‘What the point?': Legend slams NRL
Broncos legend Corey Parker has called for greater transparency from the NRL when it comes to controversial refereeing decisions, with coaches unable to discuss contentious rulings in round 4 amid fears they could be fined. An email was sent to all 17 clubs before the season warning coaches, players and officials to not criticise referees after matches, while head office also got rid of Graham Annesley's weekly briefing in a bid to remove the focus on the men and women making big calls in games. While it's doing a great job protecting the referees, it's leaving fans frustrated that they can't hear the thoughts of coaches after a game when they're asked about crucial decisions. Raiders coach Ricky Stuart blew up in round 3 over what he thought was a lopsided penalty count against his side, while several coaches held back over the weekend when asked about major calls. Benji Marshall was unhappy with the decision to award the Warriors a late penalty that they converted to win the game by two points, with the Wests Tigers coach unwilling to expand on his thoughts because he didn't want to be sanctioned. 'You were watching the game, you write whatever you think,' Marshall said after Sunday's narrow loss. 'I don't want to do what Ricky (Stuart) did and risk getting fined and talk about the ref because we're not allowed to, so I won't bring it up. 'I don't think we are (allowed to talk about decisions). There's nothing more to say, if you were there watching you know.' With coaches muzzled and the NRL unwilling to weigh in on controversial calls, Parker feels that fans are being short-changed and left without important answers about potentially match-changing decisions. The Warriors hit the front late on, thanks to a penalty goal from Metcalf! 📺 Watch #NRLTigersWarriors on ch.502 or stream on Kayo: BLOG MATCH CENTRE — Fox League (@FOXNRL) March 30, 2025 'The journos have a role to play. If they jump up and down and make such a fuss in and around some of the decisions that are made, the lack of explanations and the high shots that have been let go, the NRL will then feel compelled to give the fans (answers),' the former lock forward said on SENQ. 'The fans are the ones that need answers, or do we not need answers? And then you just move forward? Does no one want to hear from a referee that Leota was a try or wasn't a try? 'Does no one want to hear from the referees boss that (Selwyn) Cobbo's foot wasn't out when he tried to bat a ball back in from a 40/20 attempt? 'I think we do need to hear, and the fans are given that right. They pay their hard-earned money to go and watch a game of football, and they're not getting some of the answers they need. 'On the flip side, they front up and get given these questions thrown at them when they're emotional after a win or loss, and they've got to be tight-lipped and can't say anything. 'You're dealing with some really smart individuals, and essentially, they're not saying a thing, so what's the point of having press conferences?'

NRL fans all say same thing after Laurie Daley move captured on camera during game
The Laurie Daley-Craig Bellamy partnership got off to a losing start on Saturday after Daley was spotted watching on from Bellamy's coaching box during the Melbourne Storm and Dragons clash. The Storm suffered a shock 14-8 loss in dour conditions at Kogarah, with the Dragons claiming their first win of the NRL season in gutsy scenes. An interested observer during the game was NSW Blues coach Daley, who was seen standing behind Bellamy in his box. Daley is the new Blues coach in State of Origin for 2025, and Bellamy will work alongside him in an advisory role. It's not known whether Daley was in attendance on Saturday to shadow Bellamy and see how he operates, or whether he was watching potential NSW players for selection. Either way it didn't work, with the Storm suffering their first loss of the season. Spotted: NSW Blues coach, Laurie Daley in @storm's coaches box, joining Craig Bellamy who is Daley's chief adviser this 2025 Origin series #NRLDragonsStorm — Stormcast Podcast (@StormcastPod) March 29, 2025 Daley's presence wouldn't have had anything to do with the result, but fans couldn't help but feel it was a bad omen for NSW. Daley's appointment as Blues coach has been a controversial one, with many questioning whether he's been out of the coaching game for too long. His decision to bring in Bellamy to help with remedy that, but neither man has had much success at State of Origin level in the past. Daley famously helped NSW break Queensland's streak of eight series wins in a row in 2014, but only ended up with six wins from 15 games in charge. Bellamy fared even worse, winning just two games out of nine from 2008 to 2010. Daley said last December about teaming up with Bellamy: "I've a great relationship with Craig over a number of years. (It) started out as a player (at Canberra) and obviously we keep in touch. "I was looking for some guidance. I was looking for someone, if I ever got an opportunity again, to help me and I thought he would be the best possible person to do that. Craig will help the coaches and be part of the coaching group, and I'm pretty excited to have him involved. "And if I'm excited, I think the players will be extremely excited to get to work with someone like Craig. You don't have to talk about what he's achieved in the game. He's passionate about NSW and he wants to be a part of it, which is exciting for us. "Knowing Craig the way I do, the way he operates, the way he goes about building structures in a footy team, the way he interacts with coaches, the way he interacts with players…I think that's a bonus for us. Both of us have that passion and desire to be successful." Bellamy's side had 46 play-the-balls in the Dragons' 20m zone but their sole try was scored by Ryan Papenhuyzen just before half-time. "We had a couple of chances that we could have and should have taken - and we paid the price for it," Bellamy said. Liddle stands tall as Dragons seal shock win over Storm
St George Illawarra have taken advantage of a directionless Melbourne to claim a 14-8 win and end the Storm's unbeaten start to the 2025 NRL season. Saturday's victory - the Dragons' first of the campaign - was a dour and ugly affair, which hung in the balance until the final quarter of an hour. Interchange hooker Jacob Liddle burrowed his way over the line in the 69th minute to send the 6211 rainsoaked crowd at Kogarah Oval into a frenzy. The Dragons had let narrow games slip from their grasp in the first two rounds of the season, falling to Canterbury and South Sydney before last week's bye. But Liddle's dummy-half barge-over was enough for the Red V to edge past an unconvincing Storm. Lids barges over! 🔴⚪️#BreatheFire #NRLDragonsStorm — St George Illawarra Dragons (@NRL_Dragons) March 29, 2025 Without halfback Jahrome Hughes, Melbourne struggled for fluency in attack and their all-star spine struggled to hit top gear. Craig Bellamy's side had 46 play-the-balls in the Dragons' 20m zone but their sole try was scored by Ryan Papenhuyzen just before halftime. Papenhuyzen's four-pointer came after stand-in Storm halfback Tyran Wishart had kicked a penalty goal to open the scoring for the visitors. Valentine Holmes crossed the first try of the afternoon in the 34th minute before Papenhuyzen gave Melbourne an 8-6 lead. Gutho links up with Val Holmes! 🐲#NRLDragonsStorm — NRL (@NRL) March 29, 2025 Melbourne had chances to score but Shawn Blore and Eli Katoa both fumbled the ball as they looked to pull away. After missing an earlier penalty goal from right in front, Holmes drew the Dragons level in the 62nd minute with a straightforward kick to send the game down to the wire. Liddle was the hero from close range as the hooker shrugged off some lax Storm defending to give his side the lead. Holmes added the extras to give the home side a six-point buffer which Melbourne could not overcome. Bellamy's men face an unenviable away trip to Manly next week and will desperately need to refine their attack if they are to trouble the Sea Eagles.
