
Educators battle for students' attention in the age of TikTok

KUWAIT: In a generation where students wake up to 30 unread text messages, endless 20-second TikTok videos, and a constant stream of Instagram stories, it has become increasingly challenging for educators to keep pace with their shifting cognitive habits. Although educators are working hard to meet students where they are, many of the strategies being used may not truly foster the deep, critical thinking skills they hope they will develop for the future.
Maha Saleh, a former high school history teacher at a public school in Kuwait, expresses deep concern over what she describes as a troubling decline in student engagement.
'The level of apathy I've seen in recent years is unlike anything I've experienced before. Students don't seem to care about their grades or school at all,' she said. 'When I'm teaching, it often feels like they're physically present—but mentally, they're somewhere else entirely because they are just waiting for that next hit of dopamine.'
This 'hit of dopamine' is more than a figure of speech. 'Digital dopamine' is a term that emerged in the mid-2010s as researchers and wellness experts began exploring the link between digital technology use and brain chemistry. Many apps and platforms are intentionally designed to trigger dopamine releases through unpredictable reward patterns, reinforcing compulsive scrolling and screen time.
Educators and schools are now grappling with how to provide meaningful learning experiences despite these challenges.
One school in Kuwait enforced a school-wide phone ban as a solution. Rania Khudairi, a middle school English teacher with over a decade of experience in Kuwait's private education sector, shared the outcomes with Kuwait Times. While Khudairi and her team anticipated some resistance, they were blindsided by just how deeply the ban disrupted students.
'We observed students reacting like addicts going through withdrawal,' Khudairi explains. 'It was nearly impossible to engage or teach a child who was preoccupied—mentally checking out because they were craving that next TikTok video or waiting for a message from a friend.'
This classroom response, Khudairi suggests, is more than just behavioral—it reflects underlying changes in brain chemistry. Dr Haitham Al-Khayat, a neurosurgeon in Kuwait with over twenty years of experience, explains the neurological impact of prolonged social media and smartphone use among young people:
'They stimulate the part of the brain responsible for short-term gratification, known as the dopaminergic mesolimbic system. Repeated stimulation of this system triggers changes in the brain similar to those observed in individuals struggling with substance addiction.'
Dr Al-Khayat urges educators and individuals to take proactive steps in addressing this 'dopamine addiction' by fostering a healthier balance rather than enforcing total deprivation. Yet, what they're noticing is that this approach may be jeopardizing learning in other ways—potentially worsening students' already shortened attention spans. Khudairi reflects on how this trade-off plays out in the classroom: 'While some students appreciate deeper exploration of concepts, I can't really give that to them since it often comes at the cost of losing the attention of the majority.'

Because we are mainly consumers, not producers of content.' She warns that without real reform in media and education, which have the greatest impact on young minds, these issues will worsen. Wealth and classism Another key factor is the Gulf's rapid modernization and economic wealth. 'I think one of the biggest challenges we face is the effects of economic wealth on our socio-cultural structure,' she said. Dr Karimi explains how this has created an unhealthy form of classism that often outweighs ethnic or racial affiliations. 'Wealthy people tend to marry each other, even with different, let's say, ethnic affiliations. But a person of the same race will not take a very poor person,' Dr Karimi added. The Gulf is one of the world's most consumptive regions per capita—whether in water, food, or luxury goods,' she said, highlighting the rampant classism that people in the Gulf grapple with. 'Much of our wealth is spent on consumption, social status, and showmanship.' Dr Karimi stresses that the media and education system play a crucial role in addressing these issues and instilling the ethics of justice, equality, love, and cooperation. 'These are not new values for Gulf societies; our tradition of neighborliness is based on mutual support and social solidarity.' She advocates for media—such as popular soap operas—to actively preserve and promote these values through their narratives. Similarly, education must reinforce these ethics in tangible ways. 'What we sow now, we will reap soon. If the media and education systems do not change, the situation will deteriorate,' Dr Karimi warns. However, she remains optimistic: 'If we undertake a serious review and reform process, we can avoid future problems.'

India's mother tongue teaching spells reading success
KALYANPUR, India: Sitting together on the classroom floor in Kalyanpur in northwest India, a dozen children aged five and six are trying to identify Hindi words beginning with the 'p' sound. After a spontaneous 'papa', the children unanimously agree on 'papaya'—spelt out at the top of their lungs by the entire class. But for these children, born into an Indigenous tribe in Rajasthan state, learning to read in a language neither they nor their parents speak is a challenge. To break this pattern, authorities launched a program in two Rajasthan districts to teach students to read in their mother tongue. Months after the experiment began, there is progress. 'I used Hindi language with the children, but I could see that they were not responding well,' said their teacher, Jashoda Khokariya. 'They were scared, and were not able to answer my questions,' she added. 'Now, it's a miracle—there is not a single child who is not able to respond.' Indian school enrolment rates are high—but performance is much lower. One key problem in the world's most populous country, where 1.4 billion people speak a mosaic of over a hundred languages, is that primary school teaching is often in a language the children do not understand. At the age of eight, only 39 percent of Indian students reach the required reading level. At 15, the situation is even worse. The rate drops to 10 percent. Poverty, early marriage and poor teacher training are all to blame—but language plays a part too. 'We have a multilingual society; this needs to be accounted for when children come to school,' said Saadhna Panday, from the UN children's agency (UNICEF). 'Several studies have demonstrated that children learn best in the early years in their mother tongue.' But this is rarely the case. 'There were many obstacles,' said Shweta Fageria, director of Rajasthan's State Council of Educational Research and Training center. 'We first created dictionaries by using the local dialect,' she added, before making them trilingual with Hindi and English. At the Kuwadi Nichala Fala School, a spartan concrete building on a dusty hill, 13 first graders—aged around five to six—leaf through the dictionary every schoolday. It is a far cry from the other side of India's education system—the ultramodern technology institutes whose prize pupils are snapped up by Californian tech giants. In the sweltering heat, the top student deciphers a few lines. He is still far from mastering reading in his native Wagdi—a language with more than three million speakers, according to the last census. But he is making great progress, like all the students in his class, according to his teacher. 'They can now read words,' Lakshmi Kumari Patel said.
