‘Sorry, I didn't get that': AI misunderstands some people's words more than others
The idea of a humanlike artificial intelligence assistant that you can speak with has been alive in many people's imaginations since the release of 'Her,' Spike Jonze's 2013 film about a man who falls in love with a Siri-like AI named Samantha. Over the course of the film, the protagonist grapples with the ways in which Samantha, real as she may seem, is not and never will be human.
Twelve years on, this is no longer the stuff of science fiction. Generative AI tools like ChatGPT and digital assistants like Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa help people get driving directions, make grocery lists, and plenty else. But just like Samantha, automatic speech recognition systems still cannot do everything that a human listener can.
You have probably had the frustrating experience of calling your bank or utility company and needing to repeat yourself so that the digital customer service bot on the other line can understand you. Maybe you've dictated a note on your phone, only to spend time editing garbled words.
Linguistics and computer science researchers have shown that these systems work worse for some people than for others. They tend to make more errors if you have a non-native or a regional accent, are Black, speak in African American Vernacular English, code-switch, if you are a woman, are old, are too young or have a speech impediment.
Unlike you or me, automatic speech recognition systems are not what researchers call 'sympathetic listeners.' Instead of trying to understand you by taking in other useful clues like intonation or facial gestures, they simply give up. Or they take a probabilistic guess, a move that can sometimes result in an error.
As companies and public agencies increasingly adopt automatic speech recognition tools in order to cut costs, people have little choice but to interact with them. But the more that these systems come into use in critical fields, ranging from emergency first responders and health care to education and law enforcement, the more likely there will be grave consequences when they fail to recognize what people say.
Imagine sometime in the near future you've been hurt in a car crash. You dial 911 to call for help, but instead of being connected to a human dispatcher, you get a bot that's designed to weed out nonemergency calls. It takes you several rounds to be understood, wasting time and raising your anxiety level at the worst moment.
What causes this kind of error to occur? Some of the inequalities that result from these systems are baked into the reams of linguistic data that developers use to build large language models. Developers train artificial intelligence systems to understand and mimic human language by feeding them vast quantities of text and audio files containing real human speech. But whose speech are they feeding them?
If a system scores high accuracy rates when speaking with affluent white Americans in their mid-30s, it is reasonable to guess that it was trained using plenty of audio recordings of people who fit this profile.
With rigorous data collection from a diverse range of sources, AI developers could reduce these errors. But to build AI systems that can understand the infinite variations in human speech arising from things like gender, age, race, first vs. second language, socioeconomic status, ability and plenty else, requires significant resources and time.
For people who do not speak English – which is to say, most people around the world – the challenges are even greater. Most of the world's largest generative AI systems were built in English, and they work far better in English than in any other language. On paper, AI has lots of civic potential for translation and increasing people's access to information in different languages, but for now, most languages have a smaller digital footprint, making it difficult for them to power large language models.
Even within languages well-served by large language models, like English and Spanish, your experience varies depending on which dialect of the language you speak.
Right now, most speech recognition systems and generative AI chatbots reflect the linguistic biases of the datasets they are trained on. They echo prescriptive, sometimes prejudiced notions of 'correctness' in speech.
In fact, AI has been proved to 'flatten' linguistic diversity. There are now AI startup companies that offer to erase the accents of their users, drawing on the assumption that their primary clientele would be customer service providers with call centers in foreign countries like India or the Philippines. The offering perpetuates the notion that some accents are less valid than others.
AI will presumably get better at processing language, accounting for variables like accents, code-switching and the like. In the U.S., public services are obligated under federal law to guarantee equitable access to services regardless of what language a person speaks. But it is not clear whether that alone will be enough incentive for the tech industry to move toward eliminating linguistic inequities.
Many people might prefer to talk to a real person when asking questions about a bill or medical issue, or at least to have the ability to opt out of interacting with automated systems when seeking key services. That is not to say that miscommunication never happens in interpersonal communication, but when you speak to a real person, they are primed to be a sympathetic listener.
With AI, at least for now, it either works or it doesn't. If the system can process what you say, you are good to go. If it cannot, the onus is on you to make yourself understood.

New iPhone Fold leak reveals cameras, but does it beat the Galaxy Z Fold 7?

We're also learning about the foldable iPhone's dual 48MP rear cameras for the first time. The new leak once again cites the use of a specialized composite metal for the hinge and titanium for the premium iPhone's frame. Chatter around the foldable iPhone is gaining momentum, with Apple recently ordering flexible display panels for the premium foldable that is expected to arrive in 2026. Along with this development, rumors, including tentative specifications of the iPhone Fold, have also started to flow in. Reliable leaker Digital Chat Station (DCS) shared fresh bits about the display on the iPhone Fold (or, whatever it may be officially called) and the cameras, indicating how the device could fare in comparison with other book-style foldables, especially the Galaxy Z Fold — the generation following the Galaxy Z Fold 7 — due in 2026. Consistent with previous rumors, the foldable iPhone's inner display is expected to have a 14.1:10 aspect ratio with a 2,713 x 1,920 pixels resolution. However, contrary to DCS' previous reports that indicated a 7.8-inch inner display, the latest rumor suggests a slightly smaller 7.58-inch panel for the foldable. If true, this would be noticeably smaller than the 8.2-inch display we expect to see on the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7. Apple also approaches a more rectangular layout, similar to iPad models, compared to the squarish design on foldables from brands such as Samsung, OPPO, HONOR, etc. The leaker also hints at dual 48MP cameras expected to be seen on the iPhone Fold, presumably, on the back side. The utility of each of these cameras and the resolutions of the two front-facing cameras — on the cover screen as well as the one rumored to be under the inner display — remain unclear. The iPhone 16 Pro also features two 48MP cameras, including the primary and ultrawide, alongside a 12MP periscope. We suspect Apple might ditch the periscope to save space on the Fold, though it's too early to comment on whether the 48MP sensors are the same as those on the iPhone 16 Pro or different. In comparison, Samsung is likely to deploy a 200MP camera on the upcoming Fold 7. DCS reiterates the existence of a mysterious 'amorphous metal glass composite' (from Google Translate) material, previously also referred to as a 'liquid metal,' that will be used in the hinge, along with titanium for the external frame. As per previous rumors, the foldable iPhone is set to have an introductory price between $2,000 and $2,500. Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also recently stated that while the foldable is expected to launch in the second half of 2026, supposedly alongside the iPhone 18 series, this won't be an annual release, and Apple expects to sell the same model for multiple years, given its higher pricing compared to the candy bar iPhone models. However, Apple's contracted manufacturer, Foxconn, has yet to start producing prototypes. When it does in the coming months, we may see changes related to the iPhone Fold's specifications. Got a tip? Forget Galaxy Fold Ultra — here's what Samsung needs to reveal at Unpacked
For nearly the past year, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 has been one of my daily drivers. That's because it's a powerhouse that can handle my work-life balance with its excellent cameras, long battery life to get me through work, and the entertainment value it offers with its expansive 7.6-inch main display. It also works well as a desktop PC replacement thanks to Samsung DeX. Samsung's tipped to reveal a much improved version of its book-style foldable phone at its upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event on July 9. What's unusual about this year's upcoming notebook style foldable is the amount of teasers that the company has dropped so far. Not only is it expected to be one of the thinnest foldable phones around, but it's also going to be getting bigger AI camera upgrades. All of this is hyping up what's presumably going to be called the Galaxy Z Fold Ultra, but I think Samsung could be missing a huge opportunity by not doing the same for the Galaxy Z Flip 7. Here's why. Even though the Galaxy S25 Ultra is the best phone you can get, thanks to its outstanding overall performance and utility, I would love to see it transformed into a flip-style phone. If Samsung were to give the same 'ultra' treatment it's been teasing with the forthcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7, the Z Flip 7 could be the phone to beat. But it wouldn't be just taking the existing design and making it fold. Instead, it should get the same ultra-thin construction that Samsung's been teasing — perhaps to the same degree as what I've seen with the Galaxy S25 Edge. And finally, it should get the same camera treatment consisting of a 200MP main camera, an ultrawide, and a telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom. If you've ever watched the 2013 Spike Jonze directed film 'Her,' then you're aware about Samantha and how it's what all of today' AI chatbots strive to become. I've been using Gemini Live ever since it debuted with the Pixel 9 series last year and I think an Ultra version of the Galaxy Z Flip 7 could finally be the perfect embodiment of Samantha. Gemini Live lets me tap my phone's camera to see what I'm seeing and ask Gemini questions. Since the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is a flip-style phone, I could see myself putting the phone in my shirt pocket in such a way that only the one half of the phone with the outer screen hangs off the sleeve. t's like how Joaquin Phoenix's character in the film carries around Samantha in his shirt pocket, giving the AI assistant access to see the world and interact with it in a more natural way. I wouldn't be able to do this with a book-style foldable phone like the Galaxy Z Fold 7. One thing that annoys me about notebook-style foldables is that they're no easier to handle, even when they're closed and just relying on their outer screens. After testing out the Motorola Razr Ultra (2025), it proves yet again how the outer screens in flip-style phones are underrated. All of today's phones are simply too big to comfortably handle with one-handed use, which is why I often default to the outer screen with my Razr Ultra (2025) when I'm waiting to reach my subway stop. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is tipped to come with an even larger 4-inch cover screen, which I think could benefit from having full apps support by default — rather than burying the feature. Since it would get the 'ultra' treatment, it would be even better if the camera app is unlocked to leverage more of the manual controls that's available when the phone's opened. Right now, camera controls are limited to the basics and you can't select the option to shoot in 4K. That's why it would be even better if an 'ultra' version could give me these controls and much more. In my Galaxy Z Flip 6 review, I explicitly said how I was disappointed to find out that it doesn't support Samsung DeX. The feature has proven to be a lifesaver countless times in the past year wherever I left my laptop at home, by connecting the Galaxy Z Fold 6 to my work monitor — essentially giving me that desktop experience. I'm not hopeful that Samsung will bring it to the Galaxy Z Flip 7 either, but I think it would be an extra incentive for an Ultra model. Considering how Google has been collaborating with Samsung to bring a desktop mode with Android 16, it would be also better if Samsung upgrades DeX to be even more powerful.

Your iPhone has essentially made physical boarding passes unnecessary, and now Apple wants to do the same thing for driver's licenses, with a digital version on Apple Wallet that people can use for identify verification or getting through airport security. Right now, a select number of states currently allow you to add your driver's license to Apple Wallet. People that enable the feature in Apple Wallet will be able to use their iPhones to get through TSA checkpoints at airports for a much snappier security experience. It's going to take some time before all states have a digital ID system up and running. Below, we'll cover what states currently support digital IDs via Apple Wallet and how to add one to your iPhone. Only a handful of states support digital IDs in Apple Wallet. One key factor is how each state implements its Mobile Driver's License system. For instance, Louisiana, New York, Utah and Virginia all support mobile driver's licenses but require separate apps for digital IDs. States and regions that support digital IDs in Apple Wallet: Arizona California Colorado Georgia Hawaii Iowa Maryland New Mexico Ohio Puerto Rico Some states were originally announced to support Apple's digital ID, but haven't quite got there yet. The number of states supported in Apple Wallet is about half of what the TSA currently allows. Collectively, it accepts digital IDs across Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet and state-based mobile apps in 15 states. How to add your ID or driver's license to Apple Wallet If you live in a state that supports digital IDs for Apple Wallet, it's easy to add it. After it's added, you'll need to verify your identity, which can take a little longer, but is still a straightforward process. Open Apple Wallet . . Tap the Add button. button. Tap Driver's License or ID and select your location. If applicable, choose whether you want to add your ID to your iPhone only or both your iPhone and your Apple Watch. Follow the steps to scan your license or ID. (Make sure you scan your ID in a well-lit environment and the photo is in focus.) Once it's scanned, you'll be prompted to confirm your identity with a selfie photo. According to Apple, you may be asked to complete a number of facial or head movements for identification purposes. To ensure an easier verification process, Apple suggests that you: Stand in front of a plain background with neutral, light paint. Be in a well-lit area, ideally indoors. Take off sunglasses, masks, hats or other accessories that could block your face. Hold your iPhone steady. When you're finished, submit your information by confirming with Touch or Face ID. Your biometrics will be bound to the ID, so only you can use it. Transferring your digital ID to another iPhone If you upgrade your iPhone, you'll need to transfer your ID or driver's license to it. During initial setup, tap Wallet . . Select your ID. Follow the steps. Tap to confirm you want to move your driver's license or ID to the new device. Digital passports are coming to Apple Wallet with iOS 26 Creating a digital ID from your physical passport is coming to your iPhone later this year. Apple/Screenshot by CNET While states are taking time to implement digital ID systems, Apple announced a new feature coming in iOS 26 later this year: You can add a digital passport to Apple Wallet. When that feature is available, iPhone users will be able to scan their passports to create a digital version for identity verification during domestic travel. You won't be able to use it for international travel, and it's not a full replacement for a physical passport (so keep your physical one on you), but it should work at the 250-plus supported TSA checkpoints. During its WWDC keynote earlier this month, Apple said that the digital ID made from your passport can also be used "in apps and in person," but it didn't give any specifics. This is essentially what can be done on Android through Google Wallet. Apple Wallet ID verification could make ordering alcohol easier Also headed to iPhones this fall is an easier way for you to prove your age using your digital ID. Say you want to have a bottle of wine sent to your place via Uber Eats. Typically, when the driver arrives, you'll need to present your ID and have it scanned to complete the transaction, but with the new Verify with Wallet, your stored digital ID will be used to verify your age. (I do wonder if things might get more complicated when the delivery arrives if you're not the one receiving it.) Verify with Wallet will be supported by Chime, Turo, Uber Eats and U.S. Bank.
