Where Clemson football landed in Athlon Sports' 2025 season ranking predicitons
Athlon Sports has released its projections for the 2025 college football season, and Clemson is firmly positioned among the nation's elite. The Tigers are ranked No. 5 in Athlon's end-of-season rankings prediction, highlighting their potential to make a serious run at a national championship this fall.
'The Tigers returned to the top of the ACC last season and are poised for a run at the national title in 2025,' wrote Athlon's Steven Lassan. 'Quarterback Cade Klubnik and one of the nation's top receiving corps are back, while the defense is loaded behind new coordinator Tom Allen.'
Clemson rounds out a Top 5 that includes Texas at No. 1, followed by Penn State, Ohio State, and Georgia. The Tigers are one of several programs in that top tier Athlon believes have a legitimate shot at finishing No. 1 by season's end. Just behind Clemson in the Top 10 are Notre Dame (6), LSU (7), Alabama (8), Oregon (9), and ACC foe Miami (10).
Of Clemson's 2025 opponents, LSU and South Carolina are projected to be the toughest tests, ranked No. 7 and No. 12 respectively. LSU returns quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and brings in a strong transfer class, while South Carolina hopes LaNorris Sellers can help cover up some question marks after a deep postseason push last year. SMU also cracked the Top 25 at No. 22, making them another key challenge on Clemson's schedule.
Several more of Clemson's FBS opponents were listed in the Top 60, including Louisville (26), Georgia Tech (34), Duke (41), Florida State (42), North Carolina (52), Boston College (56), Syracuse (57), and Troy (100). That makes for a competitive slate, even by ACC standards.
The ranking reinforces the growing optimism around Dabo Swinney's program heading into the fall. With a proven quarterback in Klubnik, an experienced offensive line, a reloaded defense under Tom Allen, and a receiver group that's being talked about as one of the best in the country, Clemson looks poised to build on last season's return to the top of the ACC.
With the start of the 2025 season now less than 70 days away, Clemson is once again entering the year with legitimate playoff aspirations and the talent to back them up.

Torres draws game-ending walk as Tigers beat Astros 1-0 in 10 innings
Gleyber Torres drew a 10th-inning walk to send home Wenceel Pérez and give the Detroit Tigers a 1-0 win over Houston on Tuesday night, the Astros' third consecutive shutout loss. Pérez started the 10th as the automatic runner on second base and took third on Andy Ibáñez's fly to deep right. Kaleb Ort (2-2) intentionally walked Dillon Dingler, then struck out Javier Báez for the second out. Jahmai Jones walked, loading the bases, and Torres took a 3-2 sweeper low and outside to register his 500th career RBI. Will Vest (6-2) gave up one hit over two scoreless innings. The game featured a marquee pitching matchup, with Tigers ace Tarik Skubal against Detroit native and All-Star Hunter Brown. The pair combined to allow eight hits in 13 scoreless innings. Skubal's 10 strikeouts in seven innings made him the first pitcher to reach 200 in 2025. The Tigers put runners on the corners with one out in the third, but Christian Walker snared Kerry Carpenter's low liner and stepped on first for an inning-ending double play. Zach McKinstry led off the fifth with his ninth triple, but Brown escaped the inning with a groundball, a strikeout and a fly out. The start of the game was delayed 35 minutes by rain. The Astros nearly took the lead in the fourth inning, but Torres' relay throw to the plate was in time to erase Yainer Diaz at the plate. Houston challenged the call, and initial replays seemed to show Diaz's hand got to the plate before Dingler made the tag, but the call was confirmed by New York. The crowd of 30,770 gave the Tigers a season attendance of 1,893,473 through 65 games. Last season, they drew 1,858,295. They have already sold enough tickets to reach 2 million for the first time since 2017. Tigers RHP Charlie Morton (8-10, 5.20 ERA) faces LHP Framber Valdez (11-6, 3.01) on Wednesday.

Tigers' Gleyber Torres set to reach huge milestone tonight vs. Houston
Tigers' Gleyber Torres set to reach huge milestone tonight vs. Houston originally appeared on The Sporting News When Gleyber Torres takes the field tonight, he will join exclusive company. The Detroit Tigers' second baseman will become the 75th active player to reach 1,000 career games, per Chris McCosky of Detroit News. Perhaps more impressive, he will be one of only 11 primary second basemen in MLB history with 150 career home runs by his 1,000th game. And Torres, who made his Major League debut in 2018, is just 28 years old. Torres' journey to 1,000 games The Venezuela native began his climb to the majors in 2013, when he signed as an international free agent with the Chicago Cubs. Five years later, he made his Major League debut during the 2018 season with the New York Yankees and recorded a .271 batting average with 24 home runs and 77 RBI over 123 games. That was a good enough rookie year for Torres to be named an All-Star—a feat he also achieved the following season in 2019, when he upped his average to .278 and set career highs in both homers (38) and RBI (90). After seven years with the Yankees, Torres elected free agency and signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Detroit Tigers before this season. That proved to be the right choice, as he started his first All-Star game this summer and has helped lead the Tigers to the top of the AL Central with a 73-53 record. Torres has a slash line of .261/.357/.401 this season with 13 homers and 58 RBI through 111 games. The Tigers will certainly need that type of production as they begin a three-game series vs. the Houston Astros—who lead the AL West—at Comerica Park tonight. The two teams haven't faced each other since late April, when the Astros took two out of three games in Houston.

Auburn claims 4 additional 'national championships' on its football resume
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn is claiming four additional football national titles and will call itself a nine-time champion moving forward. The Tigers, for decades, boasted titles in 1957 and 2010. They also claimed the 1913, 1983 and 1993 seasons as meeting national championship qualifications. Now, though, athletic director John Cohen is adding titles from 1910, 1914, 1958 and 2004 to the program's resume. It's laudable by some and laughable by others. 'For too long, Auburn has chosen a humble approach to our program's storied history — choosing to recognize only Associated Press national championships,' Cohen told On3 for a story announcing the decision Tuesday. 'Starting this fall, we have made the decision to honor the accomplishments of our deserving student-athletes, coaches and teams from Auburn's proud history. 'Our visible national championship recognitions now align with the well-established standard used by the NCAA's official record book and our peers across the nation.' The Associated Press, which began handing out its annual national championship trophy in 1936, credits Auburn with two titles: 1957 and 2010. Banners recognizing those seasons hang inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. The other titles Auburn is claiming have varying degrees of validity. For example, the Bowl Championship Series existed in 2004, and the Tigers failed to make the title game. They finished 12-0 and third in the rankings behind undefeated USC and undefeated Oklahoma. Auburn finished second in the AP and the coaches' polls after the Trojans handled the Sooners in the title game. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here.
