Fadnavis said, "The lower court gave a verdict, and in 2006, after the blasts, the ATS caught the accused, collected evidence and presented it before the courts. I have not read the full (HC) judgement, but I discussed it with the lawyers and informed them it must be challenged in Supreme Court. We will go to SC at the earliest," he said.
BJP's Kirit Somaiya, who has been advocating for the train blasts survivors, said the CM had assured him the state would appeal.
"We are all shocked and pained by the verdict. I have spoken to CM Fadnavis. He has assured us the govt will seek help of top legal experts and an appeal will be filed as soon as possible," said Somaiya, who had taken a group of survivors to meet additional chief secretary (CMO) I S Chahal in Mantralaya on Monday.
"The lower court had awarded death sentence. But there must have been some shortcomings in the investigation conducted in 2006.
I am convinced SC will give us justice," Somaiya added.
Revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said, "We will be looking into the basis on which they have been acquitted and whether additional proof was required. We will look into the possibility of an appeal after consulting the CM."
Food and civil supplies minister Chhagan Bhujbal said, "We will have to carefully look into where the prosecution fell short and what was missing.

After that, we could go to SC."
Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora said on X, "As a Mumbaikar, I cannot accept the verdict... In 2006, I was an MP from Mumbai and went and saw what happened in that terrorist attack. I appeal to the Maharashtra government that they should involve the best lawyers and appeal against the verdict as soon as possible."
Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad said on X, "Victims of the Mumbai train blasts must get justice.
The Chief Minister should urgently intervene in this matter. An appeal must be filed in the SC." She added, "I think the Maharashtra govt may not have done what we expected in terms of the collection of evidence or appointment of the public prosecutor."
Rohit Pawar from NCP (SP) said, "We will have to look at why the court gave this decision and whether the evidence fell short. Did the state govt fall short in presenting its position?"
Shiv Sena's Sanjay Nirupam said, "The order is very unfortunate and essentially says none of those arrested were responsible. The question is – then who orchestrated the blasts? Was there anything lacking in the work done by the probe agency?"

Justice Dipankar Datta had no business questioning Rahul Gandhi's Indianness, says Odisha Congress president Bhakta Charan Das

Odisha Congress president Bhakta Charan Das on Tuesday registered his objection to the observation made by the Supreme Court questioning Rahul Gandhi for his "China occupied Indian territory" remarks. He said that Justice Dipankar Datta had no business to question Gandhi's "Indianness" for merely criticising the Modi government's "failure on Chinese aggression ". He further said that an activist of Ladakh, Sonam Wangchuk, has also been expressing concern about Chinese incursion into Indian territory. This comes after the Supreme Court pulled up Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his alleged remarks on the Indian Army after a clash between the Indian and Chinese armies in the Yangsi region of Arunachal Pradesh in 2022. A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih expressed disapproval of Gandhi's remarks, saying, "How does he know the Chinese occupied 2000 square kilometres of land?" and added that a true Indian wouldn't say such a thing. Justice Datta said, "How do you get to know that 2000 square kilometres of Indian territory was occupied by China? What is the credible material? If you are a true indian, you would not say this. When there is a conflict across borders... can you say all this?" The bench further asked senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Gandhi, why such statements were not made in Parliament but instead on social media.

CM Siddaramaiah gets SC quota report; cabinet to discuss on August 7

BENGALURU: Justice (retd) HN Nagamohan Das submitted his report on sub-classification of reservation for Scheduled Castes (SC) to the state government on Monday. The report will be placed before the cabinet on August 7 to decide on its implementation, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told reporters after receiving the report. Rubbishing controversies surrounding the SC caste survey by the commission, he said there were no issues with the survey. The report is 1,766-page long and includes the survey data and analysis with six recommendations. Justice Das' suggestions include division of 17% quota for internal reservation among 101 castes by classifying them as ABCD groups, within SCs. 'I was asked to submit a report on internal reservation under my chairmanship. We conducted the survey for 60 days by using a mobile app. Over 27 lakh Scheduled Caste families have been covered. Everything has been verified and the report submitted. It is now the property of the government. It is up to the government to accept or reject it,' Justice Das told reporters after submitting the report at Vidhana Soudha. The communities that participated in the survey are anxiously waiting to know their population and the quantum of reservation recommended for them. Systematic report made using modern tech: Dr G The SC left community leadership, which often claims that they are more in numbers than SC right, hope for not less than 6.5% out of the 17% reservation. Echoing the sentiments of the community, former minister HH Anjaneya urged the CM to make the Justice HN Nagamohan Das report public. While Bhovis, Lambanis, Korachas and Koramas have been classified as one group, other castes are also expecting their fair share of the quota. Ministers hailing from different SC castes - Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara, Social Welfare Minister Dr HC Mahadevappa, Food and Civil Supplies Minister KH Muniyappa, Excise Minister RB Timmapur, RDPR Minister Priyank Kharge and Backward Classes Welfare Minister Shivaraj Thangadagi were present when Justice Das submitted the report. The CM directed Chief Secretary Dr Shalini Rajneesh and social welfare department principal secretary to take steps to place it before the cabinet meeting on Thursday.

Traders begin protest against illegal encroachments in Chandni Chowk

NEW DELHI: Traders in Chandni Chowk began a week-long silent protest on Monday, accusing civic agencies and the police of ignoring court orders and allowing illegal encroachments to return to the redeveloped stretch of the historic market. Led by the Chandni Chowk Sarv Vyapar Mandal, the protest began at 3 pm from Sunheri Masjid at Fountain Chowk, with participants marching silently towards Red Fort holding placards with excerpts from orders of the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court. The demonstrators sat near Red Fort for 30 minutes before returning to the starting point. 'This is a protest to uphold the dignity of our courts and demand that their orders be implemented,' said Sanjay Bhargava, president of the association. 'We have been doing the rounds of the Supreme Court, High Court and the National Green Tribunal for years regarding these matters. Despite strict orders, the situation has worsened,' he further said. The protestors allege that hawkers and squatters have been allowed to encroach upon the 1.3 km stretch redeveloped under court supervision at a cost of Rs 140 crore. The traders also claimed that the Delhi Police and the MCD have 'willfully ignored' court orders prohibiting hawking and squatting in certain areas. Bhargava said the group has made repeated complaints to the MCD and Delhi Police but no action has been taken. 'Even Member of Parliament for Chandni Chowk, Praveen Khandelwal has visited four times, but no one listens,' he added. The protest will continue till August 14, with a march each day to different parts of the area, including Town Hall and Fatehpuri Masjid. The traders say they want to 'name and shame' those responsible for the deterioration of the redeveloped area and seek freedom from the 'corruption that has hijacked public land and defied court directions.'
