Directors
(Thallumala and Alappuzha Gymkhana fame) and
(Bheemante Vazhi) as well as their friend Shalif Mohammed were arrested under the NDPS Act but were given bail as the quantity of the seized ganja was minuscule. A bong (a type of hooka), crushing machine and an OCB paper (smoking paper) too were seized. Excise has information about the person who gave the ganja to the trio and efforts are on to track him, a source said.
The three were nabbed from an apartment along Abraham Madamakkal Road in the city. The excise has information that the flat belongs to popular cinematographer-director Sameer Thahir.
"We will carry out an investigation to see if he was aware of the place being used to abuse drugs. If he was aware, then his statement will also be recorded since providing space to abuse substances can also be brought under the purview of the probe," said an excise officer.
A team led by special squad inspector Pramod KP made the seizure around 2am based on confidential information. "When we entered the room, three individuals, including the two directors, were home. They had gathered to abuse the drugs and their arrest was recorded following procedures. Since the seizure was of a minor quantity, they were let off on bail after a medical examination," said Pramod.
"They were at the apartment for discussions about a film.

We had gone to the apartment with the security guard so as to not arouse any suspicion. Had they known that it was sleuths at the door, they could have destroyed the drugs. They opened the door on seeing the security guard and we were able to catch them with the contraband," said an officer.
Excise officials said not only film industry individuals but drug abusers from all sectors were under scrutiny. They said hybrid ganja was getting increasingly popular and efforts were on to keep it in check by finding the source and preventing its import.
Fefka union suspends duo
In the wake of the arrest, Film Employees Federation of Kerala (Fefka) Directors' Union suspended both filmmakers from the body.
In a statement issued in Kochi, union president Renji Panickar and general secretary GS Vijayan said further steps would be initiated after examining the progress of the ongoing investigation.
Opposition leader VD Satheesan, meanwhile, wanted organisations like Fefka and AMMA to take a decision not to cooperate with anyone in the film industry who consumes or distributes drugs.
The arrest of Rahman and Hamza has happened days after actor Shine Tom Chacko was held in a drug case after escaping from a hotel during a police raid.

Three arrested for drug peddling
Trichy: Three people were arrested on charges of possessing and trying to sell ganja and opioid prescription drugs near Woraiyur in Trichy on Monday. Based on a tip about the sale of nacrotics substances at Aadhi Nagar, police went there and found three men standing suspiciously near a public toilet. When police searched them, they found 300 opioid prescription drug tablets and 100g of ganja with them. The accused were identified as N Matheshwaran, 20, from Woraiyur, H Dhanush, 21, from Mannachanallur, and M Gopishankar, 21, from Uyyakondan Thirumalai. Mute vagabond murdered in southeast Delhi park, 2 minors among 4 held
The Delhi Police arrested an 18-year-old man, a woman, and apprehended two minors in connection with the murder of a mute vagabond at the Astha Kunj Park in southeast Delhi, officials said on Tuesday. Police said the victim stared at the group for a long time, after which the accused assaulted him with fists, kicks and a stick.(Hindustan Times/Representative Image) The body of the victim, identified as Dharam alias Gunga, a mute vagabond who lived near the ISKCON temple, was found on the morning of August 13, the police said. The three accused, identified as Dinesh alias Lalla (18) and two minors, had come to the park for food and drinks. The victim stared at the group for a long time, after which the accused assaulted him with fists, kicks and a stick, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari said. In a related development, the police also arrested a woman identified as Rahana (44), a resident of Shriniwaspuri, who allegedly supplied cannabis to the accused. A case was registered under Section 103 (1) (murder) of the BNS at the Amar Colony Police Station. Since there was no CCTV coverage inside the park, the team analysed footage from the cameras along Raja Dhir Singh Marg near the temple. "A recording from around 12.40 am on August 13 showed three youths alighting from an auto and heading towards the park. Based on surveillance and inputs from informers, police laid a trap and apprehended the accused," the DCP stated. The police recovered blood-stained clothes, two mobile phones and a stick used in the crime. Dinesh, a resident of Banda in Uttar Pradesh, was previously involved in an attempt to murder case as a minor, the DCP added. During interrogation, the accused revealed that the victim allegedly kept staring at them, which provoked them. "When the victim failed to respond to repeated questioning, the accused and his associates assaulted him, leaving him fatally injured," the officer said. Additionally, cannabis weighing 175 grams was recovered from Rahana, leading to a separate case being registered under the NDPS Act at the Amar Colony Police Station.
