Steve Carell Says Mountainhead Is ‘Succession-ish': ‘It's Darker And Chilling'
Steve Carell reacts to the internet comparing Mountainhead to popular TV series, Succession, and expresses worry over living in a high-tech world where AI rules the roost.
Following Succession, which ended two years ago, creator Jesse Armstrong returns with Mountainhead, set to premiere on HBO on May 31. While Jesse once said he wasn't sure if he wanted to make a follow-up to his iconic series, his upcoming outing is drawing attention for its Succession-style exploration of male ambition, power, wealth, and greed. Mountainhead is set in a world dominated by AI, tech bros, and Meta-style giants, who also hold the power to trigger eco-political instability.
Speaking exclusively to News18, Steve Carell, who plays one of the protagonists in Mountainhead, responds to comparisons between the show and Succession. He says the Hiam Abbass, Nicholas Braun, and Brian Cox-starring series was 'dark," but that Mountainhead is 'darker" and 'crazier." 'I think it's Succession-ish in the sense that it's created by Jesse Armstrong. But it's different. It's different in terms of its tone," The Office star tells us.
Steve actually prefers to compare Mountainhead to Stanley Kubrick's 1964 Cold War satire Dr. Strangelove, which also tackled themes of power and ambition. 'I loved Succession and that's the reason I signed on to this. I was and am a huge fan of Jesse's. But tonally, they're a little bit different. To me, Mountainhead feels like a modern-day Doctor Strangelove, and that's one of my favourite films of all time. The darkness and the tether Mountainhead has to reality in this moment is chilling," he states.
The trailer touches upon the far-reaching consequences of AI and deepfakes, evoking growing AI-related anxieties. One scene portrays a violence-engulfed Asia following a deepfake outbreak that further distorts the perception of reality. 'To a degree, it's terrifying. The fact that this technology not only exists but is further along than most of us understand and that the timeline between where we are and what's depicted in the film might not be that far is terrifying," says a concerned Steve.
Mountainhead is already receiving rave reviews for its satirical depiction of a tech-ruled, high-stakes world. Elaborating on the film's core themes, Steve remarks, 'That's why there's a bone-chilling essence to it. This is potentially a real issue we'll face as a society going forward. I loved the way Jesse crafted this film. It's incredibly frightening, but there's also some kind of a palette cleanse with very, very funny moments. I think he has it both ways."

Nandotsav rituals mark Lord Krishnas birth at temples in Mathura, Vrindavan
Mathura (UP), Aug 17 (PTI) Temples in Mathura and Vrindavan on Sunday reverberated with festivities as they celebrated Nandotsav, a celebration marking the joy on Lord Krishna's birth held a day after Janmashtami. Gyanendra Kishor Goswami, a priest at the Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan, said expressions of joy form an integral part of devotion in the Brijbhoomi. 'A mixture of curd and turmeric is used to symbolise infant Krishna's mischief. In a ritual known as 'dadhikandha', this mixture is playfully thrown on the devotees," Goswami said. During the celebrations, toys, clothes, jewellery and money were flung from the sanctum sanctorum for the devotees to collect as 'prasad', a tradition commemorating Nand Baba's delight at Lord Krishna's birth, he added. Earlier in the day, a 'Mangl Aarti' was performed at the Banke Bihari temple after the ceremonial 'Mahaabhishek'. At the Shri Krishna Janmasthan in Mathura, the Bhagwat Bhavan was decorated as Nand Bhawan, which echoed with chants of 'Nand ghar anand bhayo, jai Kanhaiya Lal ki' along with devotional songs. Kapil Sharma, secretary of the Shri Krishna Janmasthan Seva Sansthan, said toys, clothes, sweets and utensils were distributed among the devotees as prasad. Similar rituals were held at Vrindavan's Sapt Devalaya. At the Dwarkadhish temple, the deities were adorned as Nand Baba and Ma Yashoda. 'The festival reflects the joy of Krishna's parents at his birth. Items are distributed to the devotees on this occasion to share the happiness," Rakesh Tiwari, the temple's media and legal advisor, said. The Queen sat beside him in the passenger seat as they went to Crathie Kirk church, which is near the castle. Charles looked relaxed as he waved to people while driving his Audi Q8 e-tron electric SUV to the service. Camilla smiled as she joined him in greeting the public and photographers. The King and Queen dressed smartly for the Sunday service. King Charles, 76, wore a camel coat over his usual suit and tie. Queen Camilla wore a stylish hat with green and black feathers that matched her outfit, GB News reported. Crathie Kirk is the Royal Family's usual place of worship when they stay at Balmoral. The King and Queen are in Scotland for their yearly holiday. The trip usually starts in August, but Charles's holiday was delayed because he was leading the Victory over Japan Day commemorations. VJ Day, observed on August 15, marks the end of World War Two worldwide. On Friday, the King and Queen attended a ceremony at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire to mark the day. They were joined by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, members of VJ associations, military personnel, and senior politicians for the national remembrance service. The King laid a wreath in honour of those who died and held a two-minute silence. While at the event, Camilla was moved to tears when a 105-year-old war veteran paid tribute to Charles in his speech. Yavar Abbas saluted 'my brave king" as he added a personal message. He spoke directly to King Charles and praised him for attending despite his ongoing cancer treatment. The veteran also said that the King's late grandfather, King George VI, would have been proud of him. King George VI, who was Queen Elizabeth II's father, struggled with lung cancer for years before passing away in 1952. view comments First Published: August 17, 2025, 22:57 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
