Big paneer scam: How your fav veg platter is adulterated and reaches your kitchen

Ranchi: Infamous for Jamtara and cybercrime, Jharkhand cops and the food safety officials are now waging a different war — a raging paneer scam. In less than a week, officials have seized thousands of kilograms of adulterated paneer worth lakhs across two different districts.

Authorities are saying 'organised' gangs are flooding the markets with cheap and adulterated paneer which could have serious health implications on consumers.
Following the seizure of around 4,000 kg paneer from a Ranchi bound passenger bus from Bihar last week, authorities in Ramgarh on Monday morning recovered nearly one quintal stocks comprising paneer and khowa.
With Bihar links surfacing during the seizures, authorities have put all the districts bordering Bihar on alert, and directed regular raids to break the illegal supply chain.
Besides Bihar, sources in the state food safety department told TOI said that Bengal, another neighbouring state, is also a major supplier of such spurious items into Jharkhand markets.
For transit, the gangs are mostly using passenger buses and vans and carrying edibles and other goods to evade checks.
"Passenger buses are unlikely suspects, which serves as safe passage for transportation. For drivers and helpers of buses, it's an easy way to earn money," said a police official, who was part of the assist-team during the raid in Hazaribag.
Talking to TOI, Ramgarh food safety officer, Dipashri Srivastava said, "Such adulterated items are mainly coming from Khagariya, Patna, Chapra, Bhatiyarpur, Maneer and places bordering Jharkhand. Today's raid was based on a precise tip-off which led to the massive recovery." Although, she maintained that a cumulative fine of Rs 35,000 has been imposed on the three buses from where the consignment meant to Ranchi market, further punitive action will be taken on the bus and its handlers and owners following further probe.

"We conducted an iodine test on paneer on the spot which testified it was adulterated. It was high on starch and araroot. Khowa samples are under test, after which they will be destroyed," she said.
Ranchi's food safety officer Subir Ranjan maintained that their analysis into the entire nexus revealed that Bihar and Bengal are the major suppliers of fake paneer and milk products to Jharkhand. The state's food safety cell with the help of local police is now trying to plug the entry points.
"We surprised the illegal traders by conducting raids in Hazaribag last week. Had we planned to raid in Ranchi once the buses reached, chances were that it may not have been successful or the quantum of seizure would have been less.
Today's raid in Ramgarh is another unconventional spot for raid. Our focus is to intercept such illegal consignment at places along the transit routes where one wont anticipate a potential raid," he said.
Detailing on the transit routes, he said, "Items coming from Bihar usually enter Jharkhand either through Koderma or Gaya route which converge at Barhi to further reach Ranchi and beyond. Similarly from Bengal, they either enter via Silli, Tamar on Ranchi border or via Kharagpur, Ghatshila to reach Jamshedpur and beyond. Govt's effort now is to plug those borders."
Ranjan said his office is in the process of mandating eateries and restaurants to retain bonafide bills of milk, paneer and milk products which are used by them on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. "This will add a deterrence ring on them to purchase adulterated items at a cheap rate and pass it to customers. As per the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India norms, any food item which is being transported must have a valid certificate declaring it as fit and transportation with other details.
Also, it should have proper packaging with details mandated under the food safety act," he said.

Fund manager arrested for ‘front-running' seeks bail, claims company thrived in his tenure

The former chief trader and fund manager of Axis Mutual Fund arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over allegations of cheating through front-running, has claimed in his bail plea that the mutual fund 'only thrived' during his tenure and that he regularly received 'outstanding' ratings in annual appraisals. Viresh Joshi was arrested on August 2 by the ED ,for allegedly misusing confidential information on trades to be executed on behalf of Axis Mutual Fund to preemptively trade stocks, generating substantial illicit gains, through front-running — an illegal trading practice where a fund manager or broker exploits a non-public impending large investment decision to take a position and benefit from price rise after the large investment. The ED has claimed that it suspects the proceeds of crime to be Rs 300 crore in the case, with Rs 91 crore so far traced to bank accounts of family members of Joshi from various shell companies. 'The applicant's (Joshi) professional conduct throughout his 14-year-tenure at Axis Asset Management Company, (AMC) has been beyond reproach. He consistently met or exceeded performance targets, earning timely promotions from assistant vice president to senior vice president and regularly receiving 'outstanding' ratings in annual appraisals. His integrity and diligence were recognised through multiple internal awards….and invitations to speak at prominent industry forums,' the bail plea filed through lawyer Manan Sanghai said. 'The conduct of the applicant during his tenure more than sufficiently adduces that Axis Mutual Funds only thrived while the applicant was employed with them as is evidenced by the publicly available documents issued by AMF in respect of its own mutual funds scheme,' it said. Joshi further said that all trades were routed only through empanelled brokers and he had no discretion over trade selection, timing or price and operated strictly within a tightly regulated framework. 'The applicant's role was operational in nature and served solely to assist between the fund manager's decision and the said decision's market execution,' the bail plea said. In February 2022, the board of directors of the Axis AMC decided to conduct an internal investigation and all employees were asked to hand over their personal and work email ID with passwords, office computer data, office mobile recorded phones, work from home laptops, personal phones, to an external independent investigator. Joshi was placed under temporary suspension on May 3, 2022, and was terminated on May 18, 2022. Market regulatory authority, Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) had initiated a probe and summoned Joshi. He submitted that he had complied with the summons and his statement was recorded. Sebi passed an interim order in 2023 stating that Joshi was involved in 'front-running', and directions were issued including repayment of alleged illegal gains of Rs 30.56 crore. The bail plea says that the allegations are based on snippets of chat and incomplete trade logs and other data, and is pending finality. Joshi in his plea has said that he has cooperated with the probe, spanning multiple parallel agencies, including the Sebi, EOW, Income Tax department and ED and that he is not a flight risk. The ED has been asked to file a reply.

The woman's stepmother has also been detained in the matter, police said. Investigations began on August 10 after villagers in the Bahardoi “Shahbazpur area spotted the dismembered body near an irrigation canal. Five police teams were formed to investigate the case as initial efforts to identify the victim failed. On Monday, the police identified the victim as Tamanna (19) from Adhauna village in Akrabad, Aligarh district. Her uncle, Abdul Farahim Khan, confirmed the identity and lodged a complaint against unidentified persons. During the investigation, police found that the woman's father, Hasrat Ali, her step-mother, and the step-grandfather, Rajjo Pehalwan alias Raju from Alhaipur village in Hathras district, were involved in the murder, they said. On Tuesday morning, police arrested Hasrat and Rajjo near a canal in Salempur, and detained the stepmother from her parental home in Alhaipur. According to police, Hasrat had divorced Tamanna's mother six years ago and remarried, following which she lived with her father and stepmother. In July, she allegedly left home with a young man from Aligarh for a short time before returning. This allegedly enraged Hasrat and his second wife, leading to harassment and physical abuse, police said. On August 8, Tamanna left her home quietly in the afternoon but was intercepted by her father and stepmother near the Panethi Bridge in Aligarh. Fearing social stigma, the two plotted to kill her and also involved the step-father. Swipe Left For Next Video View all Superintendent of Police Chiranjeev Nath Sinha said, 'the girl was lured to her step-grandfather's house in Chandpa, where she was drugged, strangled, and then taken to the canal.
