KTR serves defamation notice to Bandi Sanjay for remarks accusing his involvement in phone tapping; demands apology in a week

The Hindua day ago
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president and Sircilla MLA, K. T. Rama Rao (KTR), served a legal notice to Union Minister of State for Home, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, demanding an unconditional apology for what he termed as 'false, defamatory and slanderous' remarks accusing the MLA of indulging in phone tapping using the police.
The notice, issued by KTR's legal counsel, alleges that Mr. Kumar accused him of misusing the Special Intelligence Branch (SIB) for large-scale phone tapping during his tenure as Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development, Industries and IT in the previous BRS government.
The allegations made at a press conference on August 8, 2025, reportedly included the claims that thousands of phones, including those of political leaders, a High Court judge, the current Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, and even members of former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao's family were tapped for personal and political purposes.
The legal notice also mentioned that the Union Minister accused KTR of misusing phone tapping for personal and political purposes. It added Mr. Kumar alleged that individuals were falsely linked to Maoists to justify surveillance, private conversations between spouses were monitored and general public avoided regular calls, preferring encrypted apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Signal due to fear.
KTR, in the notice, said the accusations were 'malicious and vindictive,' and made 'without any basis or proof whatsoever', and with 'mala fide intention' to tarnish his image and goodwill.
The BRS leader, who represents the Sircilla constituency, said the statements had caused him 'considerable embarrassment and loss of reputation' both in India and abroad, with friends and family expressing concern after the remarks were widely circulated by television channels and on social media.
The notice demanded an unconditional public apology from Mr. Kumar within seven days and to refrain from making further defamatory comments. Or else, KTR would initiate both civil and criminal proceedings, holding the Union Minister responsible for all consequences.
KTR's legal team also accused the Union Minister of 'distorting facts and misleading the public' to advance his political agenda, asserting that such conduct was 'unexpected of a Minister of State for Home Affairs.'
Before sending the legal notice on Tuesday (August 12, 2025), KTR rejected the allegations on the same day the allegations were made, and also warned that a defamatory notice would be served to Mr. Kumar if he didn't apologise.

Panchayat leaders from 28 states, UTs to attend Independence Day celebrations as special guests

The panchayati raj ministry will host 210 panchayat representatives from 28 states and Union territories as special guests for the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort in New Delhi on 15 August. This comes as India sticks to its stand of protecting farmers in trade talks with the US. According to a press statement from the panchayati raj ministry, the panchayat representatives will be accompanied by their spouses and nodal officers, and 425 participants are expected to attend. This year's special guests include a significant number of women panchayat leaders who have brought visible improvements in their gram panchayats, like better infrastructure, enhanced public services and inclusive community initiatives. The women leaders have achieved significant success in saturating flagship government schemes such as Har Ghar Jal Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana—Gramin and Mission Indradhanush while also encouraging innovative local initiatives and solutions at the grassroots, stated the release. The government release stated that the elected women representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions exemplify the emerging strength of rural leadership, successfully combining their governance responsibilities with forward-looking development approaches across diverse regions of the country. Meanwhile, a formal felicitation programme for the special guests will be held on 14 August in New Delhi. The felicitation ceremony will include the launch of the artificial intelligence-powered SabhaSaar application, a digital tool to promote transparency, accountability, and public participation in local governance, specifically at the gram panchayat level, and the release of the 16th issue of the Gramoday Sankalp magazine. The SabhaSaar app leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to generate structured Minutes of Meeting (MoM) from gram sabha videos and audio recordings. Earlier, the minutes were transcribed manually. So, citizens can access the MoM and decisions taken by their panchayat members. Minister of panchayati raj (MoPR) Rajiv Ranjan Singh and minister of state for panchayati raj Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel will attend the function. Additionally, MoPR secretary Vivek Bharadwaj and other senior ministry officials will also be present on the occasion. The theme for this year's programme, 'Atmanirbhar Panchayat, Vikshit Bharat Ki Pehchaan', captures the vision of self-reliant panchayats as a pillar of developed India.

SC cancels bail to wrestler Sushil Kumar in Sagar Dhankar murder case

New Delhi, Aug 13 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday set aside the Delhi High Court's March 4 order granting bail to Olympic medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar, the prime accused in the 2021 murder of junior national champion Sagar Dhankar. A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Karol and Prashant Kumar Mishra allowed the plea filed by the victim's father, Ashok Dhankad, challenging the High Court's decision, and directed Kumar to surrender within one week. Senior advocate Siddharth Mridul appeared for the petitioner, while senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani represented Kumar. Kumar, along with several others, is accused of brutally assaulting Dhankar and his friends Sonu and Amit Kumar in the parking lot of Delhi's Chhatrasal Stadium on May 4, 2021, allegedly over a property dispute. Dhankar, 23, died from cerebral injury caused by blunt force trauma, while the others sustained serious injuries. The incident led to a high-profile manhunt for Kumar, who evaded arrest for 18 days before being apprehended by Delhi Police in Mundka on May 23, 2021. Following his arrest, Kumar was suspended from his Railways job and remained in judicial custody until the High Court granted him bail earlier this year. The Supreme Court, however, found merit in the victim's family's argument that the trial was ongoing in a serious offence involving murder and set aside the bail. The High Court had earlier noted that Kumar had spent over three and a half years in custody, granting bail on a bond of ₹50,000 with two sureties of the same amount. Advocates for Kumar had also pointed to the slow pace of the trial, with only 30 out of 186 witnesses examined over three years. In July 2023, Kumar was granted a week-long interim bail on medical grounds for surgery on a torn ligament near his right knee. Earlier, in October 2022, the Rohini District Court framed charges against Kumar and 17 others under IPC Section 302 (murder) and related offences, including rioting, criminal conspiracy, and attempted murder, in connection with the killing and injuries caused during the Chhatrasal Stadium incident. With Wednesday's order, Kumar will have to return to custody while the trial continues. UNI SNG PRS
