Govt foregoes ₹99,000 crore corporate tax revenue in FY24, says MoS Finance. Here's why
The minister, in a written reply at the Rajya Sabha, provided estimates of the revenue lost due to tax incentives, including various corporate tax deductions, from FY 2019-20 to 2023-24.
The government waived ₹ 98,999 crore tax revenue in 2023-24, compared to ₹ 88,109 crore in 2022-23 and ₹ 96,892 crore in 2021-22.
In the fiscal years 2020-21 and 2019-20, the total amount of corporate tax revenue foregone was ₹ 75,218 crore and ₹ 8,043 crore, respectively.
The minister shared the data on corporate tax revenue foregone, in response to a question from AAP MP Raghav Chadha on the estimated loss to the exchequer due to the corporate tax reductions from 2019-20 to 2024-25.
Chaudhary said that the estimated revenue foregone for the financial year 2024-25 till date is not available.
Since 2016, corporate tax rates have gradually decreased as exemptions and incentives are phased out.
The Finance Act, 2016, lowered corporate tax rates to 29% of total income with the aim to encourage growth, increase investment, and generate more employment.
The corporate tax rate was lowered to 25 per cent of total income in 2017, with the goal of benefiting smaller domestic companies with an annual turnover of ₹ 50 crores and making it more attractive for firms to adopt a company structure.
In September 2019, the government announced a reduction in the base corporate tax rate, lowering it to 22 per cent from 30 per cent for existing companies. For new manufacturing firms incorporated after October 1, 2019, the rate was decreased to 15 per cent from 25 per cent, on the condition that they forgo all exemptions and incentives.

Rupee falls 2 paise to 86.40 against US dollar in early trade
Mumbai, Jul 23 (PTI) The rupee depreciated 2 paise to 86.40 against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday, amid outflow of foreign funds and higher crude oil prices. According to forex traders, positive sentiment in domestic equity markets capped a sharp fall in the rupee even as the American currency strengthened after the US announced a trade deal with Japan. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened weak at 86.46 and recovered slightly to trade at 86.40 against the greenback in initial deals, 2 paise lower from its previous closing level. At the end of Tuesday's trading session, the local unit settled at 86.38, down 7 paise over its previous close. This was the rupee's fifth straight session of decline since July 16 when the unit had lost 16 paise and ended at 85.92 against the dollar. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.04 per cent to 97.15, after the US announced a trade deal with Japan. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, went up by 0.29 per cent to USD 68.79 per barrel in futures trade. Analysts said investors are keeping a close watch on the outcome of India-US trade talks ahead of the August 1 deadline as Indian exporters are staring at higher tariffs in American market. If the discussions fail or get delayed, Indian exporters could face fresh pressure — adding to the rupee's challenges. The US team will visit India in August for the next round of negotiations for the proposed bilateral trade agreement between the two countries. India and the US teams concluded the fifth round of talks for the agreement last week in Washington. Meanwhile, in the domestic equity market, Sensex advanced 209.09 points or 0.25 per cent to 82,395.90, while Nifty rose 60.45 points or 0.24 per cent to 25,121.35. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 3,548.92 crore on a net basis on Tuesday, according to exchange data. 'Asian cues are positive due to Japan securing a trade deal with the US," Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research, Axis Securities, said. The US markets ended mostly higher on Tuesday. 'The 11th new record high for 2025 set by S&P 500 yesterday is an indication of the direction and resilience of equity markets globally. Markets are climbing all walls of worries and valuation concerns have been put on the back burner. In the near-term this resilience is likely to continue," V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited, said. A significant takeaway from the early Q1 results is the improving prospects of banking and digital stocks. Q1 results of Eternal and Paytm indicate steady growth potential of the digital stocks which have a long runway of growth, he added. US President Donald Trump has announced a trade deal with Japan, with a 15 per cent tax on goods imported from that nation. According to a report by Kotak Institutional Equities, central government employees may receive an effective salary hike of 13% vis-a-vis pay hike of 14.3 percent under 7th Pay Commission. The 7th Pay Commission (January 2016 - December 2025) had implemented a modest salary hike, which was lowest since 1970. 8th Pay Commission: Expected Fitment Factor 2 / 10 The fitment factor could be set at 1.8 percent under 8th Pay Commission, lower than the 2.7 perecent fitment factor announced under the 7th Pay Commission. Although the 1.8 fitment factor translates into 80% hike in basic pay (current basic pay multiplied by 1.8% fitment factor, the effective hike could go up by only 13% because the dearness allowance (DA) --which is currently at 55 percent --will be reset to zero once the new pay structure is implemented under the 8th Pay Commission. 8th Pay Commission: FinMin Response In Lok Sabha 3 / 10 The Finance Ministry recently responded to questions pertaining to 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC) in Lok Sabha. It will also benefit around 65 lakh central government pensioners, including defence retirees. 8th Pay Commission: January 2026 Implementation Prospects Bleak 7 / 10 The prospects for the Commission's implementation on January 1, 2026, appear bleak. While the tenure of the 7th Pay Commission ends on 31 December 2025 and the constitution of the new Commission is in limbo, the central government employees and pensioners are increasingly becoming anxious. 8th Pay Commission Tor Delay Causes Anxiety 8 / 10 According to the Staff Side, the continued delay in the formal issuance of the ToRs has led to widespread speculation and uncertainty among central government employees and pensioners. Many fear whether this move is a genuine administrative initiative or otherwise. ToR, Chairman Appointment: 7th Pay Commission Vs 8th Pay Commission Timeline Compared 9 / 10 The 7th CPC was announced in September 2013 and its chairman and ToR were notified in February 2014. However, since the announcement of the 8th Pay Commission on January 16, 2025, the ToR of the Commission are still pending.
