Manchester's malls and high street's are increasingly important sites for flagship openings and the city itself is an ever more crucial UK fashion hub. Its airport is pretty popular too and this week there have been two announcements about major retail openings there.
Pandora has opened the doors to its first ever UK-owned airport store with the launch of Pandora Manchester Airport, 'marking a major milestone for the brand's presence in travel retail'.
The new store, in Terminal 2, is part of the airport's £1.3 billion transformation programme. It has a 14-metre pink-tiled façade and two large-format digital screens, reflecting the brand's newest visual identity and immersive retail design.
The store carries the full range of its jewellery collections, including Pandora Lab-Grown Diamonds, engraving services, and the summer collection, 'which brings together organic textures, vibrant colours, and ocean-inspired designs'.
Given its location, the store is offering plenty of gift ideas that might appeal to travelling shoppers, as well as self-purchase items. And it will also be the first in the UK to offer a curated selection of national icon travel charms from destinations around the world.
Pandora Manchester Airport is actually the first of three new airport openings in 2025, as part of the brand's growing investment in UK travel retail. A second location is set to open in Gatwick Airport's South Terminal in mid-August, followed by London Luton Airport in early September.
Meanwhile, beauty and wellbeing brand Rituals has been on an opening spree in recent months and it has just opened its newest store, also in Terminal 2 at Manchester Airport.
The company said it's a 'thriving and high-footfall location' and while airport stores are often designed to get shoppers in and out quickly, this one 'will offer an immersive experience' that encourages dwell time.
Annemarie Forsyth, MD of Rituals Cosmetics (UK & Ireland), said: 'Our philosophy is all about helping people slow down and find joy in everyday moments, whether through indulgent bath rituals or soothing home fragrances.'

Heathrow unveils £49 bn expansion plan for third runway

The runway would cost £21 billion, with flights expected to take off within a decade, while the rest of the privately-funded investment will go toward expanding and modernising the airport. Heathrow, Europe's busiest airport by passenger numbers, said the expansion would provide at least 30 new daily routes, more domestic connections and improved flight times. The increased capacity would almost double the number of annual passengers from 84 million currently to up to 150 million passengers annually. "It has never been more important or urgent to expand Heathrow," said chief executive Thomas Woldbye. "We are effectively operating at capacity to the detriment of trade and connectivity," he added. Despite fierce opposition from environmentalists and local residents, the London mayor Sadiq Khan and some Labour MPs, the Labour government backed the new runway in January in a bid to boost UK economic growth. It would be a rare expansion in Europe, where countries are split between efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the needs of a strategic sector that has seen demand grow. Heathrow has submitted its proposal for the 3,500 metre runway to the UK government, which has also invited a rival proposal. Green trade-offs Heathrow's proposal includes £12 billion to fund a new terminal and £15 billion for modernisation. "A third runway and supporting infrastructure can be ready within a decade, and the full investment across all terminals would take place over the coming decades," Heathrow said in a statement. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is determined to deliver major infrastructure projects to revive the UK economy that has struggled to take off since the party came to power a year ago. The government is expected to also back expansion at Gatwick airport, south of the capital, in October -- having recently approved upgrades to London's Stansted, Luton and City airports. Britain's Supreme Court ruled at the end of 2020 that Heathrow could build the third runway, overturning a legal decision to block construction on environmental grounds. Local residents "will see their lives put on hold for a few more years while more money and time is wasted on a doomed scheme," said Douglas Parr, policy director for Greenpeace UK. He added the plans "export more tourism wealth out of the UK in the most polluting way possible." Arora Group, one of Heathrow's largest landowners, on Thursday said it will submit a rival bid to build a shorter third runway, promising lower costs and less disruption to local residents and the environment. "This is the first time the government has invited a competing proposal for Heathrow expansion," the UK-based property and hotel firm said in a statement. Airport-owner Heathrow's latest investment proposal comes in addition to plans to invest £10 billion over the next five years in upgrades to boost passenger numbers, which would be largely funded by higher charges on airlines.

Geox posts 4.7% revenue drop in H1 2025 as market conditions remain challenging

Italian footwear and lifestyle brand Geox began 2025 on a softer note, reporting first-half revenues of €305.3 million (£262.6 million), a 4.7% decline compared to the same period last year. Excluding the impact of store closures in the United States and China, the drop narrowed to 1.9%. Despite the revenue dip, the company posted improved profitability, with EBITDA reaching €34.2 million (£29.4 million), reflecting an 11.2% margin on sales—up from €29.1 million (£25 million) in the first half of 2024. 'The first half of financial year 2025 continues to be impacted by difficult macroeconomic conditions,' Geox said in a statement. 'Consumer spending remains weak, shaped by low confidence and a significant drop in demand. Despite this, we are staying focused on our Business Plan priorities—targeting more profitable markets, streamlining operations, and managing costs.' The company noted that these strategies are already improving operating margins and reinforcing confidence in its long-term plan. The Spring/Summer 2026 sales campaign began in May and will run through to September. Initial customer response has been positive, with the company citing strong interest in the updated style and commercial positioning of the collection. Geox also confirmed that it successfully completed the first phase of a €30 million (£25.8 million) capital increase outlined in its Financial Manoeuvre, with full shareholder participation. 'This result motivates us and confirms the path of revitalisation we are pursuing,' the company said. Revenue from wholesale channels totalled €100.6 million (£86.5 million), down 5.6%, while retail sales declined 2.1% to €124.1 million (£106.7 million). The company highlighted that several store closures took place during the period, but on a like-for-like basis, sales from its directly operated monobrand stores saw a slight increase. Digital sales—including the Geox-owned e-commerce platform and marketplace operations—dropped 7.4% versus the first half of 2024. Geographically, Italy grew 1.6% to €90.5 million (£77.8 million), supported by a 43.8% increase in online sales and stable retail performance (+0.2%). Sales in Europe slipped 1.1% to €144.7 million (£124.4 million), mainly due to weaker results in the DACH region and the Iberian Peninsula. Revenues from "Other Countries" reached €70.1 million (£60.3 million), a 17.5% decrease attributed largely to the absence of sales from the U.S. and China, which contributed approximately €9 million (£7.7 million) in H1 2024. The region was also impacted by ongoing challenges in Russia and nearby markets, although growth in Canada (+14.5%) and the Middle East and Africa (+18.6%) helped offset the decline. In terms of product categories, footwear continued to dominate Geox's business, generating 91.9% of total revenue. Shoe sales reached €280.7 million (£241.4 million), down 3.8% year on year. Apparel sales dropped 13.6% to €24.6 million (£21.2 million). (€1 = £0.86)
