The 6-foot-7 forward started 34 of 38 games for the Tigers last season, averaging 12.3 points and 3.0 rebounds while earning All-SEC third-team honors. The Tigers lost 79-73 to eventual national champion Florida in the national semifinals, with Baker-Mazara scoring 18 points.
'He's a proven winner and will be a player that we can play all over the floor,' USC coach Eric Musselman said Tuesday. 'Chad will be one of the best returning players in the country this year. Chad plays with incredible passion and emotion that can lift a home crowd.'
Baker-Mazara, who is from the Dominican Republic, started nine of 35 games in his first season with the Tigers. He was selected to the SEC All-Tournament team.
He previously played at Northwest Florida State College and Duquesne before transferring to San Diego State as a sophomore. He was the Mountain West's sixth man of the year and helped the Aztecs to a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Baker-Mazara is the sixth player to join USC for next season via the transfer portal.

Ryder Cup cheer for Tommy Fleetwood after heartbreak in Memphis
Tommy Fleetwood's disappointment at another failure to secure his first PGA Tour victory has been tempered by confirmation he has secured his place on Europe's Ryder Cup team. The English golfer went into the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis on Sunday with a one-shot lead. But a poor finish saw him miss out on a playoff by a stroke and lose the chance to add a PGA Tour title to his wins around the world. The playoff was won by Justin Rose, who has also booked his place at Bethpage Black in New York for the Sept. 26-28 showdown. 'Amazing to have both of these guys back on the Team. They bring so much both on and off the course. Let's Go!' Luke Donald, Europe's Ryder Cup captain, said on X on Monday above a photo of Fleetwood and Rose. Fleetwood, who is set to make his fourth consecutive appearance for Europe, wrote on X: 'Yes!!! Very proud.' Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. ___ AP golf:

Water polo players briefly leave the pool after shots fired near Under-20 World Cup game in Brazil
SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian police said Monday there were no injuries after shots were fired near an Under-20 World Cup women's water polo game between China and Canada in the city of Salvador. China won 12-8 on Sunday — the opening day of the tournament — but footage showed the game being briefly interrupted as players got out of the pool, laid down and took cover by a small barrier after hearing gunshots outside the water polo venue in the Pituba neighborhood. China led Canada 3-2 at the time. 'The match stopped for about a minute. Our team saw that the police was taking care of it,' Marco Antônio Lemos, head of the Bahia state water sports federation, said in a statement. Police said the cause of the shots was a confrontation with an alleged local thief who was outside the venue and tried to escape. No more details were given. Spectators were told about the incident after the game had resumed. Brazil is hosting the 16-team tournament for the first time. ___ AP sports:

Twins reinstate Byron Buxton from injured list to start series vs. Yankees
NEW YORK (AP) — The Minnesota Twins reinstated center fielder Byron Buxton from the 10-day injured list on Monday before beginning a three-game series against the New York Yankees, after the All-Star missed 13 games with inflammation in his left rib cage. Buxton was sidelined just before the Twins tore down their roster leading to the trade deadline. He was batting .282 with 68 runs, 23 homers, 59 RBIs and a .905 OPS in 85 games when he went on the IL, all team-leading totals and averages among players with a qualifying amount of at-bats. The Twins sent outfielder Carson McCusker to Triple-A St. Paul to make room for Buxton, who also has stolen 17 bases in 17 attempts. Despite the rib cage issue and a concussion that cost him time earlier, Buxton has been as healthy as he has in several seasons. He's on pace for the second-most games in his 11-year major league career, behind the 140 games he played in in 2017.
