Air Cargo Demand Grows 4.4% in March - Middle East Business News and Information - mid-east.info

Mid East Info30-04-2025

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released data for March 2025 global air cargo markets showing: Total demand, measured in cargo tonne-kilometers (CTK), increased by 4.4% compared to March 2024 levels (+5.5% for international operations), a historic peak for March.
Capacity, measured in available cargo tonne-kilometers (ACTK), expanded by 4.3% compared to March 2024 (+6.1% for international operations).
'March cargo volumes were strong. It is possible that this is partly a front-loading of demand as some businesses tried to beat the well-telegraphed 2 April tariff announcement by the Trump Administration. The uncertainty over how much of the 2 April proposals will be implemented may eventually weigh on trade. In the meantime, the lower fuel costs—which are also a result of the same uncertainty—are a short-term positive factor for air cargo. And, within the temporary pause on implementation we hope that political leaders will be able to shift trade tensions to reliable agreements that can restore confidence in global supply chains,' said Willie Walsh, IATA's Director General.
Several factors in the operating environment should be noted: March volumes typically rise after a lull in February, and this single-digit increase is in line with pre-COVID growth trends.
Jet fuel prices dropped 17.3% year-on-year, marking nine straight months of year-on-year declines.
The sharp rise in US tariffs and new trade rules, especially the 2 May ban on duty-free imports from China and Hong Kong, may have prompted companies and buyers to make purchases in advance to avoid significant import fees.
World industrial output grew 3.2% year-on-year, and trade volumes expanded 2.9%. Many key Consumer Price Inflation (CPI) indices fell: US inflation was 2.4%, down 0.4 points from February, EU CPI was 2.5% and Japan's rate fell 0.1% to 3.6%. China remains in deflation but this eased to -0.1%.

March Regional Performance:
Asia-Pacific airlines saw 9.6% year-on-year demand growth for air cargo in March, the strongest growth among the regions. Capacity increased by 11.3% year-on-year.
North American carriers saw a 9.5% year-on-year increase in demand growth for air cargo in March. Capacity increased by 6.1% year-on-year.
European carriers saw a 4.5% year-on-year increase in demand growth for air cargo in March. Capacity increased 2.0% year-on-year.
Middle Eastern carriers saw a -3.2% year-on-year decrease in demand growth for air cargo in March. Capacity increased by 0.8% year-on-year. It's possible the weakness in this market is due to year-on-year comparison with the strong growth at the start of 2024 resulting from disruption to Red Sea maritime freight.
Latin American carriers saw 5.8% year-on-year demand growth for air cargo in March. Capacity increased 4.7% year-on-year.
African airlines saw a -13.4% year-on-year decrease in demand for air cargo in March, the slowest among the regions. Capacity increased by 10.5% year-on-year.
Trade Lane Growth: The Europe-North America route was the busiest trade lane in March. The largest trade lane by market share, Asia-North America, also grew strongly, possibly encouraged by front-loading shipments ahead of potential increased tariffs. Europe-Middle East and Africa-Asia were the only trade lanes to decline in March.

Market Analysis: DAX 40 Eyes Record High as Bullish Momentum Builds

By Daniela Sabin Hathorn, senior market analyst at The DAX 40 index remains within striking distance of its all-time high of 24,390, set in late May. While recent sessions have reflected a degree of consolidation, this week has seen a renewed bullish tilt, supported by softer-than-expected Eurozone inflation data. DAX 40 daily chart: Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results. Inflation Data Fuels Optimism: Tuesday's CPI release added fuel to the market's optimism. Headline inflation in the Eurozone rose 1.9% year-over-year in May, slightly below the consensus forecast of 2.0%. Core CPI—which strips out the more volatile components such as energy and food—also undershot expectations at 2.3% versus the anticipated 2.4% and notably declined from 2.7% in April. On a monthly basis, both headline and core inflation were unchanged, indicating a stall in price growth. These subdued readings reinforce the market's expectations that the European Central Bank (ECB) will continue to ease monetary policy. While some members of the ECB's Governing Council have cautioned against moving too quickly, the latest inflation data lends support to a more dovish stance. Technical Outlook: Momentum Shifts Back to the Upside: From a technical perspective, indicators continue to favour the bulls. Both short- and long-term moving averages are pointing higher, signalling potential for further gains. Meanwhile, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) has cooled from overbought territory following last week's modest pullbacks, suggesting room for renewed upward momentum. A sustained breakout above the 24,390-resistance level would confirm the continuation of the prevailing uptrend. However, if such a move pushes the RSI back toward overbought levels, some degree of consolidation may follow before further gains are realized.

GOL, TAP Adopt IATA FuelIS to Deliver Long-term Fuel Savings - Middle East Business News and Information

The International Air Transport Association IATA announced that GOL and TAP Air Portugal have become the first airlines to use IATA FuelIS—an advanced analytics solution designed to help airlines optimize fuel consumption. IATA's net-zero carbon emissions roadmap highlights that technology and operational efficiency improvements—which directly lower fuel consumption—are expected to contribute to about 10% of the emissions reduction in 2050*. 'Fuel management is key for airlines. Depending on the prevailing price of jet fuel, it generally accounts for 25-30% of the cost base. On top of that, as airlines decarbonize, tracking and managing carbon costs—which are directly related to fuel consumption—will be a growing priority. Understanding how an airline is performing compared with industry peers using FuelIS can pinpoint potential efficiencies that reduce costs and improve environmental performance. The great support from 220 airlines contributing operational data on fuel consumption combined with continuously improving analytical capabilities makes FuelIS a very compelling tool,' said Nick Careen, IATA Senior Vice President Operations, Safety and Security. Data Accuracy and Reliability: IATA FuelIS helps airlines benchmark the fuel efficiency of their aircraft or engines against industry averages, gaining valuable insights into specific markets, regions, countries, and fleet types based on real operational data. IATA FuelIS uses data from the IATA Global Aviation Data Management (GADM) platform. This data is sourced from the Flight Data eXchange (FDX) program which now comprises fuel data from more than 220 airlines worldwide, covering more than 8 million flights a year. FuelIS integrates seamlessly with IATA's Fuel Efficiency Gap Analysis (FEGA), with the data from FuelIS supporting the development and tracking of fuel strategies. Since 2005, IATA has partnered with airlines worldwide, helping the industry identify potential annual reductions of 4.76 million tonnes in fuel consumption, equating to $3.8 billion in savings annually. 'Fuel is a major cost driver for TAP Air Portugal. Managing consumption is an important priority for its cost implications and its contribution to decarbonization. Every kilogram of fuel saved counts. The insights FuelIS provides help us measure the impact of our fleet modernization and our long-term transition to SAF. It also supports a fuel strategy that is more responsive to market and operational changes,' said TAP Air Portugal CEO Luís Rodrigues. 'Fuel is a significant cost factor for all companies and managing how we use it is always important and can be a significant competitive advantage. With FuelIS, we are equipped with data that helps us make better fuel decisions while benchmarking our progress against the industry. Joining FuelIS is yet another important step in our commitment to continuously improve our operations, ensuring high-level performance and focusing on cost reduction,' said GOL COO, Albert Pérez.

IATA CO2 Connect Integrated into the Amadeus Travel Platform - Middle East Business News and Information

The International Air Transport Association IATA and Amadeus are integrating flight-specific emissions data from IATA CO2 Connect in the Amadeus Travel Platform. This will allow airlines, travel agents, corporate travel managers, and online platforms that request IATA CO2 Connect data to provide travelers with a new source of trusted emissions data at the point of booking. IATA CO2 Connect uses real operational data, such as aircraft type-specific fuel consumption, directly contributed by over 70 airlines and calculated using a globally standardized methodology. 'Our agreement with Amadeus will help fulfill traveler expectations for greater transparency as airlines progress towards net zero carbon emissions by 2050. IATA surveys reveal that close to 90% of passengers expect airlines or travel agents to provide carbon emission data for flights they have booked. Yet, 79% highlight that the carbon calculations provided are not always consistent. Making IATA CO2 Connect data available through the Amadeus platform will help users make more informed travel decisions using accurate emissions data,' said Willie Walsh, IATA's Director General. ISO 14083 assurance: The recent ISO 14083 assurance of IATA CO2 Connect aligns the emissions calculator with the common methodology for the data collection and reporting of greenhouse gases across the transport and logistics industry. This new ISO standard is expected to become the basis for the Count Emissions EU regulatory proposal that will define the emissions calculations for all transport modes in the European Union. 'More and more, travelers want to understand how their flight choices affect the environment. This is important not just for personal travel, but also for corporations that need to track emissions and comply with regulations. Amadeus provides its customers with access to emissions data and calculations so that they, in turn, can help travelers make more informed decisions. We welcome the integration of IATA's CO2 Connect solution into the Amadeus Travel Platform.' adds Decius Valmorbida, President, Travel, Amadeus. Growing Number of IATA CO2 Connect Participants: Air India, Thai Airways, Atlas Air, Batik Air Malaysia, Batik Air Indonesia, Lion Air and Thai Lion are among the airlines to announce this week that they have joined the IATA CO2 Connect program, bringing the total contributing airlines to 70 and putting the program on track to signing 100 airlines by the end of 2025.
