NRL fans all say same thing after Laurie Daley move captured on camera during game

Yahoo29-03-2025
The Laurie Daley-Craig Bellamy partnership got off to a losing start on Saturday after Daley was spotted watching on from Bellamy's coaching box during the Melbourne Storm and Dragons clash. The Storm suffered a shock 14-8 loss in dour conditions at Kogarah, with the Dragons claiming their first win of the NRL season in gutsy scenes.
An interested observer during the game was NSW Blues coach Daley, who was seen standing behind Bellamy in his box. Daley is the new Blues coach in State of Origin for 2025, and Bellamy will work alongside him in an advisory role.
It's not known whether Daley was in attendance on Saturday to shadow Bellamy and see how he operates, or whether he was watching potential NSW players for selection. Either way it didn't work, with the Storm suffering their first loss of the season.

Daley's presence wouldn't have had anything to do with the result, but fans couldn't help but feel it was a bad omen for NSW. Daley's appointment as Blues coach has been a controversial one, with many questioning whether he's been out of the coaching game for too long.
His decision to bring in Bellamy to help with remedy that, but neither man has had much success at State of Origin level in the past. Daley famously helped NSW break Queensland's streak of eight series wins in a row in 2014, but only ended up with six wins from 15 games in charge. Bellamy fared even worse, winning just two games out of nine from 2008 to 2010.
Daley said last December about teaming up with Bellamy: "I've a great relationship with Craig over a number of years. (It) started out as a player (at Canberra) and obviously we keep in touch.
"I was looking for some guidance. I was looking for someone, if I ever got an opportunity again, to help me and I thought he would be the best possible person to do that. Craig will help the coaches and be part of the coaching group, and I'm pretty excited to have him involved.
"And if I'm excited, I think the players will be extremely excited to get to work with someone like Craig. You don't have to talk about what he's achieved in the game. He's passionate about NSW and he wants to be a part of it, which is exciting for us.
"Knowing Craig the way I do, the way he operates, the way he goes about building structures in a footy team, the way he interacts with coaches, the way he interacts with players…I think that's a bonus for us. Both of us have that passion and desire to be successful."

Fans had some brutal reactions on Saturday as the Storm lost with Daley in the box. Bellamy's side had 46 play-the-balls in the Dragons' 20m zone but their sole try was scored by Ryan Papenhuyzen just before half-time. "We had a couple of chances that we could have and should have taken - and we paid the price for it," Bellamy said.
If Laurie Daley is just there to watch players he's looking at for NSWInstead of hanging around the shedsI preferred when Madge was just in the crowd looming over everyoneHad a bit more dare I say 'Aura'

2025 WNBA MVP, DPOY, MIP Odds: Betting, Futures, Predictions, including Collier, Thomas, Wilson

In what is the final WNBA poll of the season, what once were runaway awards are coming down to the wire with 10 games or fewer remaining. Paige Bueckers ran away with Rookie of the Year as most shops stopped offering odds over a month ago, while Alyssa Thomas and A'ja Wilson have made late pushes to upend with Napheesa Collier to be the MVP. The Most Improved Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year are likely to come down to the final game or two of the season. Let's take a look at the odds and updated race according to DraftKings odds. WNBA MVP Ladder: Napheesa Collier (-225) has been out since August 2nd and now missed four straight games and seven overall this season. Despite Collier being out, Minnesota hasn't missed a beat going 6-1 without Collier and 22-4 with her. Alyssa Thomas (+350) has triple-doubled in four of the past six games and five times this year as she continues to push toward her first-ever MVP. Thomas averages 16.2 points, 9.1 assists, and 8.6 rebounds, in addition to 2.2 steals + blocks per game (missed 5 games this year). No one expected the 33-year-old Thomas to shine this bright in her 11th season, but she's making her case stronger by the day, especially the more Collier sits. While A'ja Wilson (+550) has closed the gap to become the obvious third choice — she is not worth a bet at her price. Wilson and Caitlin Clark not winning MVP are the best outcomes for sports books, and I'd have to say Thomas is likely a top-five liability with Collier being such a heavy favorite early on. WNBA DPOY Ladder: Napheesa Collier (+600) missing the last four games and maybe a fifth-straight doesn't help her Defensive Player of the Year odds, but it has assisted A'ja Wilson (+100) and Gabby Williams (+400) to climb the ranks. A DPOY and MVP season for Collier would be truly historic but that's looking less and less likely day by day. Williams leads the WNBA in steals per game (2.4) and has at least one steal in 32 of 35 games and two-plus steals in 25 of 35 games. Not to mention, Williams hasn't missed a game all season for the Storm, something that Wilson and Collier cannot say. It's starting to feel like Williams came out of nowhere, but she has been steady top-five for this award over the last two months and was considered a longshot or sleeper throughout the whole process. Wilson has the on-and-off the court splits to support her argument and she leads the WNBA in combined blocks and steals per game, but the Aces don't have that overall defense that would warrant another DPOY for Wilson. I could be wrong and the market says so, but If I was to make a bet — I would look at Williams at +400. WNBA MIP Ladder: I believe this is a two-player race with Allisha Gray (+200) and Azura Stevens (+600) as the main competitors despite Veronica Burton's (+300) rise with Golden State as a likely playoff team. Gray continues to gain support in this market as she scored 22-plus points in four of seven games to start August and double-doubled once. Gray has increased her points (+3.0), rebounds (+1.1), and assists (1.1) on 2.2 more minutes per game and 1.3 more FGA/FTA per game. Stevens' odds took a hit in the previous game after she posted six points and two rebounds over 29 minutes in a loss to the Mystics. Stevens does have five games of 15-plus points in the last eight contests but has only double-doubled once in the past 13 games. I think this is Gray's award to lose despite Stevens' raising her career-best in points per game from 11.5 to 14.4 this season. None of Steven's other per game stats have rivaled the rise across the board for Gray in the limited added playing time. Vaughn Dalzell's WNBA Futures Bets: 2 units: Golden State Valkyries to miss the playoffs (-125) 2 units: Stephanie White to win Coach of the Year (+115) 2 units: Minnesota Lynx to win Championship (+340) 2 units: A'ja Wilson to win MVP (+225) 2 units: Napheesa Collier to win DPOY (+200) 2 units: Napheesa Collier to win MVP (+150) 1 unit: Allisha Gray to win MIP (+400) 0.5 unit: Napheesa Collier to win MVP (+300) 0.5 unit: Jonquel Jones to win DPOY (+3000) 0.5 unit: Angel Reese to win DPOY (+2000) 0.5 unit: Aliyah Boston to win DPOY (+3500) 0.5 unit: Kamila Cardoso to win DPOY (+5500) 0.5 unit: Kayla Thornton to win MIP (+400) 0.5 unit: Brittney Sykes to win MIP (+250) 0.5 unit: Aliyah Boston to win MIP (+1500) 0.5 unit: Kamila Cardoso to win MIP (+3000) 0.5 unit: Seattle Storm to win the Championship (+2500) Please bet responsibly. Storm legend Sue Bird gets GOAT shoutout from Isaiah Thomas

The post Storm legend Sue Bird gets GOAT shoutout from Isaiah Thomas appeared first on ClutchPoints. Seattle Storm legend Sue Bird garnered a positive shoutout from former NBA star Isaiah Thomas as she celebrated her career on Sunday. Bird attended the Storm's game against the Phoenix Mercury, being there to witness the unveiling of her statue. She represented the Seattle-based franchise for her entire career from 2002 to 2022, winning four WNBA titles, eight All-WNBA selections, and 13 All-Star selections. Thomas reacted to her celebrations with a post on social media. It's clear that the two-time NBA All-Star has major respect for what Bird achieved, giving her props as she got her statue. 'S/o to the 🐐 @S10Bird on getting a statue in the city!!! Forever respect and love @seattlestorm 🏁,' Thomas said. How Sue Bird's Storm played against Mercury Despite Sue Bird's special day, the Storm were unable to put the cherry on top as they lost 85-82 to the Mercury. Both teams exchanged blows throughout the course of the game, but Phoenix seemed to hold the advantage after the first three quarters. With the game still close, Seattle attempted to rally in the last 10 minutes but was unsuccessful as they lost at home. Perimeter shooting made the difference in this matchup. The Mercury knocked down eight of their 22 attempts from downtown, an accuracy of 30.8%. This was in stark contrast to the Storm making just four of their 18 tries, a 3-point accuracy of 18.2%. Four players scored on Seattle's behalf in the loss. Nneka Ogwumike led the way with 24 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals. She shot 10-of-17 from the field, including 1-of-6 from beyond the arc, and 3-of-3 from the free=throw line. Skylar Diggins came next with 14 points and seven assists, Gabby Williams had 13 points and seven assists, while Brittney Sykes provided 11 points and four assists. Seattle fell to a 17-18 record on the season, holding the fifth spot of the Western Conference standings. They are two games behind the Golden State Valkyries and four games behind the Las Vegas Aces. The Storm will prepare for their next matchup, being on the road. They face the Chicago Sky on Aug. 19 at 8 p.m. ET. Related: WNBA commends Storm over historic Sue Bird tribute Related: Sue Bird receives message from Diana Taurasi before statue unveiling

Retired WNBA star Sue Bird makes history as 1st player honored with statue

Retired basketball star Sue Bird made history Sunday, becoming the first WNBA player to be honored by her franchise with a statue. "People keep asking me what it feels like to be the first," Bird, 44, said in a speech at the bronze statue's unveiling ceremony in Seattle. "The truth is that I never set out to be the first at anything, but if being the first means that I won't be the last, if this statue means that 20 years from now, there will be statues of other WNBA greats -- some are in this audience and players whose names we don't even know yet -- then I'm proud to be the first." Bird's statue stands outside of Climate Pledge Arena, the home of the WNBA's Seattle Storm. Bird played as a Storm guard for her entire WNBA career, having been selected by the team as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 WNBA draft. She retired in 2022, after leading the team to four championship victories. When she retired, Bird was the all-time leader in games and minutes played, as well as assists, and was a 13-time WNBA All-Star. Bird is also a five-time Olympic gold medalist and two-time NCAA champion. Although Bird earned numerous accolades over her two decades with the WNBA, she said being recognized with a statue truly stood out. "I hope it tells a simple story," Bird said of her statue. "That greatness isn't about being perfect. It's about being persistent. That you can be true to yourself and still achieve extraordinary things." The statue of Bird was created by artist and sculptor Julie Rotblatt Amrany of Rotblatt Amrany Studio. It features Bird mid-layup, wearing Nike Air Zoom Huarache sneakers, details the former guard said were especially meaningful. "My very first points in the WNBA, at KeyArena, as a rookie, were on a layup. My very final points in the WNBA were at Climate Pledge on a layup," said Bird. "[I'm] not really known for those layups, but it's actually something that means a lot to me. So, this feels very full circle." Bird was also wearing Nike Air Zoom Huarache sneakers when she won her first Olympic gold medal at the 2004 Athens Games, as well as that year's WNBA championship title. In her speech on Sunday, Bird also emphasized her love for her adopted home of Seattle and concluded with a humorous note. "This statue will make sure that a piece of me stays in this city forever, just like this city will always be a part of me," Bird said. "And when you inevitably see a little bird poop on my shoulder, don't worry about it. Just consider it family checking in and reminding me where home is."
