Italian athlete Mattia Debertolis collapsed during an orienteering event and passed away four days later.
During the ongoing World Games in Chengdu (China), an Italian athlete named Mattia Debertolis has died. The 29-year-old reportedly collapsed during orienteering event last Friday before being found unconscious by the organisers.
He passed away four days later on Tuesday with cause of his death still unknown.
In a statement, the World Games organisers said, 'Despite receiving immediate expert medical care at one of China's leading medical institutions, he passed away."
International Orienteering Federation (IOF) president Tom Hollowell issued a statement at the tragic loss of life.
'I am not able to adequately describe in words the unfathomable depth of sadness in this tragic loss of life. Our thoughts are with all who mourn Mattia. I encourage the global orienteering community to honor his memory," Hollowell said.
Debertolis, part of Italian Orienteering Federation's team at the World Games 2025, was taking part in the men's middle-distance event with temperatures rising above 30 degrees Celsius on August 8.
'In his childhood and youth years, Mattia was active both in orienteering, cross-country skiing and football. His love for navigating and finding the control points made him prioritize orienteering and pursue a career within elite orienteering," IOF said in a statement.
'Together with IWGA and the LOC in Chengdu, IOF will continue to support the family of Mattia Debertolis and has no additional comments at this time," it added.

Goalkeeper Donnarumma announces PSG exit after being left out of UEFA Super Cup match

Just hours after being left out of Paris Saint-Germain's squad for Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup final against Tottenham, star goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma posted a message saying he is leaving the club. When PSG named its squad for the match earlier on Tuesday, goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, who recently joined from Lille for just over €40 million ($46 million), was included along with backup goalies Matvei Safonov and Renato Marin. Chevalier's arrival was expected to signal Donnarumma's departure, with the 26-year-old Italy international unlikely to accept being No. 2 if coach Luis Enrique decided so. Donnarumma then posted a message in Italian, English and French on his Instagram account saying he had effectively been forced out. 'Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team's success," he wrote. "I am disappointed and disheartened.' He bade farewell to fans ahead of the new season. 'I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done,' Donnarumma said. 'I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights and of you, who made me feel at home.' Enrique explained why PSG signed Chevalier Donnarumma did not name the person who no longer wants him in the squad, but in a pre-match news conference, PSG coach Luis Enrique explained why he had signed Chevalier. 'These are always difficult decisions to make, I know. I can only say good things about Gigio (Gianluigi). He's one of the best players in his position, without a doubt, and he's even better as a person,' Luis Enrique said. 'We were looking for a different type of goalkeeper. And I repeat, it's always difficult to make a decision like that.' It is thought that Chevalier's superior passing from the back— which has been a noticeable shortcoming for Donnarumma — was a crucial factor in the decision. However, Donnarumma was arguably the best goalkeeper in Europe last season, playing a key role in PSG's Champions League success with inspired shot-stopping in the knockout stages. He also starred for Italy when it won the European Championship in 2021. Linked to Premier League But with one year left on his contract, Donnarumma had refused to sign a new contract and PSG was unlikely to let him leave for free at the end of the season. He has been strongly linked with a move to Premier League big-spender Manchester City, with Manchester United also reportedly interested. PSG experienced the same situation two seasons ago with Kylian Mbappé, who ended up joining Real Madrid on a free transfer after refusing to take up the option of a one-year contract extension. Donnarumma was in a similar position to Chevalier when he joined the club after helping Italy win the Euros. He replaced Keylor Navas as No. 1, even though Navas had been outstanding for PSG the previous season. Donnarumma's arrival at PSG was seen by fans as hugely unfair on Navas and a clumsy move by the club. Now the situation has come full circle for the Italy keeper, who finds himself in much the same position as Navas was. 'If he has to go, then we thank him from the bottom of our hearts,' PSG captain Marquinhos said. 'He has been a great leader all these years. Seeing Donnarumma leave would upset me.' PSG begins its league campaign at Nantes on Aug. 17.

All countries need not play Tests, scarcity is Test crickets friend: Greenberg

Melbourne, Aug 13 (PTI) Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg feels not all nations need to aspire to play Tests, given the financial burden it places on some of the weaker boards and said while there is no definitive number of Test-playing countries, 'scarcity in Test cricket is our friend, not our foe." Australia, which hosted a record-breaking Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the 2024-25 season, is set to welcome England for the Ashes later this year. Earlier this month, India and England concluded a highly competitive five-Test series, while Australia and New Zealand recorded lopsided victories against the West Indies and Zimbabwe respectively — outcomes that have reignited debate about the global structure of red-ball cricket. 'What I mean by that is, I don't think everyone in world cricket needs to aspire to play Test cricket and that might be OK. 'A lot of traditionalists might not like that (and) I'm not suggesting I know the number that will play, but literally we're trying to send countries bankrupt if we force them to play Test cricket." Emphasising the need for meaningful competition, he said: 'We need to make sure we invest in the right spaces, play Test cricket where it means something and has jeopardy. 'That's why the Ashes will be as enormous and as profitable as it is because it means something … it means something to every player. 'We've got to make sure when we play Test cricket that's at the top of our mind." The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently formed a working group to examine the Test format, and Greenberg expressed his willingness to consider new models, including a two-tier system. 'I've got an open mind to that question because I don't know the details to what a two-tiered structure would look like," he said. 'Test cricket needs an injection of capital and an injection of resources because it can't just be about Australia, India and England – it needs to be bigger than that. 'Red-ball cricket in this country, and in England and in India, is unbelievably successful but it's not like that in all parts of the world. 'It's incumbent on us to make sure we play our part to help, so the concept of tiers I think needs to be explored. I'm not prepared to say we're against something until we see all the details," he noted.
