Montgomery County police honors fallen officers with memorial service
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) – Dozens gathered at the Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) headquarters Wednesday morning for the Fallen Heroes Memorial Service.
Attendees remembered 22 officers who died while serving Montgomery County.
'This is a challenging time of year for many of us,' MCPD Chief of Patrol Darren Francke said. 'We are reminded of the undeniable reality that individuals sacrificed their lives for this community, prioritizing their duty above all else.'
DC man pleads guilty in 20+ year Maryland murder cold case
Wednesday's ceremony honored fallen members of the MCPD, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and the Montgomery County Division of the Maryland-National Capital Park Police.
'Let today be a reminder of what our fallen officers stood for,' Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said. 'Integrity, service and the belief in protecting others is a worthy and noble pursuit.'
Each officer's name was read aloud, a candle was lit in their memory and yellow roses were handed out.
'I offer a very special thank you to the families and loved ones their friends, of those who we remember here today, tomorrow and throughout next week,' MCPD Chief Marc Yamada said. 'We offer our deepest sympathies and condolences.'

Confusion, concern around Dupont Circle ahead of big WorldPride weekend
WASHINGTON () — There's confusion and concern swirling around Dupont Circle ahead of WorldPride festivities this weekend. The National Park Service (NPS) announced Monday evening that the neighborhood's central park and fountain , but some D.C. leaders say that plan could be reversed. The park has been home to past Pride celebrations, some of which left behind large amounts of litter and damage. DC police recinds request to close Dupont Circle park during WorldPride after pushback from DC community The NPS said the move came at the request of the DC Police Department, and in efforts to stay in line with President Donald Trump's executive order to protect D.C. landmarks and monuments. Councilmember Brooke Pinto told DC News Now she spoke with Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Pamela Smith Tuesday morning and changed her mind. 'We talked about some of her safety concerns and asked her to reverse the decision to make sure that the space could be opened to the public. And I'm very grateful that she agreed to do so,' said Pinto. MPD shared Smith's letter rescinding her request for non-scalable fencing and closure of the park Tuesday afternoon, though the letter acknowledges the final decision on the park's status this weekend lies with the NPS and U.S. Park Police (USPP). Man seen tearing down Dupont Circle Pride decorations; DC police investigating Confusion surrounding the Circle itself comes as D.C. Police are looking for someone who there Monday night. Video filmed Monday evening and shared with DC News Now shows a man tearing down Pride decorations in Dupont Circle. Caleb Files was on a run in the neighborhood when he noticed what the man was doing, started recording and shared the clip on social media. 'Silence is complicity. In a time like this, I really wanted to make sure that we were showing the hate that people have in their hearts. And it's sad, as we're facing WorldPride, and it's supposed to be a time for everybody to feel welcome here in the District,' said Files. Files said he told nearby police officers about what he saw and showed them the video. He said officers immediately began to search for the man and investigate. MPD told DC News Now it is investigating the incident as a destruction of property crime with hate and bias against the LGBTQ community. 'I hope that, if you have hate in your heart, that you can find something that overcomes that hate; we are not a hating people. Queer people need to be visible, especially in a time like this,' said Files. DC News Now saw crews with the Dupont Circle BID replacing the banners on Tuesday. Neighbors said their Pride celebrations and decorations will not be swayed. 'It was upsetting at first,' said one neighbor. 'As I am walking down the street, I just see joy everywhere. One little bad apple tears down one poster, a new poster is going to go up the following day.' 18-year-old charged for kidnapping woman in Montgomery County
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — An 18-year-old man from Burtonsville is facing charges related to a kidnapping that spanned two counties in Maryland. The Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) said that on June 1, around 6:25 p.m., officers responded to Wexhall Drive and Greencastle Road for a reported kidnapping. Witnesses reported seeing a man grab a woman and force her into a sedan before driving off. As they left, the victim managed to throw her purse out of the car's window. Officers found the purse and learned who the victim was through her ID. They soon identified the suspect as 18-year-old Joel Akakpo. Man seen tearing down Dupont Circle Pride decorations; DC police investigating Soon after, the Prince George's County Police Department (PGPD) got a call for a 'suspicious situation' involving the same sedan on Flintrock Drive in Beltsville. A witness said that they saw a woman inside a car screaming for help. She was able to lock the man out of the car for some time, but he used a rock to break a window and get back in before driving away. One day later, on June 2, MCPD officers, alongside the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, found both Akakpo and the victim in Burtonsville on Almanac Court. Man grazed by bullet during shooting near Waterfront Metro Station
WASHINGTON () — D.C. police are investigating after a man was grazed by a bullet during a shootout near the Waterfront Metro Station on Monday afternoon. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) told DC News Now that minutes before 1:30 p.m. on June 2, officers were called to the 1100 block of 4th Street, Southwest. There, police located a man suffering from a graze wound. DC police finds man who was shot multiple times A preliminary investigation revealed that two people began shooting near the metro station when the man was hit. Police believe the victim was not involved in the incident. Shortly after the shooting, a person was detained, and investigators recovered a gun, according to MPD. On Monday afternoon, crime scene tape blocked off 4th Street as the forensics team took pictures and collected evidence. This shooting comes days after a outside the Waterfront Metro Station.
