Jio Q1: Brokerages spotlight strong net adds, FWA-led broadband gains; say APRU lift modest

Time of India7 days ago
New Delhi:
Reliance Jio
turned in Q1 report card of robust subscriber addition and 5G user tally with strong traction seen in home broadband segment, though growth in
average revenue per user
was modest, according to analysts.
The big takeaways from the April-June quarter numbers for them were better-than-expected revenue growth, a sharp rise in net adds to about 10 million post-tariff-hike digestion, and 5G users surpassing 210 million.
"Overall, healthy results with strong subscriber addition and EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation) expansion, despite flattish ARPUs," UBS said in its report.
On 5G, Jio is the largest operator globally in terms of data traffic, UBS said, citing the subscriber base of 210 plus million users.
"AirFiber continues to see strong demand and is the largest FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) service globally with 82% market share in India and a subscriber base of 7.4 million," it said.
In Q1FY26, Jio added 2.6 million home subscribers (1.8 million using FWA) with fixed broadband base now reaching 20 million (7.4 million from AirFiber), it further pointed out.
JP Morgan said that the revenue was up a "stronger-than-expected" 3% sequentially led by 1.2% growth in ARPU, addition of 7.3 million wireless subscribers and 2.6 million fixed subscribers in the quarter.
For Jio, Q1 (April-June) was a robust quarter with strong net adds and "modest" ARPU (average revenue per user) growth, it said.
Citing Jio's ARPU rise of 1.2% quarter on quarter to ₹209, it observed, the increase was a partial flow-through of tariff hikes that should end this quarter.
"Jio has historically taken the longest to show the full impact of tariff increases due to a high proportion of users on 3m/6m/annual plans that have queued multiple periods of plans," JP Morgan note said.
Notably, Jefferies has raised its FY25-27 subscriber estimates by up to two% to pick up mobile subscribers as well as higher FWA subscribers. It expects RJio's mobile subscribers to reach 517 million and home broadband subscribers to reach 38 million by Mar-27.
"Reliance Jio's 1Q results missed estimates due to lower-than-expected ARPUs and higher depreciation and interest costs. Subscriber additions and margins surprised positively and should support revenue and earnings growth in the coming quarters," the Jefferies report said.
Jio Platforms - the entity that houses Reliance Industries' telecom and digital businesses - on Friday reported a net profit of ₹7,110 crore for the June quarter, a nearly 25% rise over the year-ago period, its numbers bolstered by customer adds, improved realisations per user and data traffic growth.
Revenue from operations jumped 19% to ₹35,032 crore, driven by strong subscriber momentum across mobility and homes, increased customer engagement and growth in the digital services business, according to the earnings statement by parent Reliance Industries.
Quarterly Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization or EBITDA at ₹18,135 crore was up 23.9% year-on-year. Average Revenue Per User - a key vector - increased to ₹208.8 against ₹206.2 in the March quarter and ₹181.7 in the June quarter of FY25.
Reliance Jio Infocomm - the telecom unit - posted a 23.2% increase in net profit at ₹6,711 crore in Q1FY26, while revenue from operations grew 16.6% to ₹30,882 crore. PTI

Jio Platforms deploys 10 live 5G network slices nationwide for various use cases

NEW DELHI: Jio Platforms (JPL) has deployed 10 network slices on its homegrown fifth-generation ( 5G ) standalone (SA) Core to power various use cases, its senior vice president Aayush Bhatnagar said on Monday. 'Network slicing is no longer just a concept — it's live, nationwide, and powering real-world applications. With Jio Platforms' robust 5G SA Core and Network Slicing Platform (NSP), 10 active network slices are now in production, optimised for scale, performance, and reliability,' Bhatnagar said in a post on professional social networking platform LinkedIn. These 5G network slices, he said, are purpose-built for enterprise, the Internet of Things (IoT), gaming, Jio's fixed wireless access (FWA) service JioAirFiber, and mission-critical services. 'Production-grade and battle-tested for real-world traffic,' the top executive said, adding that network slices will deliver service level agreement (SLA)-driven 5G experiences to customers. Reliance Jio Infocomm , the country's top telecom operator, comprises the bulk of JPL's operations. Network slicing is a new service enabled by 5G SA networks. It allows telecom carriers to create multiple virtual network slices that operate across the same physical network. Each slice is isolated from other network traffic to give dedicated performance and eliminate the risk of network congestion, with the features of the slice tailored to the use case requirements. Network slicing is seen as a major application of the latest-generation networks, enabling telcos to create differentiated revenue streams across multiple industry verticals. Globally, telcos are either trialling the technology with their equipment vendor partners, or have deployed it for certain scenarios. Jio, in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2026 (Q1FY26), crossed the 200 million 5G subscribers milestone and 20 million home connections. ' Jio AirFiber is now the largest FWA (fixed wireless access) service provider in the world, with a base of 7.4 million subscribers,' said Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director, Reliance Industries, the parent of JPL, in the April-June 2025 quarter results statement of FY26.

Starlink to have 2 mn customers in India, offer 200 mbps speed: MoS Telecom

Union Minister Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar has said that satellite internet provider Starlink, led by billionaire Elon Musk, will only be allowed up to two million connections in India. Speaking after a review meeting with BSNL, the Minister of State for Telecom downplayed concerns that Starlink could pose a threat to state-run BSNL or other telecom operators. "Starlink can have only 2 million customers in India and offer up to 200 mbps speed. That won't affect telecom services," the minister said, according to a report by the Press Trust of India. Starlink and other satellite communication (satcom) services are expected to cater mainly to rural and remote areas -- regions where BSNL already has a strong presence. According to the minister, the cost of installing and using satcom services will be quite high. He added that monthly charges could be around ₹3,000, making it a costly option for many. Speaking on BSNL's progress, the minister confirmed that the rollout of BSNL's 4G services is now complete. He also clarified that the company does not plan to increase its tariffs for now. "We want the market first. There are no tariff hikes planned," he added. Starlink to be 3rd satellite provider in India Earlier this month, Starlink received the final licence it needed from India's space regulator -- the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) -- to begin its commercial operations. This clears the last regulatory barrier for the satellite provider to enter the Indian market. With the approval, Starlink became the third satellite provider to gain permission to offer services in India. The government has already cleared Eutelsat's OneWeb and Reliance Jio's applications. However, Starlink still needs to get spectrum from the government, build ground infrastructure, and prove through testing that it meets India's security standards. Business Standard had earlier reported that Starlink's pricing in India will reflect local conditions and global cost models. The equipment kit is expected to cost about ₹33,000, while monthly service charges will likely fall between ₹3,000 and ₹4,200. These prices are similar to what the company has offered in Bangladesh and Bhutan, where it recently began operations. Starlink will sell its kits through telecom partners Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, both of which signed distribution deals with the company in April.
