Referee La Penna Praised For Navigating Tricky Torino 0-2 Inter Milan Serie A Clash On Rain-Soaked Evening

Referee Federico La Penna has won praise for his calm handling of a tricky, rain-soaked match between Torino and Inter Milan.
Today's print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, also argue that La Penna got the penalty decisions right – but was wrong to disallow a late Torino goal.

Referee Federico La Penna was on the whistle at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino yesterday. Torino hosted Inter Milan in both teams' third-last Serie A match of the season.
But right from the start, La Penna had to navigate some choppy waters.
Within the first couple of minutes, there was a medical emergency for a fan in the stands.
Once it became apparent that this was the case, La Penna quickly paused play. This delay went on for about four minutes, but the referee communicated clearly with both sets of players.
Therefore, there were no issues with the players, or restless feelings regarding the delay.

Things would get even more difficult as the first half of yesterday's match wore on.

The rain in Turin got progressively worse through the first 45 minutes.
It eventually got to the point where the playing surface did not allow the players to realistically continue. The ground was sodden with water.
Therefore, the players were clearly slipping, and visibly having trouble getting a foothold.
At times, the ball did not travel naturally across the wet pitch when players tried to pass it.
Therefore, La Penna conferred with the team captains, and agreed to suspend play temporarily. Once again, the Gazzetta praise the referee for managing the situation.
Eventually, Torino and Inter did manage to play out the final few minutes of the first half.

Following this, halftime went well over fifteen minutes. La Penna, together with the players, figured out the right time to resume play in the difficult conditions.
Meanwhile, the Gazzetta argue, La Penna was entirely correct in awarding a penalty to Inter three minutes into the second half.
There was little doubt that Torino goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic had cleared out Nerazzurri striker Mehdi Taremi. And that he'd taken none of the ball.
Meanwhile, the Gazzetta also argue that La Penna got it right in not awarding Torino a penalty late in the second half.
Denzel Dumfries had inadvertently handled the ball following a Cristiano Biraghi shot. But there was little the Dutchman could have done in the situation.

On the other hand, the Gazzetta argue, Inter got away with one when an Adam Masina header was disallowed late in stoppage time.
Kristjan Asllani went down after some shoving. And La Penna saw this as a foul.
However, in the view of the Gazzetta, this was a very soft decision, as the Albanian had gone down under little pressure.

Report – Rayo Vallecano To Pull Out Of Talks For Inter Milan & Argentina Defender

Problems keep piling up for Inter Milan, with Rayo Vallecano set to withdraw from talks to sign Tomas Palacios. According to Gazzetta dello Sport via FCInterNews, the Spaniards are drifting away, leaving Inter with fewer options to offload their flop. Despite emerging as the strongest contenders to sign the 22-year-old, Rayo Vallecano are having second thoughts. Indeed, they are reportedly ready to call off their pursuit of Tomas Palacios, giving Inter another reason for concern. (Photo by) As if missing out on Giovanni Leoni's signature wasn't troubling enough, Inter cannot catch a break on the outgoing market. Leoni has joined Liverpool for a reported fee of €35 million despite Inter's long-standing interest in his services. However, that's the least of Inter's problems. Indeed, the San Siro giants aim to offload Palacios, whom they signed from Independiente Rivadavia last summer. Yet, like in the case of Kristjan Asllani, they cannot find an agreement with potential suitors, leaving the player's future uncertain.

England international agrees to join Liverpool

Liverpool are facing a contract problem with . The French defender is out of contract in 2026 and if no agreement over a new deal is reached then he will be leaving on a free next summer. That would be a bitter blow for sporting director Richard Hughes - with the Reds having invested around £35m in Konate back in 2021. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas home range 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! Liverpool linked with Marc Guehi Although the club signed Giovanni Leoni for £26m from Parma last week, it remains to be seen just how much football the 18-year-old gets through in his rookie season. Accordingly, senior options have been discussed and Marc Guehi looks the ideal candidate in that respect. Like Konate, the Crystal Palace captain is out of contract in 2026 and he too could be departing on a free. Of course Palace are against that idea and if a team comes up with the asking price during this transfer window - said to be £40m - then he too would be on his way. Guehi pledges to join ONLY Liverpool Liverpool seem content to wait although expect them to strike if they get the idea that a deal is in reach before the end of the window. Now according to the Athletic, the Reds have got one less thing to worry about. That's because Guehi has assured the Reds that it's Anfield or nothing - and that he is currently NOT interested in a move elsewhere. The 25-year-old England international has earmarked a move ONLY to the Premier League champions. © IMAGO - Marc Guehi Liverpool Guehi has eyes only for Liverpool "If he leaves Palace now, Guehi only has eyes for Liverpool, who believe they already possess four elite central defenders, so are not expected to seek an alternative if they fail to land the 25-year-old,' the report reads. This stance would appear to tally with other reports concerning the former Chelsea player. Liverpool can be optimistic of landing Guehi for around £40m this summer or else bringing him in on a free in 2026. He may well be a replacement for Konate in time - should the Frenchman fail to renew his deal - but having lost Jarell Quansah and given Joe Gomez's injury record, Arne Slot could do a lot worse than add centre-back depth.
