Home Run Derby enjoys 5% viewership bump, but ratings still lag
Monday night's event, won by Seattle's Cal Raleigh over Tampa Bay's Junior Caminero, averaged a 2.7 rating and drew 5.73 million viewers. That is up from the 5.45 million who tuned in for Teoscar Hernandez's victory last year.
However, both of those were down from the previous three years. The 2021 event won by the New York Mets' Pete Alonso drew 7.13 million viewers, followed by 6.88 million for Juan Soto winning the 2022 event while still with the Washington Nationals. Toronto's Vladimir Guerrero Jr. won the following year, drawing 6.11 million viewers.
This year was the second-least watched Derby since 5.524 million viewers watched Giancarlo Stanton win in 2016 while with the Marlins, according to the Sports Business Journal. The 2024 Derby was the least-watched during that span, but it also competed with the Republican National Convention.
Monday night's Derby peaked at 6.31 million viewers at 9:30 p.m. ET and was the most-watched program of the day across all of broadcast and cable television. ESPN2's "StatCast" version of the event was watched by 499,000 people.
For comparison, this year's NBA All-Star Game and the NFL's Pro Bowl Games each averaged 4.7 million viewers -- and Tuesday night's MLB All-Star Game is expected to easily outpace both.

With two outs, Luzardo walked three straight batters, including two that forced in a run, and then he surrendered the grand slam to Gonzalez, putting Boston in front 6-5. In the midst of the rally, Realmuto was unable to locate a foul pop that would have ended the inning. However, he made up for it in the eighth, belting a two-out home run to center against Aroldis Chapman to tie it at 6-6. Top USC hoops recruit Alijah Arenas to miss 6-8 months (knee)
July 24 - USC five-star recruit Alijah Arenas suffered a knee injury that will require surgery and keep him off the court between six and eight months, the university announced on Wednesday. Arenas, the son of former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas, had just returned to the practice court, having recovered from after a serious car accident in April. "Alijah is a tremendous worker, teammate, competitor and person," USC coach Eric Musselman said. "He is understandably disappointed that he will not be able to take the court to start the season, but his health is our No. 1 priority. We have no doubt that he will come back even stronger. We look forward to supporting him during this process." Arenas graduated from Chatsworth (Calif.) HS a year early to suit up with the Trojans, along with transfers Rodney Rice (Maryland) and Chad Baker-Mazara (Auburn). It was expected that the 6-foot-6 Arenas would form an explosive backcourt for USC. In April, Arenas lost control of his Tesla Cybertruck and ran into a tree. The car became engulfed in flames, but he was able to escape with assistance from bystanders. Arenas was placed in a medically induced coma due to smoke inhalation, but was released one week later. ESPN tabbed Arenas the No. 13 recruit in their Top 100. He scored more than 3,000 points in three seasons at Chatsworth, setting a CIF LA City Section record. Rapids move D Chidozie Awaziem to France's FC Nantes
July 24 - The Colorado Rapids transferred defender Chidozie Awaziem to FC Nantes in France's Ligue 1 on Wednesday. Awaziem, 28, had one assist over 20 games, all starts, this season for Colorado. The native of Enugu, Nigeria, had two assists in seven matches, all starts, for FC Cincinnati last season. "We're grateful to Chido for his time with the club this season," Rapids president Padraig Smith said in a statement. "We wish him nothing but success in this next chapter." Awaziem's assist this season came in a 3-2 victory against visiting San Diego FC on April 12.
