Tenerife teenager Jay Slater had taken drugs and was a 14-hour walk from home
Mr Slater, who had earlier been forced to leave a nightclub because he was so drunk, instead of going back to the apartment he shared with Mr Geoghegan, went to an Airbnb, miles away, with two men they had met on the holiday.
The next morning Mr Geoghegan said he got a video call from Mr Slater, who was walking along a road and was still 'under the influence', Preston Coroner's Court heard.
Mr Geoghegan said: 'I said put your maps on to see how far you were. It was like a 14-hour walk or an hour drive. I said, 'Get a taxi back', then he just goes, 'I will ring you back'.'
The witness said he did not think his friend had any money on him, and taxis in Tenerife insisted on payment up front before carrying a fare.
Coroner Dr James Adeley asked the witness: 'Did you get the impression he was in any way threatened or fearful, or under duress in a difficult situation?'
Mr Geoghegan replied: 'No. I think he probably got there and thought, 'Why am I here?', sobered up and decided to come back.'
Mr Slater, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, was holidaying on the Spanish island and had been to the NRG music festival with friends at the Papagayo nightclub in the resort of Playa de las Americas, on June 16 last year.
Mr Slater vanished the morning after going to the Airbnb and was reported missing on June 18.
Evidence heard during the inquest suggested he had left the holiday let, and after failing to get a bus or taxi, attempted to walk back to his own apartment and had fallen from a height into a ravine.
A huge search was launched before his body was found in a steep and inaccessible area, by a mountain rescue team from the Spanish Civil Guard, near the village of Masca, on July 15.
Mr Slater's mother, Debbie Duncan had asked for the inquest into the death to be resumed on Thursday after a number of witnesses failed to give evidence at the last hearing in May.
She said Mr Slater's family still had questions about their loved one's death that needed answers.
Dr Adeley agreed to adjourn the inquest until Thursday to trace the witnesses, those who had been with him in the hours before he vanished.
The hearing in May heard from a number of witnesses, including toxicology expert Dr Stephanie Martin.
The court heard analysis showed traces of drugs, including cocaine, ketamine and ecstasy, along with alcohol, were found in Mr Slater's body.
Home Office pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd said his post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as head injuries, and Mr Slater's body showed no evidence of restraint or assault, with the pattern of injuries consistent with a fall from a height.
Detective Chief Inspector Rachel Higson, from Lancashire Constabulary, said police had analysed Mr Slater's phone data.
On the night out he had received phone messages from friends telling him to go home as he was 'off his head'.
Phone location data suggested Mr Slater had travelled to the Airbnb and the next morning left the property at about 7.45am.
Statements from Spanish witnesses said they were approached and asked by Mr Slater about buses or taxis to take him home.
More messages from friends warned him about the 'boiling' heat of the day, but activity data on his phone stopped at 8.51am, suggesting his phone battery had died.
Marieke Krans from Dutch rescue charity Signi Zoekhonden, which uses dogs, helped in the search.
She said the area where the body was found was about a three-and-a-half-hour walk from the Airbnb and was 'really steep, really dangerous', and it was 'easy' to lose your footing.
The next witness, Ayub Qassim, said he and a friend, Steven Roccas, met Mr Slater and his friends out in Tenerife.
He said he had been in a different venue then later met Mr Slater and Mr Geoghegan getting something to eat after the clubs closed.
Mr Qassim described Mr Slater as: 'On a buzz. Chilled, happy. Mingling in'it.'
He said Mr Slater asked if he could come back to his and Mr Roccas' apartment.
Mr Qassim, giving evidence via videolink, told the hearing: 'I did say, 'Bro, oh mate, it's so far away from the strip.' There's nothing happening there other than scenery. I said I would drop him off in the morning. He rolled with us.'
The coroner then asked the witness about messages Mr Slater had sent about possibly a watch being stolen.
Mr Qassim said while still on the strip before leaving for their apartment he saw what he described as a Romanian, 'Lucky-lucky' man take a watch from another person and tried to sell it to him and Mr Slater.
He added: 'Jay did not steal no watch. I can say one hundred per cent.'
While on the drive to the Airbnb Mr Slater then posted a message to friends on social media, saying: 'Just took a 12k Rolly (Rolex) off some c*** with this Maili (Somalian) kid. Off to get 10 quid (thousand) for it. Off my undies ha, ha, ha.'
Coroner Dr Adeley asked the witness: 'You were not involved in taking a watch?'
Mr Qassim replied: 'No. And neither was he.'
Asked to explain the social media post by Mr Slater, the witness said: 'He could be boasting to his friends. He's on a buzz, so maybe it could be that. Sometimes people do exaggerate.'
The coroner continued: 'But so far as you are concerned, none of that is true?'
Mr Qassim said: 'No. One hundred per cent. I didn't see a watch. At this point he's just firing off messages.'
He said when they got to his Airbnb he gave Mr Slater a blanket and pillow and told him he could sleep on the sofa before going off to his own bed.

Famous chef dumped boyfriend's body parts all over holiday resort to hide sick murder
Daniel Sancho Bronchalo was sentenced to life in prison after he confessed to killing his plastic surgeon boyfriend Edwin Arrieta Arteaga, 44, and dismembering his body A YouTube chef dismembered his partner and disposed of his body in plastic bags in a horrific murder. Daniel Sancho Bronchalo, 31, confessed to murdering his plastic surgeon boyfriend, Edwin Arrieta Arteaga, on a Thai party island. The shamed chef also admitted to dismembering Dr Arteaga's body last August when their argument over "sex and money" reached a boiling point. It comes after a woman, 20, was found dead on bus with 26 iPhones glued to her body. The couple had been holidaying in Koh Pha Ngnan - known for its all-night Full Moon Parties - when the crime took place. Police discovered parts of Arteaga's body at a landfill in Koh Phangan in early August 2024. Around the same time, Bronchalo went to the police to report that Dr Arteaga, 44, was missing. Bronchalo, the son of two Spanish film stars, initially claimed at his trial that the two had a fight after Dr Arteaga allegedly attempted to sexually assault him. He then alleged that the Colombian surgeon fell as the fight escalated, hitting his head on a bathtub before losing consciousness and dying. Bronchalo had denied premeditated murder - but then confessed to chillingly dismembering Dr Arteaga's body and throwing his lifeless remains into the sea. He led police to seven sites around the island, where he disposed of Dr Arteagae's body in plastic bags. CCTV footage obtained by police showed the chef buying a knife, rubber gloves, waste bags, and cleaning chemicals at a convenience store prior to Arrieta's death, which prosecutors argued strengthened the claim of premeditated murder. According to the police, Bronchalo then confessed to the murder and stated that he planned it because Dr Arteaga threatened to disgrace him and his family by revealing their sexual relationship. The shamed YouTube chef was sentenced to life in prison. Initially, he was given the death penalty, but the Koh Samui provincial court decided to give him a life sentence instead due to his co-operation during the trial, according to local police officer Paisan Sangthep. Bronchalo initially also received a four-month prison sentence for concealing or damaging a body, but this was reduced to two months as he admitted to the horrific act. He as also ordered to pay 4 million baht (£89,000) in damages to Dr Arteaga's family. Daniel Sancho Bronchalo is the son of renowned Spanish actors Rodolfo Sancho Aguirre and Silvia Bronchalo, both 50. They were present at the Koh Samui Provincial Court where their son was sentenced last summer. Bronchalo's case caused a stir in Spain, and HBO has produced a Spanish-language documentary based on the chilling events. Last August, it was reported that the chef had dismembered his lover's body into 14 separate pieces, packed them into a suitcase, and then kayaked out into the sea to scatter them. Body parts were also scattered around the island. Local residents found Mr Arteaga's remains - including his hips and thighs - in a rubbish tip on the island, according to the police. Police Lieutenant General Surapong Thanomjit said at the time: "The suspect has confessed to being the one who killed Edwin Arrieta Arteaga and dismembered the body. "He put the parts in a suitcase and left them in the sea. He claimed that the victim was angry when he refused to sleep with him. Then he punched him in the head, causing him to fall over and hit the bathtub, so he cut the body to disguise the death. Investigators found traces of the victim's body in the hotel room the suspect booked." The famous chef had filed a missing persons report for Edwin following the murder.

Brit siblings, 11 & 13, who drowned on ‘dream' Spain hols were ‘water babies' who went swimming every day, family says
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE Brit siblings who drowned during their "dream" holiday in Spain were "water babies" who used to swim every day, their family revealed. Ameiya Parris and Ricardo Junior Parris tragically died on Tuesday while on holiday at Llarga beach in Salou, near Tarragona. Their aunty Kayla Delbrocco from Birmingham said the kids had been swimming "every day' in the sea - and would have had no reason to believe they were in danger. She told The Sun: 'It was supposed to be a special day - the kids love the beach, they go every day. 'They've always been water babies - they'd been in every day. We had gone on holiday together there six years ago, so they were excited to go back and knew what to expect. 'It's beautiful out there. They were older, so they could remember, but their younger siblings hadn't experienced it before. So it was nice that the six of them were going.' Aunty Kayla said the family headed to the beach just before 8.30pm on Tuesday for their nightly swim, just half an hour after lifeguards clocked off. Ameiya and Ricardo Jr, known lovingly as Maya and Jubs, were in the water with dad Ricardo Sr, when the trio were swept up in the difficult waters, with the alarm raised just before 8.50pm. Kayla continued: 'They weren't even that far in - they've been going there the same time every day. It was just another day for them. 'It doesn't look like it's dangerous - They had like a yellow flag saying you're safe to go in, but just be careful. 'We've come to learn that the beach was dangerous; someone had died in the morning, the same day. A 54-year-old German man died the same day as the little ones. Heartbreaking tributes to Brit friends, 27 & 29, who both drowned in Algarve holiday pool in 'unimaginable' tragedy 'There was no word about it or anything - no warning. We've come to learn that there have been 16/17 deaths there in the past month.' Ricardo Sr desperately tried to save Maya and Jubs, but got into trouble himself in what was described as 'stormy' seas off the Spanish beach. Their mum, Shanice, had taken the other four children to the toilet before returning to the dramatic scenes. Aunty Kayla said: 'When it happened, my sister [Shanice] went to take the little ones to the bathroom. Then, when she came back, there was everyone everywhere.' Emergency services rushed to the aid of the trio, and managed to revive Ricardo Jr, and with Maya and Jubs, Kayla said medics 'tirelessly tried to revive them'. She said: 'They managed to save Ricardo Sr Junior was airlifted straight to the hospital and Maya was worked on at the beach.' 7 Ameiya and Ricardo Junior tragically drowned off the coast of Spain 7 7 The siblings, known as Maya and Jubs, were enjoying a family holiday with their parents and four other children But tragically, despite the efforts of emergency services, Maya and Jubs both passed away - leaving the entire family devastated. Kayla said: '[Ricardo Sr and Shanice] are going through the motions, they're keeping it together. They wouldn't be able to do it without each other. 'This is the first holiday where there were six [children] and they hadn't been on holiday for some time. 'They've been doing everything they can to make sure the [four] little ones are engaged. It's been a difficult time for them.' Kayla confirmed that repatriation teams had been in contact with the family and that 'paperwork was ready' - with parents Shanice and Ricardo insisting they won't leave Salou without Maya and Jubs. She added: 'They are staying there until they can bring the kids home - they won't leave without them.' A GoFundMe was made by family friend Holly Marquis-Johnson in honour of Maya and Jubs, to help ' ease some of the financial burden' of repatriation and to give the 'dignified farewell they deserve'. Leaving a heartbreaking tribute on the fundraiser, Holly wrote: 'Maya was intelligent, thoughtful, and growing into a strong young woman. Ricardo Junior was playful, kind, and always smiling. 'They brought so much love, laughter, and energy into the lives of everyone around them.' The GoFundMe, which had a target of £15,000, has raised over £39,000 at the time of writing, with an outpouring of support from donors. In a statement sent as a voice message to The Sun, Kayla expressed her gratitude to the public for the overwhelming support. She said: 'We want to give our thanks as family for all the kindness and overwhelming generosity of the national community. 'Times are really difficult for everyone, yet people still sacrificed what they can to support our baby sister [Shanice] and Ricardo in this living nightmare. 'Our babies can come home now and we can all start grieving together. Thanks will never be enough, but sincere thanks from our hearts is all we can give you right now. 'We really appreciate what you have all done. Thank you.' It comes after six-year-old Casius, who was also on the trip, is now trying to make sense of the unimaginable tragedy. Casius is said to have told his mother: "Did you know Maya and Jubs are in heaven now? Juby went to heaven in a helicopter". The heartbreaking words were told to the Daily Mail by his aunt Macalia Del Brocco after Ricardo Jnr was airlifted to the hospital. Macalia said: "So that's his understanding of it, which is bittersweet, because that was what he saw. "And it's beautiful that he thinks that's what happened, but very sadly tragic at the same time."
