensive study on the proposal to raise the mandatory retirement age for civil servants to 65. He said the proposal is still at a preliminary stage and requires in-depth scrutiny before any decision is made. Ahmed Razman said the retirement age issue requires careful consideration as Employees Provident Fund statistics revealed that the majority of contributors from the private sector do not have sufficient savings for retirement. He noted that any increase in the retirement age must be implemented as part of a multi-pronged strategy, including strengthening social protection, utilising wakaf (endowment) assets and introducing the concept of a time bank to address the challenges of caring for an ageing population as Malaysia is expected to become an aged nation by 2043. He explained that a time bank allows individuals to contribute time and effort while they are young, which can later be credited and redeemed as care services in old age, thereby reducing care costs and easing the government's fiscal burden. Previously, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when tabling the 13th Malaysia Plan in the Dewan Rakyat on July 31, stated that the mandatory retirement age will be reviewed in line with Malaysia's transition towards an aged nation. The review will involve various aspects, including financial implications and the impact on job opportunities, which must be considered before a final decision is made. In May, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said also proposed raising the mandatory retirement age from 60 to 65, arguing that individuals at that age remain healthy and can continue contributing productively to the national workforce. PM hopes new OCM HQ will spur country to win first Olympic gold

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) headquarters in Bukit Jalil, Anwar said he hopes the development of the new facility will spur the country to get its first Olympic gold medal in Los Angeles. Anwar said the government has been supporting sports in the country through efforts from Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, as well as OCM president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria. "I think the government, through the Youth and Sports Ministry, has been very proactive and supportive. You have a good minister who has been harassing me for more money and more funds "With Hannah and Norza, everyone is now waiting and we expect one gold medal at least, otherwise they'll be in trouble," said Anwar in jest at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday. Anwar added that the new headquarters comes as a need to provide the 58 National Sports Associations (NSA) a place to gather and share knowledge to further enhance sports performance. Expected to cost RM103mil in total, the new Olympic House will be constructed in Bukit Jalil within the Kuala Lumpur Sports City, with the new building located next to the National Hockey Stadium. Norza had previously said that the main building is targeted to be done before the 2027 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games, but Anwar hopes the project can be completed ahead of its intended schedule. Meanwhile, Anwar also stressed the importance of sportsmanship, stressing that there is no room for hooliganism in sports at any level, particularly in football. "As I always tell my grandchildren in any sports they are involved in, especially when they get upset, that it's not the spirit. "You must try and excel to win, but must accept the fact that the best athlete will win and that's the spirit of sportsmanship. "That is why we take any issue of hooliganism or violence in sports seriously, particularly in football in this country. Everyone supports their team or their state, but that does not allow them to create chaos," he said. The new Olympic House is inspired by the one in Lausanne, Switzerland, and will replace OCM's current base at Jalan Hang Jebat.
