The Resident cast share poignant tributes to Malcolm-Jamal Warner after Netflix star's sad death

Daily Record22-07-2025
The Resident stars have been paying tribute to Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who has tragically died at the age of 54.
Malcolm-Jamal Warner, famed for his portrayal of Theo Huxtable in The Cosby Show and AJ Austin in The Resident, has died at 54. The actor tragically drowned on Sunday close to Cocles beach in Limon, Costa Rica, according to Costa Rican National Police.

Warner's devastating death, which authorities confirm resulted from asphyxia due to accidental drowning, has prompted moving tributes from his The Resident colleagues. The medical drama initially aired on Fox from 2018 to 2023, before finding fresh success with international audiences when it launched on Netflix last year.

Multiple leading stars from the programme, who worked closely alongside Warner, have released touching statements honouring the late actor. Distinguished surgeon AJ Austin made his debut in the show's first series, becoming a main character in the second season and remaining until the programme concluded with its sixth series.

Emily VanCamp, who portrayed Nic Nevin in the hospital drama, posted on Instagram with a monochrome photograph of the pair, reports the Mirror.
She captioned the photo: "I'm not sure I have the words to express what a gift it was to know you and to work with you. Your thunderous laugh, the bear hugs, our chats about love, family and life.

"A true family man with so much integrity and an endlessly generous spirit. You walked the walk my friend. Sending all my love to your beautiful family and all of those who knew you and were close to you. Beyond heartbroken."
Shaunette Renée Wilson, whose character Dr. Mina Okafor had a close relationship with Warner's character AJ during the show's run, also took to Instagram to share a still of them both in their medical uniforms.
She wrote: "Last week I had the impulse to text you for one of our lengthy heart check-ins. I truly wish I had so that one of the last words I had of you were of your wisdom, kindness, and that uncanny ability you had to be both unserious and profound within a single sentence.

"I'm beyond heartbroken. You were such a dear friend to me. My heart goes out to the family and loved ones he leaves behind. I cannot conceive the amount of grief with such a tragedy. Rest in Power, Malcolm. It was a joy to be Mina to your AJ. I will miss you deeply."
Meanwhile, Devon Pravesh actor Manish Dayal posted a clip of Warner addressing an audience about his experience of growing up in the public eye.

He captioned it with a heartbroken emoji and added: "Bro, I wish I had the words... You always did."
Barrett Cain actor Morris Chestnut also posted a moving tribute to the late star, featuring photographs and a video of their scenes together.
He wrote: "Heartbroken to hear about the passing of Malcolm-Jamal Warner. Working alongside him on The Resident was an honour.
"He brought so much depth, warmth, and wisdom to every scene and every conversation. One of the nicest in the business. Rest easy, brother. Your legacy lives on."

The distressing scenes on the show caused domestic abuse charity Women's Aid to speak out about Brad's behaviour. During her time on the show, she showcased caramel-coloured locks with blonde dipped highlights. Off air, Shona then found love with fellow MAFS UK star and Adrienne Naylor's TV husband Matt Pilmoor. On the reunion show earlier this year, she sported a lighter ashy blonde shade as Matt "proposed" to her with a promise ring. Now she has revealed her full grey shoulder-length style. An Instagram post showcased her poker-straight locks from different angles, and in the caption she wrote: "24 hours getting used to my new hair eeek!! "Swipe all the way to the end for the before. @alicealiciahair. "This is my reality I have sooo many greys so I'm really trying to work with it & not against it. "We decided to go for the chop to get rid of the warmth and go more ashy then leaving my greys to blend." MAFS star rushes herself to hospital after pus begins oozing from her very puffed up eye Staying candid, she added: "It's taking me a while to get used to because I've never been this short or cool toned before but I love my little grey bits at the front sparkling through! Xoxo." Earlier this month, shew gave fans an update on her hair journey and said: "8 months of embracing being a grey haired girlie." OPENING UP It came a year after she opted for a more natural look and dissolved her face fillers. The Nottingham-based screen star has kept fans in the loop with her journey and recently confided she was "stripping it all back so I can heal." Mafs couples that have stood the test of time Loved-up Tayah Victoria and Adam Aveling of series six fame had the first Mafs baby. The pair couldn't keep their hands off each other on the programme and quickly found their feet in the outside world, moving into Adam's Doncaster home. Just 18 months after meeting, the couple welcomed their daughter Beau. Season five couple Michelle Walder and Owen Jenkins also managed to make their marriage work away from the cameras and had their first child in December. Teacher Michelle, 29, has no regrets about taking part in the experiment. She told us: 'I just feel very lucky and thankful that it has worked out - and excited for everything to come.' Michelle and Owen were both sick of dating apps when they applied in 2019. Owen recalled: 'I had been out for some drinks with a friend after work. "While he was out for a cigarette I was scrolling on Instagram waiting for him to come back in. 'The MAFS advert was the last thing I saw, and I joked, 'Wouldn't it be funny if I signed up?' 'A few beers later when I was back at home I sent in the application, and the rest is history.' Another couple to make Mafs UK history is Zoe Clifton and Jenna Robinson. Despite a slight rocky start, where they clashed over Jenna's vegan lifestyle, the show's first same sex pairing are still going strong. They even have a successful podcast together called Life With a Pod. Jenna shed light on being involved in the show earlier this year when she told us: "We're not legally married, and I never felt like we were. I definitely feel the process makes you take the relationship a lot more seriously and having the help of the experts… if you can survive that process it sets a firm foundation for a long-lasting relationship." Shona added: "The no make-up thing as I've got older hasn't been a big thing for me because I'm not actually that good at make up to make myself look that different but no fake tan??? "I find that the hardest. It's how I felt at first when I dissolved my over done filler last year & got rid of my hair extensions. "Sooo naked. But you're not naked, you're just you. It's about loving yourself through all stages. "I haven't even plucked my eyebrows or waxed my upper lip & it's not about letting myself go, it's about letting myself be. "It's all part of the healing. Unfiltered, unedited, unafraid with my lil greys, eczema & acne spots. We just keep on riding the wave." Her body confident approach comes after she was rushed to hospital this summer when her eye puffed up after an allergic reaction. 7 Shona has been on a mission to embrace her greys for the past year Credit: Instagram 7 Shona told how she was embracing 'her reality' Credit: Instagram

How Molly-Mae Hague's viral parenting outburst has sparked deep tension with Fury family in-laws as bitter row brews

MULTI-millionaire Molly-Mae Hague built an empire off the back of her real-life relatability on social media - but her unfiltered honesty appears to have backfired following a recent breakdown. We can reveal those close to her partner Tommy Fury claim the 26-year-old's candid views on motherhood have ruffled feathers within his famous boxing family. 10 Molly-Mae Hague broke down in tears this week after her daughter's temper tantrum Credit: YouTube/MollyMae 10 The influencer with her boxer boyfriend Tommy and their daughter Bambi Credit: instagram 10 Dad of six John Fury with son Tommy Credit: PA Just months after the couple got back together following Love Island Tommy's booze battle, tension is said to be brewing over Molly-Mae's public struggles with parenting their daughter Bambi. The two-year-old's temper tantrum this week led reality star Molly to film herself breaking down in tears in despair. The 26-year-old cried 'I'm sorry, I'm so embarrassed' as she opened up about the "huge problems" she faces as a mum of one. But the heartfelt moment seems to have bothered her Irish Traveller in-laws who are more used to the no-nonsense attitude of Paris Fury - the wife of Tommy's boxing legend brother Tyson - who has seven children. A source told The Sun: "Within the Travelling community, having a big family with lots of children is the norm. "Tommy's relatives have been hopeful that he and Molly will have more children after getting back on track. "They care about her so much and are concerned, but also worried about how publicly she's venting about motherhood. "The family are used to Paris's attitude of being able to work, run the house and bring up her seven kids with Tyson without complaint. "Molly voicing how difficult she's finding it is surprising. They've been reaching out to support her through this tough time. "Of course it's natural for Molly to share the good, the bad and the ugly with her fans - no matter what anyone says. Molly-Mae admits real reason she's not filming with Tommy Fury after breaking down in tears on camera "She is determined to open up fully to her followers, whatever the backlash, and encourage the family to see it from her perspective." Molly-Mae has previously said she is 'selfish' and is 'not cut out' to deal with the stresses of parenting. It's in stark contrast to Tommy's sister-in-law Paris who was praised for her resilience in the family's Netflix documentary, At Home with the Furys. Molly‑Mae herself has described the 35-year-old as "wonder woman", having formed a close bond as Fury WAGs. 10 Paris and Tyson Fury with their seven children Credit: Instagram/ parisfury1, 10 Tommy's dad John Fury and his mother Chantal Credit: Splash 10 Half-brothers Tyson and Tommy have different mums Credit: Instagram @tommyfury 10 Paris and Tyson with Molly and Tommy Credit: Instagram Sadly, Paris was left heartbroken in May 2024 when she miscarried her eighth child while six months pregnant, days before Tyson's highly-anticipated fight with Oleksandr Usyk. She had previously revealed plans to have 10 children with her heavyweight champion husband, admitting: "There are times when it's stressful, but I enjoy it. I like that kind of chaotic life." Meanwhile Molly's breakdown over her daughter's "terrible twos" followed furious backlash online about being "out of touch". The businesswoman was accused of 'moaning" after telling fans she's not done one "fun thing" this summer despite jetting off to Dubai, Disneyland Paris and Budapest. Addressing the upset as she sobbed about motherhood, Molly admitted: 'I'm trying so so hard to stay positive and have a really nice day but I feel like I need to keep my camera running all day so you can see… every single thing is a huge problem. 'I can't even get like socks and shoes on'. 10 Molly's openess about the realities of motherhood has ruffled feathers Credit: Instagram 10 She was at the end of her tether this week Credit: YouTube/MollyMae She added: 'I don't care who tells me I am out of touch with reality or all this stuff that's going on on TikTok at the minute, I don't care I'm not going to not talk about it.' She sobbed: 'We're at a little local farm near us and Zoe and Bambi have gone in, just to leave me to calm down for a minute.' Despite her comments seemingly causing upset, Molly has no intention of censoring herself when it comes to what she posts online. Loving fans have flooded her with messages of support to assure her she's not alone in how she's feeling. One said: "You are amazing. Truly. Please don't ever feel like a failure. You're doing your absolute best, and it shows. You're not alone — so many of us are just trying to survive each day. And that's enough. You're enough." Another added: "You are an amazing mum. All children go through these moments. Plus we have more sensitive days where everything can feel 100 times worse. You are not alone!! You are amazing." Someone else wrote: "Hey Molly, you're doing a great job. Everyone's personality is different and every mum handles their child in different ways. "Some mums wake up enjoying every minute, including the screaming and shouting and some despise it." Molly faced immense pressure to open up about her brief split from Tommy last year after he turned to alcohol to cope while injured from boxing. 10 Molly took Tommy back after his relationship with alcohol caused their split Credit: Instagram The Sun revealed the pair rekindled at a New Year's Eve party at Manchester United footballer Luke Shaw's home before Molly spoke out about their troubles weeks later in her Prime Video documentary, Molly-Mae: Behind It All. Our source added: "Molly is always unapologetically herself. "She's got a thick skin and can deal with what people throw at her. It's more important to Molly that she's authentic about how she's dealing with being a mum. "She's been through a lot in the past year and is just focused on her family. "Molly loves Bambi more than anything and who knows what the future will hold about having more kids." The Sun has reached out to Molly and Tommy's reps.
