My Hero OTT Release Date: When and where to watch Eric Roberts' Kannada debut, also starring Djilali Rez-Kallah
My Hero OTT Release Date: After a successful run in theatres and on the film festival circuit, Avinash Vijaykumar's debut film is finally making its way to your screens at home. The much-talked-about Kannada drama, which features Hollywood actor Djilali Rez-Kallah in the lead and marks the Kannada debut of Eric Roberts (yes, Julia Roberts' brother and the man you might remember from The Dark Knight), is set to stream on Amazon Prime Video starting May 30, 2025.
But there's a catch. My Hero is expected to drop under Amazon Prime Video's TVOD (Transactional Video on Demand) model. So, if you were planning to binge it as part of your subscription, you might need to rent it separately instead.
What is My Hero all about?
Set in Madhya Pradesh's Maheshwar Ghats, My Hero revolves around Gary, an American who travels to India to perform Hindu Tithi Shradh rituals for his deceased son. The role is portrayed with grace and restraint by Djilali Rez-Kallah. Soon after arriving, Gary meets Vishwa, a street-smart young local boy played by Vedik Kaushik, known from Drama Juniors.
As Gary prepares for the rituals, Vishwa shows him around the holy town. What begins as a typical guide-tourist interaction slowly transforms into a deeper connection. The duo form a strong bond, and Gary starts questioning why this bright boy is not in school. The answer he receives is anything but easy to hear.
This one is based on a true story
What gives My Hero its weight is that it draws from two real-life events. One, a shocking story of a young boy from an oppressed caste who was mutilated for touching a religious idol during a procession. The second, actor Sylvester Stallone's visit to Varanasi to perform Hindu rites for his late son.
Avinash Vijaykumar, the writer-director, melded these two incidents into a moving narrative. The film is told from Gary's point of view, documenting not just his rituals but also Vishwa's painful journey, how he was shunned by his village and what made him flee from Karnataka all the way to Madhya Pradesh.
Apart from its international flavour with Djilali and Eric Roberts, My Hero also features some of Kannada cinema's finest actors, including H. G. Dattatreya, Prakash Belawadi, Ankita Amar, James Gioia, Niranjan Deshpande, Tanuja Krishnappa, Kshitij Pawar and Dattanna.

My life and writing are one and the same: Booker Prize winner Banu Mushtaq
'My life is like an open book... There is nothing to hide. My life and writing are one and the same,' said International Booker Prize winner Banu Mushtaq. Speaking during an interaction, organised by the Karnataka Media Academy at Press Club, Bengaluru, on Wednesday, she said that there are many prejudices in society about a woman from a Muslim family writing boldly. 'A few years ago, a police officer asked me whether to write 'Miss' or 'Mrs' before my name while sending an invitation. Also, at an event in Bengaluru, a member of the audience asked me to share my experience of being divorced. I confronted him, asking who told him that I was divorced. I have been happily married for 50 years.... All these issues will be incorporated in my autobiography,' she said. Shedding light about the selection of her book Heart Lamp for the Booker Prize, she said: 'This is the first time that a collection of short stories has been awarded the Booker Prize. Heart Lamp was third among the three works selected for the final round of the award.... The selection committee considered the impact the work had on people,' she explained. 'When I felt that I had no life without writing, I turned to journalism. Later, I became a writer and a lawyer. Writing should not have any linguistic boundaries. I had my education in a Kannada-medium school, and wrote in Kannada. For writers, content is important, not the language,' she said. One's work can always be translated into other languages later, Ms. Mushtaq added. Deepa Bhasthi, translator of Heart Lamp, said that while translating, she felt no compulsion to impress the Western readers. 'Therefore, many words used in the original have been retained. English became better because of Heart Lamp,' she said. Chairperson of the Karnataka Media Academy Ayesha Khanum, journalist Dinesh Amin Mattu, and others were present at the event.

Amid Kannada Language Row, Kamal Haasan Reacts To Bengaluru Stampede: 'Heart-Wrenching Tragedy'
Last Updated: Kamal Haasan mourned the Bengaluru stampede victims amid his film's release row, saying his 'heart reaches out' to affected families. Actor-politician Kamal Haasan has expressed grief over the tragic stampede near Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives and injured 33 others. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, as thousands gathered for Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL victory celebrations. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Kamal wrote, 'Heart wrenching tragedy in Bangalore. Deeply distressed and my heart reaches out to the families of the victims in this moment of grief. May the injured recover soon." Heart wrenching tragedy in Bangalore. Deeply distressed and my heart reaches out to the families of the victims in this moment of grief. May the injured recover soon.— Kamal Haasan (@ikamalhaasan) June 4, 2025 Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed the stampede occurred due to an overwhelming crowd at the stadium, where RCB players were to be felicitated following their IPL 2025 win. He described it as an 'unexpected tragedy" and announced an ex gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased, along with a magisterial inquiry. The RCB team, including star player Virat Kohli, had earlier visited Vidhana Soudha to meet CM Siddaramaiah before proceeding to the stadium for the public celebrations. Eyewitnesses noted that fans began scaling walls and fences, leading to the chaos that triggered the stampede. Kamal Haasan's reaction came amid an ongoing controversy over his recent comments on the Kannada language. The veteran actor had earlier remarked that Kannada originated from Tamil, a statement that triggered backlash from several Kannada groups. Though he clarified that his remarks were meant to express affection for the late Kannada icon Dr Rajkumar and his family, demands for an apology persisted. Speaking to the media ahead of the pan-India release of his upcoming film Thug Life, Haasan refrained from re-addressing the language row. He added, 'I will speak at length later, as a Tamil who wants to speak a lot." The film is scheduled for release across India and globally on Friday, except in Karnataka. Haasan had sought court protection for the film's release in the state, but later confirmed that Thug Life would not be released in Karnataka following observations from the Karnataka High Court. Sources close to him said, 'There can be no demand for an apology in a gunpoint situation," referring to alleged pressure from fringe groups. First Published: June 05, 2025, 00:44 IST
