Forget Galaxy Fold Ultra — here's what Samsung needs to reveal at Unpacked
For nearly the past year, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 has been one of my daily drivers.
That's because it's a powerhouse that can handle my work-life balance with its excellent cameras, long battery life to get me through work, and the entertainment value it offers with its expansive 7.6-inch main display. It also works well as a desktop PC replacement thanks to Samsung DeX.
Samsung's tipped to reveal a much improved version of its book-style foldable phone at its upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event on July 9.
What's unusual about this year's upcoming notebook style foldable is the amount of teasers that the company has dropped so far. Not only is it expected to be one of the thinnest foldable phones around, but it's also going to be getting bigger AI camera upgrades.
All of this is hyping up what's presumably going to be called the Galaxy Z Fold Ultra, but I think Samsung could be missing a huge opportunity by not doing the same for the Galaxy Z Flip 7. Here's why.
Even though the Galaxy S25 Ultra is the best phone you can get, thanks to its outstanding overall performance and utility, I would love to see it transformed into a flip-style phone. If Samsung were to give the same 'ultra' treatment it's been teasing with the forthcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7, the Z Flip 7 could be the phone to beat.
But it wouldn't be just taking the existing design and making it fold. Instead, it should get the same ultra-thin construction that Samsung's been teasing — perhaps to the same degree as what I've seen with the Galaxy S25 Edge. And finally, it should get the same camera treatment consisting of a 200MP main camera, an ultrawide, and a telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom.
If you've ever watched the 2013 Spike Jonze directed film 'Her,' then you're aware about Samantha and how it's what all of today' AI chatbots strive to become.
I've been using Gemini Live ever since it debuted with the Pixel 9 series last year and I think an Ultra version of the Galaxy Z Flip 7 could finally be the perfect embodiment of Samantha.
Gemini Live lets me tap my phone's camera to see what I'm seeing and ask Gemini questions. Since the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is a flip-style phone, I could see myself putting the phone in my shirt pocket in such a way that only the one half of the phone with the outer screen hangs off the sleeve.
t's like how Joaquin Phoenix's character in the film carries around Samantha in his shirt pocket, giving the AI assistant access to see the world and interact with it in a more natural way.
I wouldn't be able to do this with a book-style foldable phone like the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
One thing that annoys me about notebook-style foldables is that they're no easier to handle, even when they're closed and just relying on their outer screens. After testing out the Motorola Razr Ultra (2025), it proves yet again how the outer screens in flip-style phones are underrated.
All of today's phones are simply too big to comfortably handle with one-handed use, which is why I often default to the outer screen with my Razr Ultra (2025) when I'm waiting to reach my subway stop.
The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is tipped to come with an even larger 4-inch cover screen, which I think could benefit from having full apps support by default — rather than burying the feature.
Since it would get the 'ultra' treatment, it would be even better if the camera app is unlocked to leverage more of the manual controls that's available when the phone's opened.
Right now, camera controls are limited to the basics and you can't select the option to shoot in 4K. That's why it would be even better if an 'ultra' version could give me these controls and much more.
In my Galaxy Z Flip 6 review, I explicitly said how I was disappointed to find out that it doesn't support Samsung DeX. The feature has proven to be a lifesaver countless times in the past year wherever I left my laptop at home, by connecting the Galaxy Z Fold 6 to my work monitor — essentially giving me that desktop experience.
I'm not hopeful that Samsung will bring it to the Galaxy Z Flip 7 either, but I think it would be an extra incentive for an Ultra model. Considering how Google has been collaborating with Samsung to bring a desktop mode with Android 16, it would be also better if Samsung upgrades DeX to be even more powerful.

Google Photos merges classic search with AI to speed up results
After Google temporarily paused the rollout of its buggy AI-powered 'Ask Photos' feature in Google Photos, the company announced that it has improved the feature's ability to quickly return search results. The AI feature, first introduced at Google's I/O developer conference last year, allows users to search across their collection of digital photos using natural language queries. Leveraging Google's Gemini, Ask Photos taps into the AI's ability to understand a photo's content and its other metadata when responding to input. However, users complained the AI feature wasn't reliable and was often slow to respond while the AI was 'thinking.' Addressing these concerns, Google Photos product manager Jamie Aspinall wrote on X earlier in June that 'Ask Photos isn't where it needs to be, in terms of latency, quality and ux,' and noted the rollout would be paused for a couple of weeks while Google worked to bring back the 'speed and recall of the original search.' Screenshot In a short blog post published on Thursday, Google says it's bringing the best of Photos' classic search feature into Ask Photos, particularly for simple searches like 'beach' or 'dogs.' This allows the search results to display more quickly, as classic search did before. The AI, in the meantime, will work in the background to find the most relevant photos and work to answer more complex queries. For instance, if you search for a photo of a 'white dog,' a series of initial search results immediately appear. After the AI finishes its analysis, its results will appear below, along with some introductory text that may identify your dog by name, if you've added it, and tell you when photos of the animal first appeared. The interface still allows you to switch to classic search if you prefer. As a result of these changes, Google has now resumed the rollout of Ask Photos to more people across the U.S. To be eligible to use Ask Photos, you must be 18 or older, and your account language must be set to English. You must also enable Face Groups, the feature that labels the people and pets found in the Google Photos library.

Gemini is getting ready to replace Google Assistant on Android
Android users will soon be able to let Gemini control device features and apps with fewer privacy concerns. In an email seen by Android Police, Google recently notified Gemini users that it will start rolling out an update on July 7th that allows the AI bot to 'use Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and Utilities on your phone, whether your Gemini Apps Activity is on or off.' Disabling the Gemini Apps Activity setting stops conversations with the chatbot from being used to 'provide, improve, develop, and personalize' Google products and AI models. It also currently prevents users from asking Gemini to perform tasks in connected apps, such as setting alarms, calling contacts, sending WhatsApp messages, and controlling media playback settings. The vague wording of Google's message initially raised some confusion around whether the change would give Gemini unrestricted access to private data or system functions. Google later clarified that Gemini's app connections can still be disabled at any time, and that the update 'is good for users.' 'They can now use Gemini to complete daily tasks on their mobile devices like send messages, initiate phone calls, and set timers while Gemini Apps Activity is turned off,' Google said in a statement to Android Authority. 'With Gemini Apps Activity turned off, their Gemini chats are not being reviewed or used to improve our AI models.' The incoming change means that people can use Gemini like a personal assistant for their device without contributing to Google's AI training datasets, just in time for Gemini to actually replace Google Assistant on Android devices later this year. Turning Apps Activity off will also stop Gemini interactions from appearing in the activity log, though Google notes it will still save conversations for up to 72 hours for security purposes, regardless of whether the setting is disabled or not.

I measured the Galaxy S25 Edge. It's as thick as X credit cards.
This year will be remembered as the year that smartphones got thinner and lighter. The trend kicked off with the world's thinnest folding phone, the Oppo Find N5, in January, and it was quickly followed by the Tecno Spark Slim Concept phone. Before both of these, Samsung teased its long-awaited entrant into the ultra-thin phone market, the Galaxy S25 Edge, alongside the launch of the Galaxy S25 Ultra in January. Fast forward almost half a year, and the Galaxy S25 Edge is now on sale, several months before Apple is expected to launch the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air. Recommended Videos The biggest draw for these ultra-thin products is how much slimmer they are than regular smartphones, but how thin is the Galaxy S25 Edge? I've previously noted that holding is believing, and you need to hold the Galaxy S25 Edge to truly appreciate it, but how does it compare to other phones, as well as regular household items you may be familiar with? I measured it to find out. What the numbers say By the numbers, the Galaxy S25 Edge measures 5.8mm thick at its thinnest point, although the camera bump does increase this somewhat. By comparison, most smartphones are between 1.5mm and 3.5mm thicker, which may not sound like much, but is quickly apparent in the hand. By comparison, this is just one gram more than the base Galaxy S25, despite the S25 Edge being 1.4mm thinner and having a 200MP primary camera. Regarding the camera, it's worth noting that Samsung has included the same 200MP primary camera found in the Galaxy S25 Ultra. However, the sensor in the Edge is approximately 20% smaller to accommodate the thinner design. As a result, there are debates over whether it is as good as the larger version. Nonetheless, the Galaxy S25 Edge camera is more than capable of taking great photos. Another area that the thickness directly impacts is the battery, and here's where the Galaxy S25 Edge battery surprised me. The 3,900 mAh battery is smaller than its namesake siblings, but we tested the best battery life on a smartphone, and the Galaxy S25 Edge performed better than expected. Those trade-offs aside, how thin is the Galaxy S25 Edge? Let's find out! Galaxy S25 Edge vs other smartphones It's quite likely that you're reading this on a smartphone, so how does the Galaxy S25 Edge compare to the key competition, both in the US and beyond? I have many of the best phones, so I compared the Galaxy S25 Edge to them, and here's what I found. The specs of the Galaxy S25 Edge show it to be a mix of the rest of the Galaxy S25 lineup, and that's also apparent when you consider the size. It weighs 162 grams, which is 1 gram less than the Galaxy S25. However, it features the same screen size as the Galaxy S25 Plus and the primary camera as the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Talking of the Ultra, the 200MP camera on the Edge is the ideal solution for those who want the camera capabilities of the Ultra without the thickness necessitated by the two telephoto lenses. The closest smartphones to the Galaxy S25 Edge in terms of price and market positioning are the Apple iPhone 16 Pro and the Pixel 9 Pro. Both cost $999, $100 less than the S25 Edge, but are considerably thicker. The iPhone 16 Pro measures 8.3mm, while the Pixel 9 Pro measures 8.5mm. Both are also significantly heavier, weighing 199 grams, compared to the S25 Edge's 163 grams. Galaxy S25 Edge vs ultra-thin foldable phones Samsung and Apple will widely be credited with kickstarting the ultra-thin smartphone era this year, but it's worth noting that some phone makers have been pushing the boundaries of folding phone thickness for a few years. Earlier this year, Oppo launched the Find N5, which holds the current record at 4.21mm thick when unfolded and 9mm when folded. However, Honor is set to go even thinner with the upcoming Honor Magic V5. The Galaxy S25 Edge is thicker than these two phones, but not as noticeably so as a regular smartphone. At 163 grams, the Galaxy S25 Edge is also considerably lighter than the Find N5 and Magic V3, which weigh 229 grams and 230 grams, respectively. However, it's worth noting that the Find N5 feels just as light as the Galaxy S25 Edge thanks to the choice of materials and the weight being dispersed over a larger surface area. This brings us to the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7, which is rumored to break the records again. The current Galaxy Z Fold 6 is just slightly thinner than the Galaxy S25 Edge at 5.6mm when unfolded, but folded, it's over twice as thick at 12.1mm. Samsung has taken note of the competition, and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is expected to be significantly thinner, measuring between 3.9mm and 4.2mm when unfolded and approximately 9mm when folded. If you want the Galaxy S25 Edge for its slim body but also desire a folding phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 could be the one to consider. It's less than two weeks away, and I'm already giddy with excitement. Galaxy S25 Edge vs credit cards, AirTags, and more. Of course, these are just some of the phones that you may be using, so if you're not used to the size and thickness of those phones, how does the Galaxy S25 Edge compare to something in your home? Cycling through the gallery, the Galaxy S25 Edge is as thick as five and a half credit cards, six standard thickness Moo business cards, or a single Apple AirTag. The latter was an interesting find, as the thickest part of the AirTag is virtually identical to the thinnest part of the Galaxy S25 Edge. I'm eager to see the new Honor Magic V5, Galaxy Z Fold 7, and Z Flip 7 in the coming weeks, as each is expected to push the boundaries of thinness in the best folding phones. Then, we'll see what Apple can do as the iPhone 17 Air rumors suggest it'll be 5.4mm thick, or 0.4mm thinner than the Galaxy S25 Edge, but with one fewer camera. Welcome to the ultra-thin era.
