KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 (Bernama) -- The ASEAN Work Plan on Youth serves as a strategic framework to address substantive issues, including political stability, economic, sustainability and climate change, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Considering the issues as a challenge, Anwar said it must be addressed as it is crucial for the younger generation.
In this regard, he urged ASEAN youth to be vocal, principled, and conscious of the demands of the times, as their engagement is vital in shaping the region's future.
"What is critical for the youth is to be effective in the expression, voice of conscience, and be aware of the demands of the times," he said in his opening remarks at the 4th ASEAN Leaders' Interface with Representatives of ASEAN Youth, here today.
Anwar said ASEAN leaders commended youth delegates at ASEAN's Interface session, reaffirming their commitment to youth empowerment and regional cohesion.
"I must express our profound thanks and appreciation. I'm also extremely sorry that we place so much hope on you, not only to represent your countries, but to form this very cohesive, strong ASEAN bond," he said.
According to Anwar, the success of ASEAN is due to the commitment of the bloc's leaders; and therefore, the young generation should learn and work closely with their leaders.
"It's just so comfortable to work with them, to communicate with them, to learn from them – and of course, because of this, we are able to decide fast and speedily," he said.
The 4th ASEAN Leaders' Interface with Representatives of ASEAN Youth was held as part of the ongoing 46th ASEAN Summit.

The report called on China and AseaN countries to ensure that the solutions of the South China Sea issues remain in their own hands, to adhere to sound principles and direction in addressing the issues, and to continue upholding the notion of a maritime community with a shared future. The report also called for joint efforts by China and Asean countries to build the South China Sea into a sea of peace, friendship, and cooperation that benefits the people of all regional countries. The think tank report has received positive evaluations from experts. They believe the report comprehensively explained China's practical achievements, insights, and pathways in advocating for the South China Sea to become a sea of peace, friendship, and cooperation, marking a significant academic contribution to the study of South China Sea issues. Zhang Jie, a research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, noted that the report not only offered historical depth but also summarised the latest developments in the South China Sea situation. It further clarified China's principled stance and comprehensively demonstrated China's positive contributions to the peace and stability of the South China Sea based on facts. Yang Xiao, a research fellow at the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, stated that the report, with a vision for a better future in the South China Sea, creatively explained and summarised China's consistent adherence to the principles on South China Sea issues. Those principles serve as the foundation for China-ASEAN dialogue, cooperation, and constructive development, carrying significant theoretical and practical importance for the future, consensus-building, and bridging differences. Ma Chao, associate research fellow at the Maritime Silk Road Research Institute of Hainan Normal University, believed that China, upholding the concept of a maritime community with a shared future, has deepened cooperation with parties in the South China Sea.
