
The Joy of Reading One Poem in Many Different Translations
One of my favorite pages on the internet contains eight back-to-back translations of 'Au Lecteur,' the first poem in Charles Baudelaire's 'Les Fleurs du Mal,' all in English. I have visited this page many times to compare the different versions of the last stanza. Initially, I was shocked that each rendition of the last line ('— Hypocrite lecteur, — mon semblable, — mon frère!') is unique. Most end with the phrase 'my brother,' but 'mon semblable' generates more variation: my fellow, my twin (several times), my likeness, my like, fellowman, my double.
That last interpretation, which I like for its echo of the French word, comes from Robert Lowell's translation. Lowell also makes the choice that most delights me on the page, translating 'C'est l'Ennui!' not as 'He is Ennui!' (William Aggeler) or 'It is boredom!' (Wallace Fowlie) but as, surprise, 'It's BOREDOM.' The caps transpose all that emphatic energy from the exclamation point onto the word itself, a move with the casual flair of genius, yet faithful to the original. I'm not sure the choice would have struck me as much if I hadn't read it next to seven others.
I once heard someone quote the end of Rilke's 'Portrait of My Father as a Young Man,' in Stephen Mitchell's translation ('Oh quickly disappearing photograph/in my more slowly disappearing hand'). I found those lines so moving I was nervous it would show. Years later I read Edward Snow's translation: 'O you swiftly fading daguerreotype/in my more slowly fading hands.' I vastly preferred the Mitchell — much more natural and immediate, and 'fade' seems so weak, in reference to one's body, one's existence, next to 'disappear.'
This liking it less taught me something profound, not just about translations, but about words, and choices, in general. I love this feature of great poetry in other languages, the way it spins out mutations. I love to see how different minds find (hugely or minutely) different solutions to the same set of problems. An array of translations is decision porn.
The Peruvian poet César Vallejo (1892-1938), like Rilke and Baudelaire, attracts many translators, as Margaret Jull Costa notes in the introduction to her new translations, THE ETERNAL DICE: Selected Poems (New Directions, 144 pp., paperback, $16.95). This is because 'translators are naturally, and possibly masochistically,' she writes, 'drawn to the difficult.'
I suspect poetry is always hard to translate, but if Vallejo is especially so, it's because of his linguistic ingenuity, an innovative style that adheres to a complex worldview. When you're reading Vallejo, it may seem the rules of grammar don't obtain, but nor do the laws of physics — the self of his poetry is godlike, outside time, and anything is also its own opposite. These are poems about the constancy of suffering, as in 'I'm Going to Talk About Hope' ('My pain is so deep, that it has neither cause nor absence of cause') and 'The Nine Monsters' ('Never … has health/been more deadly,/nor has migraine extracted so much forehead from the forehead!'). They speak to the death always present in life, the dying of living.

Coach Resort 2026 Collection
Before we get to Stuart Vevers's very—very—good resort collection for Coach (or winter, in the brand parlance) here's something he shared at the preview about where it all started. As a kid, he and his brother would go to theater shows in his native Carlisle in the U.K. where his grandparents would not only perform, but also be decked out in costumes of his granny's design and making. The Vevers kids would get dressed up too, like, for instance, wearing sailor suits when one year the show's theme was South Pacific. Years later, his grandmother would help Vevers make clothing to go out in, helping him sew the likes of PVC trousers so he could shake a tail feather. Flash forward some decades later and this latest Coach collection speaks to those formative years of his. It has a spirit of almost childlike naivete spliced with his usual unerring sense of what feels right for now. Vevers has mixed up, without much if any regard to gender, sparkly tulle tutus, washed and worn sweatshirts emblazoned with the visage of Disney hound Pluto, and cheery Peter Pan-collared sweaters which grandma could have knitted, with weathered and worn biker and aviator leathers, capes in tiger stripe fake fur or bejewelled chiffon, and yet more of the upcycled patch-worked jeans which have become a Coach thing, this time in soft black washed denim. 'It's a celebration of the joy of dressing up,' Vevers said, 'and it's what led me to use these personal references to my past. There's a bit of fantasy to it all too—I see that with the way my kids will get dressed up when they're playing—but here that's grounded with this tougher idea of Americana.' What all of this brings together, even the collection's leather bunny ears, crowns, and swords (his kids are going to have a field day when they get their mitts on them) is the warm familiar glow of familial nostalgia, and an unerring sense of the moment that is, in essence, what his Coach is about. It's also refreshingly uncynical, which might be its greatest attribute, when it's all too easy to be cynical about so much that's going on, particularly—especially—in fashion. (This joyful, life-affirming collection even warmed the heart of this old cynic.)

White shirts. Black ties. Bald caps. Pitbull's fans party like clones worldwide
LONDON (AP) — Londoners have reported thousands of sightings of Pitbull this week. With that bald head, goatee and suit, he's pretty hard to miss. On closer inspection, though, it becomes clear that Mr. Worldwide is not actually everywhere all at once — in his stead, those are clones swarming London, on their way to the O2 Arena to see him onstage. That goatee? Drawn on. That bare head? Bald caps, in lieu of a dramatic shave. More than two decades into his career, the Miami superstar whose hits — from 'Hotel Room Service' to 'Timber' and 'Give Me Everything' to 'El Taxi' — have become permanent playlist staples of weddings, bar mitzvahs and, yes, the club is stoking a growing fan frenzy in the U.K. and beyond. He started noticing the odd look-alike or two at concerts back in 2021, emerging from the pandemic-era lockdowns. 'Maybe out of 20,000 people coming to the show, 30,000 coming to show, you'll see a thousand,' he says of what happened next. But that's before he hit the U.K. 'We jumped the pond and we ended up in London and it was just something else. It was definitely a whole new movement, took it to a whole new level,' Pitbull told The Associated Press, the day after Monday's show in London. The phenomenon is something that has rapidly grown from a minority to the majority — or from a negative to a positive, as Pitbull is known to say. Unlike the celebrity look-alike contests that reward uncanny resemblance to the likes of Timothée Chalamet,Glen Powell or even Ernest Hemingway, it's less about the ability to grow the right facial hair and more about the vibe. After all, the vast majority of those dressed up at Monday's concert were women. (Pitbelles, one could say.) These wannabe clones were spotted on the underground to North Greenwich, where they proceeded to dance outside the arena to a live DJ set for hours before the show even started. Photos were taken in front of a giant poster of Pitbull and goatees were carefully colored in on friends' faces before, finally, the sunglasses went on. Rebecca Petrie and Jamie Lee Hart spent hours online to get tickets, traveling from Scotland for the gig. They suggested that girls are more drawn to dressing up than guys. 'Women are more brave,' Hart said. And Pitbull appreciates that. 'To have more women in the crowd, it just goes to show you that they are feeling what the most powerful woman in my life has taught me on stage,' he says, referencing his mother, 'which is a gentleman that knows how to have a good time. Sometimes a little naughty, sometimes a little nice, but more than anything a good person that will do the right thing to the best of my ability.' Videos from Pitbull's London show in February flooded social media with a decent number of look-alikes vibing out to tracks like 'On the Floor' and 'Fireball.' When additional June shows for his 'Party After Dark' tour went on sale, ticket buyers got the memo: Dress up or stand out as one of the few who didn't. Indeed, the floor of the arena on Monday looked like a sea of baked beans, courtesy the bald caps, while the stands looked like the destination of an unlikely school trip, with rows after rows of white shirts and black ties askew. 'If you're going to go to a Pitbull concert you need to really feel his energy and you can't do that without a bald cap and a suit,' attendee Keeley James Elliot said, while posing with Mr. Worldwide-inspired inflated globes outside the venue. Expect similar scenes at his upcoming Europe dates, as he winds his way through Paris, Prague and Poland. He'll jaunt back to the U.S. for dates in South Dakota, Las Vegas and a stop at the Iowa State Fair, before making his way to Australia in October. The 305 may be an area code, but it reaches far beyond South Florida. Fans should know that Pitbull wholeheartedly appreciates their efforts and makes sure to watch the crowds arriving for the show. He too is a fan — of them: 'To have people out here feeling that good dressed up as me — man, unbelievable.'
