
Road Freight Body Welcomes Steady Decline In Workplace Injuries
Data released by ACC shows that annual injury claims have fallen by 35 per cent between 2018 and 2025, showing a consistent decline in workplace injuries despite growth in the national freight task.
Transporting New Zealand is welcoming a decline in road freight transport workplace injuries, saying it shows industry commitment to health and safety improvements.
Data released by ACC shows that annual injury claims have fallen by 35 per cent between 2018 and 2025, showing a consistent decline in workplace injuries despite growth in the national freight task. Claims fell across all 16 regions, with Northland and West Coast recording the largest percentage drops (56 per cent and 54 per cent respectively).
There were 3,442 new claims in the road freight transfer industry in 2024/25, compared to 5,295 in 2017/18 – a reduction of 1,853 claims. Numbers declined year-on-year from 2018 to 2025.
Transporting New Zealand Chief Executive Dom Kalasih says the data is good news for road freight staff, businesses, and ACC levy payers.
'The data shows that road transport businesses are steadily improving workplace health and safety for its people, while moving more freight than ever.'
Kalasih says that the reduction is workplace injuries has been assisted by improvements in workplace culture, as well as technological improvements.
'In our 2025 National Road Freight Survey, the health, safety and wellbeing of staff was identified as one of the top three issues by 128 surveyed businesses. This data from ACC also indicates that road freight businesses and staff are making training, safe processes, and site and equipment design a priority.'
'Technological innovation will also be playing an important role, whether it's automatic chain throwing and tensioning systems on logging trailers that avoid soft tissue injuries, or fatigue management technologies that help ensure people aren't working while tired. Safety technologies can reduce physical strain on workers and mitigate safety risks, bringing injury rates down.'
Kalasih says that while the downward trend in workplace injuries is great news, there is more work that can be done.
'Transporting New Zealand would like to see these injury rates fall even further, and for injured people to be able to safely return to work sooner. The longer people spend away from their workplace, the less likely they are to successfully return to work.'

2025 Tesla Model Y RWD Review
A new look and even more minimalist interior along with extra power and range have sent EV enthusiasts on a Model Y bender. Despite Tesla share gloom overseas, the brand is doing okay here. Totals for the half year are down about 200 on 2024 but the Modeal Y is still the best selling EV (636 units). And that's mainly on the back of the newly facelifted model Y. In June, Tesla found new homes for 407 of them, showing pent-up demand for the newbie. The comprehensively facelifted Model Y is available as a base RWD variant or an AWD dual-motor option. Expect a Performance model soon too. Visually upbeat The RWD version you see here costs $70,224 including ORCs. The look is much improved with its new lightbars and hidden headlights below. They're of the matrix variety too, so can be left on full beam, 'dipping' automatically by turning off pixels. Bumpers at each end are reconfigured, with small air ducts up front to divert the air around the 19-inch alloys. These have black caps that Tesla claims reduce energy use by 2-3 per cent. At the rear is a new three-piece fifth door – evidently simpler to repair – and there's a small ducktail-style spoiler and a new diffuser. The original Model Y had a Cd of 0.23. This is now 0.22, adding a few kays of range. That's one of the lowest Cd figures for any SUV. Minimalist interior There are also significant interior changes. There's still the big 15.4-inch central touchscreen that commands all. The wheel is new, though the spokes are set a touch high, mandating a 10 to 2 hand position. It's comfy enough though, with adaptive cruise controls on the right side. Above there's a panoramic sunroof, with a silver coating to prevent overheating. Mirrors and steering column positioning you set in the central screen. Oddly it's the same for selecting gears. So the cabin is largely devoid of buttons, the only exceptions being on the wheel for the wipers and front camera (also a new feature). Push the wiper button once and a menu comes up on screen or you can cycle through the menu by repeated stabs of the button. It works okay but a rotating controller on the indicator stalk is so much simpler. Like a gear selector on a right wand would be… Most of the other stuff is relatively straightforward. The powered seat controls are in the conventional place – hooray – and the lumbar pump is solid. Seat ventilation is new, along with heating and there's a heated wheel too. Changing between the two drive modes is easy (chill=eco, standard=normal). Same essentially with recuperation, low or standard. We liked both. On tight stuff, standard is good, no brakes required. For other roads, low is fine, gently braking you almost to a halt. This has one of the best crawl modes I've ever encountered, so smooth. Autonomous drive works well too, though it does seem to favour the left side of any lane. Attempts at steering right often lead to ACC cancelling itself. Winter weather It was raining much of the time we had the new Model Y on test. There's a slippery driving mode that amps up the TC, and also prevents really heavy braking. You can stomp on the brake pedal and it doesn't seem to go near the ABS intervention point. Slip back to normal drive mode and regular brake transmission resumes. Clever stuff. So are the electronics; they intervene only when necessary. So you can press on even in the wet and this just responds faithfully. Helping is a low centre of gravity, an even weight split, and not too much of it, just over 1900kg, not bad for a sizeable EV. It is almost 4.8m in length, our model featuring a single, rear-mounted motor. There's generous luggage space up front (117L, and a drain for wet gear) and an equally larger underfloor hold at the back. You can store the magnetic cargo cover under there too if you want. We probably would – or just leave it in the garage – as it's quite sizable and makes viewing stuff at the front of the hold a little tricky. Anyhow, there's piles of room back there, with 854L when all seats are in use, and 2138L after splitfolding. There's generous leg and headroom for the folks in the back too. They get new heated seats and an eight-inch touchscreen to which you can pair two Bluetooth headsets. The split folding is a powered set-up, activated in three different ways. There's also an accessory Tesla mattress, should you choose to have a weekend away in the wilderness. It's that roomy inside! Ride and handling impress Tesla said the improvement in ride quality is palpable. That's soon evident – this is just outright pampering at urban speeds. It also flattens speed bumps effortlessly so long as you're not attacking them like a bull at a gate. The suspension isn't active but uses frequency dependent dampers. Hence, the comfy ride at urban speeds, and the firmer, controlled progress through corners. We appreciated the prompt turn in and good feedback at the helm, though the turning circle is nothing to write home about (12.1m). And from the driver's perspective there is great forward visibility, even if it's more restrictive out the rear window. The seating position and comfort are noteworthy, except for the hard edge against which your left knee rests. Build is sound, not an untoward noise to be heard. If you like minimalist interiors, this will appeal. There's not even a stop/start button. As to the numbers, the Rear Wheel Drive model features a 220kW motor (torque not state, estimated around 400Nm) powered by a 63kWh LFP battery pack, giving it a claimed 466km of range according to WLTP. Its sprint time drops by 1sec from the previous model (6.9 to 5.9sec, which we met). At no time did we feel this needed any more power. Overtakes are achieved easily, quickly. Add $10k for the Long-Range AWD variant ($80,224 drive away). This has a 78kWh NMC battery and a heap more grunt (336kW/639Nm). It is said to run 0-100 in 4.3sec. The claimed range is up a tich on its forebear at 551km. When either variant hooks up to a 250kW Supercharger, up to 283km can be added in 15min. There are evidently 28 Supercharger locations nationwide. On a wallbox, a 60 to 100 per cent recharge takes 4.5 hours. Teslas come with a four-year/80,000km warranty. Battery cover is over twice that. And Tesla has a mobile tyre repair service. Up with the best in class? Well yes, really. On road it's fast and fun. And inside it feels more premium than its asking price. That's perhaps partly a reflection of new acoustic glass and low rolling resistance rubber used; evidently it reduces wind and road noise by around 20 per cent. And the design is (mainly) clever too, particularly the amount of occupant and storage potential it offers. Rivals in this area include Leapmotor C10, Kia EV5, Ioniq 5 and BYD Sealion 7. Generalising they are either slower, more expensive or both. Inbound rivals include Smart #5 and Cupra Tavascan, among others. Most will love the base car but $10k seems not a lot for an upgrade to AWD and more pace and range. Why not indeed? Stricter sale regulations needed as alcohol harm costs soar
The report published in June 2024 estimated $9.1 billion total cost of alcohol harm based on disability-adjusted life years. It included costs associated with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD); alcohol use disorder; intimate partner violence (for alcohol use disorder only); child maltreatment (for hazardous drinking only); road crashes where alcohol was a factor; lost productivity associated with alcohol use, including FASD, crimes and workplace absenteeism; and health and ACC spending. Despite the sobering costs, it seems the Government may have bowed to pressure from the alcohol industry, with a leaked Cabinet paper revealing planned reforms to the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act have done a U-turn. Associate Justice Minister Nicole McKee had planned to reduce off-licence sales from the existing 7am to 11pm, making them legal from 9am to 9pm. She said that could have prevented 2400 violent crimes a year. But to the surprise of some, including the Salvation Army, later versions of the paper showed the reform would now focus on reducing the regulatory burden. The revised paper is due to go before Cabinet today. At the moment, some councils are developing local alcohol policies for their areas, including off-licence opening hours. Local alcohol policies in Auckland, Hastings and Christchurch are in place, with 9pm closing for off-licence sales. However, some other councils have put local alcohol policies in the too-hard basket, citing the cost involved and the threat of industry challenge. The alcohol industry and supermarkets have big money behind making it difficult for local authorities to compete with. For example, after three appeals, including one from supermarket giant Progressive Enterprises, Hamilton City Council ditched its local alcohol policy to change the hours alcohol can be sold. It had spent $200,000 on staff and legal time. While there is an argument for local decisions for communities, alcohol policies are placing a significant burden on councils in terms of time and cost. Most are simply not in a position to be able to take on the powerful alcohol lobby. Here's where the Government needs to step in and legislate on reduced off-licence hours. Twelve hours a day to buy booze is more than enough. No, opening off-licences later and closing them earlier won't stop alcohol-related harm but it can help to reduce it and ease some of the pressure on our health and justice systems, support agencies and even our local authorities. How ACC plans to manage the estimated $3.6b cost of compensation for abuse survivors
ACC chief executive Megan Main Photo: Supplied / ACC A significant number of abuse victims could be eligible for ACC compensation following a landmark court ruling that could cost it billions of dollars. But ACC will not immediately be contacting everyone it believes might be eligible, due to fears of retraumatising them and its case managers being overwhelmed. Advocates and a survivor fear the corporation is stalling to avoid paying out. The landmark Court of Appeal decision - TN vs ACC, issued in December 2023 - made more childhood abuse survivors eligible for financial compensation. ACC estimated it could affect 100,000 people and cost it $3.6 billion. Nearly two years since the decision was issued, ACC has decided how it will "fully implement" the ruling from 29 September. Anyone unable to work due to a mental injury arising from childhood sexual abuse can apply for weekly compensation, known as Loss of Potential Earnings (LOPE) payments. Previously, the date of injury for LOPE was the date they first sought treatment for a mental injury and this had to be before they were 18 years old. The 2023 TN vs ACC Court of Appeal decision removed the age limit and changed the date of injury to the date the abuse occurred. In the case of TN, the claimant was abused from the age of two but prevented from seeking help by her family, which meant she could not report the abuse before she turned 18. ACC applied interim measures while it worked out how it would "fully implement" the court decision. Last month, it estimated that about 262 people between June 2023 and April this year had been accepted for LOPE payments as a result of the case , totalling $50 million. At the time, TN's lawyer Beatrix Woodhouse questioned the small number and said many ACC clients were not being made aware they might now be eligible or could apply. Internal documents showed ACC had identified "significant numbers" of clients who were now likely to be eligible for LOPE, but it had decided not to proactively tell everyone. "To avoid unwanted or potentially traumatic contact and unnecessarily raising client expectations, we will only proactively approach clients where we can identify a reasonably high likelihood of LOPE eligibility," a March ACC board paper stated. Only clients with active sensitive claims would be approached to "reduce the risks of retraumatising clients who do not have active psychological support from ACC in place". A "trial screening" - carried out in February 2024 - identified 420 clients most likely to be eligible for compensation and further analysis found some were already undergoing assessments for compensation, while others were not entitled or did not wish to be considered, the paper said. Warren Forster Photo: RNZ / Ian Telfer "What ACC is effectively saying is 'we are not going to tell people that they might be entitled to this' even though they've got covered claims. "They've calculated there are thousands of people in this category and they've said they'll only approach 420. That's a concern. "In the context of political pressure on ACC to stop paying and indications from the minister that they might change this approach anyway, it seems like ACC is just stalling." It was not ACC's place to decide what would retraumatise clients and everyone who might be eligible for compensation should be notified, he said. In an interview, ACC chief executive Megan Main told RNZ it knew from experience that clients were likely to be impacted when contacted proactively to discuss financial entitlements. That was why it was taking a "phased approach" and taking its time "to get it right". "We've prioritised working with new clients and clients seeking reassessment who are, by reaching out, indicating they're ready." ACC would start to proactively contact clients it believed were most likely to be entitled to compensation next year. "We'll work with providers, the advocate groups, we'll learn from survivors themselves about how they're responding to this," said Main. The TN decision was difficult for ACC to implement, she said. "This is a significant and quite complex change to how we make decisions about financial entitlements … and these are some of our most vulnerable clients. "It's why we are treading carefully." ACC currently had 15,000 sensitive claims clients and around 800 open applications for LOPE, she said. An ACC client, who only wanted to be known as Lew, said the process of applying for LOPE itself was long and traumatising. Lew suffered from post traumatic stress disorder from being abused as a child in state care. He had never been able to hold down a job for long and now in his 30s was unable to work at all. He applied for LOPE in August last year after learning about the TN decision and has already gone through the two standard assessments to work out his eligibility, but the process was "traumatising" and "challenging", and had made his mental health worse. "This process with ACC has actually affected my mental health so bad that I cannot work at the moment. I'm fighting a multibillion dollar corporation and I don't have a cent." ACC told him in April that he needed a third assessment but due to a shortage of therapists this could not be done until October. He questioned why ACC was choosing not to contact clients it believed may be entitled to compensation. "They don't want to contact clients because they don't want to pay them out. They don't give a crap how traumatised these clients are, like myself, otherwise they would have sorted [my compensation] out." In a statement, ACC said multiple assessments were sometimes required which could be frustrating for clients. "The complexity of Lew's case has meant an additional medical assessment is also required. This will help us fully understand how his covered injury is affecting his ability to work," it said. For example, if someone abused as a child had been working, but then could no longer work due to the mental injury arising from that abuse, they currently may be receiving weekly compensation based on 80 percent of their earnings. Under TN, their weekly compensation may switch to LOPE, which was typically 80 percent of the minimum wage. Main said ACC would work with those negatively impacted to ensure they were supported. "So just to be clear, at the moment, we're not making any changes to any of those clients' existing financial entitlements, and we would expect to begin contacting those clients next year. "If we identify that this new court ruling might impact their existing financial entitlements, we'll let them know, we'll help them understand what it means for them, we'd make sure they've got support from their provider to move, to move through that, and that wraparound support is there." There was usually a four-week grace period for people switching between entitlements, but Main said ACC had not yet decided if this would apply to those left worse off by TN. ACC documents said a phased approach was needed to limit the impact on staff and providers. There was a "high risk" an influx of LOPE applications could put a strain on frontline resources, and staff could also be in the firing line as they bear the brunt of unhappy clients left worse off. High case loads of between 100 and 120 active cases per case manager meant some staff had not had the chance to discuss the potential impacts of the TN decision with clients. "There is a risk for vulnerable clients when their expectations are not met (and associated reputational risk for ACC) that will need to be managed through clear and effective communications."
