USHL presents inaugural Gaudreau Award to Ethan Wyttenbach of Sioux Falls Stampede

NBC Sports12-04-2025

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The United States Hockey League on Saturday named Ethan Wyttenbach of the Sioux Falls Stampede the inaugural winner of the Gaudreau Award in honor of the late Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau.
The league established the award to pay tribute to the brothers who died last summer when they were struck by a car while riding their bicycles in their home state of New Jersey. Parents Guy and Jane Gaudreau surprised Wyttenbach in the locker room to deliver the news.
'This award was created to honor their legacy and to serve as a shining example of excellence, character, and heart both on and off the ice,' said USHL President and Commissioner Glenn Hefferan, who is also a New Jersey native. 'Johnny and Matthew left an immeasurable impact on the communities where they lived and played. They were not only exceptional players and teammates but, most importantly, extraordinary people. Their love for the game was only surpassed by their love for their families.'
Wyttenbach was Sioux Falls' top scorer this season despite missing time with an injury. Before getting hurt, he also led the team in community service hours. The league said he spent time filling food bags at Feeding South Dakota, served dinners at the St. Francis House and rung bells for The Salvation Army, along with school visits and youth hockey practices.

Pittsburgh Penguins hire new head coach to replace Mike Sullivan, 23rd in history

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Pittsburgh Penguins have named Dan Muse as the 23rd head coach in franchise history, aiming to turn the page with a leader known for developing talent and leading elite special teams in the NHL. Muse, 42, brings two decades of coaching experience to Pittsburgh, including five seasons as an NHL assistant with the New York Rangers and Nashville Predators. During his tenure, his teams won three division titles and earned two President's Trophies. Team officials cited Muse's success in player development and his ability to drive strong special teams performance as major factors in the hire. While in Nashville (2017-19), his penalty kill ranked fourth league-wide. He matched that consistency in New York from 2023 to 2025, helping the Rangers reach the NHL's top-tier in penalty kill success and net percentage. Muse has coached at nearly every level, winning championships in the NCAA, USHL, and with the U.S. National Team. He led Yale to a national title in 2013 and captured the USHL's Clark Cup with the Chicago Steel in 2017. He later headed USA Hockey's U18 program, guiding the team to gold at the 2023 World Championship. Originally from Canton, Massachusetts, Muse played four years at Stonehill College before transitioning to coaching. He and his wife, Maureen, have four children. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Team USA Wins Gold & Honours Johnny Gaudreau At 2025 World Championships

Team USA won the gold medal at the 2025 IIHF World Championships. After defeating Switzerland 1-0 in overtime, they snapped a 92-year drought without winning gold at the Worlds. When Team USA captain Clayton Keller went up to accept the trophy, he was joined by Columbus Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski, Buffalo Sabres' Tage Thompson, Nashville Predators' Brady Skjei and Vancouver Canucks' Connor Garland — all carrying a Gaudreau jersey. Advertisement They placed the jersey over the trophy in honour of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, who tragically passed away before the 2024-25 season. All year long, Team USA found ways to honour the Gaudreau brothers — including keeping Johnny's sweater hanging in his locker stall throughout the tournament. It's been a strong year for USA Hockey on the international stage, and it ended with a gold medal at the Worlds to finally end the 92-year wait. As mentioned, Werenski was part of the gold-winning team. That's exactly why he committed to going — he wanted to bring a gold medal back home before what will be a busy summer of weddings, including his own. Advertisement In the tournament, he finished with one goal and five assists for six points, was a +8, and had 21 shots on goal. Werenski will now shift his attention to his wedding.
