'Incredible' period drama fans can't stop talking about now streaming on BBC
Fans are going wild for the BBC drama, which tells the true story of landowner and industrialist Anne Lister - who was known as the first 'modern lesbian'
The passionate romance at the centre of Gentleman Jack has captured the imagination of audiences far and wide, set against the backdrop of the 1830s. Suranne Jones brilliantly portrays Anne Lister, a trailblazing landowner known as the 'first modern lesbian', with Sophie Rundle by her side as Anne Walker, bringing to life an electrifying on-screen partnership.
One review from Rotten Tomatoes reads: "This show continues to amaze everyone with how good it is. It was really nice and important to see Anne Lister's "dark side of the force" and the growth of Ann Walker. Once again, Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle presented us with wonderful performances. I'm so grateful for Gentleman Jack. I hope you don't stop believing how important this project is.."
Adapted from Lister's real diaries, comprising some five million words – much of which was penned in secret code – the series reveals her clandestine lesbian relationships. Only decrypted and transcribed since the 1980s, these diaries bring to light the hidden histories of same-sex couples, with Gentleman Jack laying bare the secrets of Lister's romantic endeavours for the audience to see, making it an essential watch according to fans.
A review says: "I can't say enough good things about this extraordinary series; one can only hope that we will get a Season 3. Sally Wainwright's intricate detail and dialogue, along with the remarkable cast, make this a must-see. Surrane Jones is a wonder, as are Sophie Rundle and Lydia Leonard. With a positive lesbian protagonist, it is a rare gem!".
The love story of the central couple unfolds in 1832, amidst the industrial revolution in West Yorkshire, showcasing Lister's business ventures alongside her romantic escapades. The episodes also delve into the restoration of Shidbden Hall, her family estate, and her relationships with her staff and family, reports the Express.
For over three centuries, the estate, which is open to the public, was under the stewardship of the Lister family, and it was Anne who spearheaded its extensive development, following the death of her aunt. In 1830, she engaged a local architect and enhanced the grounds with additions of a gothic tower, rock gardens and a boating lake.
"Everything about this show is absolutely brilliant," one viewer wrote. "I rewatched the entire first season before starting in on the second and thoroughly re-enjoyed it. Suranne Jones's performance is intoxicating, and in fact, every role has been cast with the perfect actor for the part. The production values are as good as anything I've seen, and I've seen many, many period shows in my time."
Initially debuting in 2019, the series' triumph spawned a second season, which premiered in 2022. In an interview with GLAAD preceding the second release, Jones stated: "It makes a difference to be telling important stories...to feel like you're making a mark with your work is wonderful."
The profound influence of Gentleman Jack on LGBTQ+ audiences stands out most, with viewers sharing their experiences of watching the show. A fan commented: "Perhaps the biggest twist on television these days is a front-and-centre, unapologetically lesbian storyline.
"The LGBTQIA+ audience is so appreciative and grateful for consistently respectful and beautiful storytelling, especially when it is so often pulled out from under our feet. This cast and crew did their homework, and it paid off in spades."

This is the surname of her ex-husband, Will Weston, whom she wed in 2019. Despite the pair splitting in 2021, she appears to have legally retained his last name. The throwback snap in question was about the day that Daisy gave birth to her third child last year with new partner, Anthony Huggins. The snap was of Daisy's hospital visit to give birth to her son Benji in which her full name - Daisy May Weston - could be seen written on the board behind her. The Sun exclusively revealed earlier this year that Daisy and Anthony were secretly engaged. Despite retaining her ex-hubby's last name, it seems that Daisy is ready to move on and acquire a new one. Best BBC comedies A BBC boss called on the industry to "save our sitcoms", but the corporation has a history of fantastic shows. We look back at some of the best to ever grace the screen. Fawlty Towers (1975-1979) - Only two series were made of the beloved institution. However, the cultural impact of the series starring John Cleese and Connie Booth spans decades. It follows rude and intolerant Basil Fawlty (Cleese) as he attempts to improve the reputation of his hotel. Only Fools and Horses (1981-2003) - The show was crowned by some as the best British sitcom of all time by a TV poll in 2004. Seven series were broadcast on BBC until 1991 with additional sporadic Christmas specials airing until 2003. Sir David Jason starred as ambitious market trader Derek "Del Boy" Trotter whilst Nicholas Lyndhurst played his younger half-brother Rodney. Set in working-class Peckham in south-east London, it follows the highs and lows of the lives of the Trotters', in particular their brazen attempts to get rich. Blackadder (1983 - 1989) - Four series were made of the iconic show, created by Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson. Each series spans a different historical period as anti-hero Edmund Blackadder (Atkinson) tries to better himself in each society. Accompanied by his dogsbody Baldrick (Tony Robinson), trouble always ensues. A TV poll in 2004 found that Blackadder was voted the second-best British sitcom of all time Absolutely Fabulous (1992 - 2012) - Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley star as failing PR guru Edina 'Eddie' Monsoon and alcoholic fashionista Patsy Stone. The pair embark on heavy-drinking sessions and abuse drugs in a desperate attempt to stay 'hip'. Eddie constantly chases bizarre fads and fails to lose weight whilst her disappointed and neglected daughter Saffy (Julia Sawalha) looks on. Little Britain (2003 - 2006) - The premise is simple. A sketch show which features different British people from all walks of life that are engaged in all sorts of comical scenarios. Starring Matt Lucas and David Walliams, the pair created iconic pop culture characters. Viewers loved obnoxious council estate teenager Vicky Pollard, morbidly obese scrounger Bubbles Devere, slimming coach Marjorie Dawes, despondent office worker Carol Beer, disgraced politician Sir Norman Fry, of course the iconic Lou and Andy! The Catherine Tate Show (2004-2015) - A sketch show starring the likes of Catherine Tate. She made iconic characters such as rowdy schoolgirl Lauren Cooper with her line 'Am I bovvered?'. Other characters featured Bernie the nurse, the aga saga woman, complaining couple Janice and Ray, and of course her infamous 'Nan', Joannie Taylor. The last character herself spawned multiple specials and even a movie. Gavin and Stacey (2007 - Present) The series tells the story of Gavin (Matthew Horne) and Stacey (Joanna Page). The pair embarked on an online and telephone romance for six months. But when they finally decide to be together properly, their friends and family get in the way. Ruth Jones and James Corden created the beloved show, which has been going for over a decade. The 2019 Christmas special was the most-watched comedy in 17 years and the most-viewed non-sporting event in a decade. 6 Daisy with first husband Will on their wedding day in 2019 Credit: Instagram 6 Daisy has become a comedy legend Credit: Getty

Eastenders actor suspended by BBC after making disabled slur
EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick has been suspended by the BBC after using a disabled slur on the set of Strictly Come Dancing. The 30-year-old star made the offensive comment during filming of the show's Blackpool week last November, according to the Sun on Sunday. He said he was 'deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused'. The BBC said that his language was 'entirely unacceptable and in no way reflects the values or standards we hold and expect' and took the step of suspending him. In video footage obtained by the publication the actor used the term 'm--------s' to describe residents of Blackpool. He was reported to be backstage during rehearsals with Wynne Evans, 53, when he made the comment, leading the opera singer to say: 'Oh my God.' Borthwick, in a statement, said: 'I want to apologise sincerely and wholeheartedly for the words I used in the video showing my reaction to making it through Blackpool week on Strictly. 'I am deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused. It is no excuse, but I did not fully understand the derogatory term I used and its meaning.' Borthwick added that he was 'deeply embarrassed'. Disability charity Scope called on the Eastenders actor to educate himself and reflect on what he had said. Warren Kirwan, the organisation's media manager, said: 'We hope he takes the opportunity to get to know the reality of disabled people's lives.' It comes after Evans was taken off the Strictly tour back in January following claims he made an inappropriate sexual comment. The opera singer was then told that his BBC Radio Wales contract was not being renewed following a four-month investigation. Evans then apologised for language that he called 'inappropriate and unacceptable'. The BBC said Evans was 'not returning to the mid-morning show on BBC Radio Wales and there are currently no plans to work with him'
