On World Lung Cancer Day 2025 (August 1), Dr Shivani Swami, consultant pulmonologist at Amar Jain Hospital, WHC, Jaipur, told HT Lifestyle, 'Caring for your lungs is not simply not smoking. It's caring about where you are, your posture, and your life.'
She recommended daily breathing exercises, short walks, drinking fluids, and avoiding pollutants as simple steps to strengthen the lungs. Ahead, she highlighted six common habits that seem harmless but can progressively affect lung function:
Secondhand smoking
Dr Swami said, 'Even if you don't smoke, being around people who do or even the smoke from hookahs or incense is just as deadly. Long-term exposure to secondhand smoke has also been linked to impaired lung function and a heightened risk of respiratory infection.'
Sedentary lifestyle
She added, 'A sedentary lifestyle harms more than your weight or your heart. It may also reduce lung efficiency. Regular exercise stimulates more comprehensive breathing, strengthens respiratory muscles, and allows the lungs to work better.'
Posture issues
According to Dr Swami, 'Poor working posture, especially slouching on a couch or desk, compresses the lungs and renders them less capable of expanding completely.'
Stifling your cough
'Suppressing a cough occasionally may be courteous or convenient, but as a regular practice, it may prevent the lungs from clearing out mucus or foreign irritants,' she said.
Lack of adequate water intake
Dr Swami said, 'Hydration maintains the thin, elastic character of the lung mucosal lining. In a water deficiency, mucus becomes thicker, less capable of removing irritants, and more vulnerable to pathogens taking hold.'
Excessive use of chemical-laden products
She added, 'Cleaning products, disinfectants, air fresheners, and scented candles are sweet-smelling but contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Long-term exposure to such chemicals will irritate the airways and gradually reduce lung capacity.'

Hepatitis D or HDV, which only affects individuals infected with hepatitis B, is associated with a two- to six-fold higher risk of liver cancer compared to hepatitis B alone, according to the IARC. Viral hepatitis, characterised by inflammation of the liver, can be caused by the five known hepatitis viruses—A, B, C, D and E. Among these, only hepatitis B, C, and D can lead to chronic infections that significantly increase the risk of cirrhosis, liver failure, or liver cancer. New Delhi: The World Health Organisation-International Agency for Research in Cancer (WHO-IARC) has now declared hepatitis D, a little-known but deadly viral hepatitis, as carcinogenic, expressing hope that this will lead to more screening and access to new treatments. It is estimated that globally, 48 million people are affected with HDV, which in combination with the hepatitis B virus, has the highest fatality rate of all the hepatitis infections, at 20 percent. Its prevalence is highest in low- and middle-income regions in Africa and Asia, apart from the Amazon basin and India. Scientific evidence has shown that 8-37 percent, depending on the region, of those infected with hepatitis B, also have HDV. A 2024 report by the WHO had said that India had over 3.5 crore cases of viral hepatitis—including 2.98 crore hepatitis B cases—in 2022, accounting for 11.6 percent of the total disease burden globally that year. Over 1.25 lakh people, the report suggested, had died due to hepatitis B and C in India that year. Senior gastroenterologists and public health professionals suggested that HDV is largely undetected in the country, mainly because of lack of screening, and is more prevalent in some parts of east India and among people infected with HBV. 'From a public health perspective, this classification by WHO-IARC highlights the importance of incorporating HDV awareness, screening, and prevention into the existing hepatitis B prevention programme,' Dr Saswata Chatterjee, gastroenterologist with the Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI), told ThePrint. With liver cancer becoming a challenging burden, screening and early detection of co-infections, such as HDV, will be crucial in reducing chronic complications of viral hepatitis, he added. Also Read: Govt says no plan to ban heartburn drug ranitidine, carcinogenic impurities within safe limits HBV triggers rapid progression to end-stage liver failure Dr Piyush Ranjan, senior gastroenterologist with Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, explained that HDV is a satellite virus that requires hepatitis B virus (HBV) for replication, causing the most aggressive form of viral hepatitis. Compared to hepatitis B and C, HDV leads to more rapid progression to cirrhosis and liver cancer. In clinical terms, explained CMRI's Dr Chatterjee, HDV occurs as a co-infection—when it is contracted simultaneously with HBV—or a superinfection—when an individual who is chronically infected with HBV becomes infected with HDV. While HBV increases the risk of developing liver complications, HDV increases this risk substantially, accelerating the progression of liver fibrosis, cirrhosis and malignancy. The mode of transmission of this hepatitis virus is similar to hepatitis B and C—through contaminated injections, mother to child, and sexual contact. Dr Vibhor Sharma, a medical oncologist with Asian Hospital, highlighted that co-dependency of HDV on HBV leads to making hepatitis worse in patients. 'HDV-triggered liver disease is more severe as it can result in end-stage liver failure in less than ten years,' he said, adding that as compared to the general population in India, this form of hepatitis is seen more commonly in intravenous drug users, HIV/AIDS patients and those with chronic HBV. The declaration by the WHO-IARC is crucial, said the medical oncologist as HDV, despite its aggressiveness in triggering liver cancers, is mostly undiagnosed and is grossly underreported in developing countries such as India. Prevention and management Clinicians say HDV is preventable at a low cost, through immunisation. The effective methods to prevent both HBV and HDV are the vaccines against hepatitis B, safe blood practices, sterilisation of medical equipment, and safe sex practices, said Dr Chatterjee. The HBV vaccine in India, as part of the Union government 's Universal Immunization Programme, was piloted in 2002-03 and then scaled up in the entire country in 2010 to protect children from the acute infection. It is now provided as part of the pentavalent vaccine at 6, 10 & 14 weeks apart from the birth dose of hepatitis B vaccine. However, a 2020 study from India said that although the coverage of third-dose hepatitis B vaccine has reached 86 percent in the country, the birth dose coverage was under 50 percent in 2015 despite high rates of institutional deliveries. The WHO says that while treatment with oral medicine can cure hepatitis C within 2 to 3 months and effectively suppress hepatitis B with life-long therapy, treatment options for hepatitis D are evolving. Sir Ganga Ram's Dr Ranjan maintained that for those already infected, management is challenging, with limited approved therapies, though newer agents like bulevirtide—an antiviral therapy especially developed against the condition—offer promise. 'The carcinogen tag will hopefully intensify global surveillance, funding, and research to curb the burden of HDV-associated liver cancer,' said the gastroenterologist. In a statement issued today, the organisation said residents of Gaza are suffering from extreme food shortages, with some going days without eating and others dying from severe weakness or organ failure. Children with acute malnutrition, it added, are particularly at risk of death without urgent treatment. The statement highlighted that Gaza's healthcare system is no longer able to function effectively due to a dire shortage of medical supplies and fuel, compounding the suffering of both patients and healthcare workers. The organisation noted that recovery from malnutrition requires months of specialised medical care and therapeutic feeding, warning that some effects may be lifelong, such as stunted growth and chronic health conditions. The WHO called for the immediate and unhindered entry of humanitarian aid -- food and medicine -- through all possible routes. It urged Israel to facilitate the delivery of assistance and ensure its safe and rapid passage in order to save lives and end the suffering of civilians. Many women unknowingly overlook subtle signs that could be early indicators of breast health issues. From minor changes in skin texture to unexpected discomfort, these symptoms often go unreported until it's too late. Breast imaging expert highlights subtle signs of cancer patients often ignore. (Pexels) "In my 15 years of experience as a breast radiologist, I've seen countless cases where early warning signs were overlooked or dismissed. While most women diligently check for lumps during self-examinations, I frequently encounter patients who've ignored other critical symptoms for months or even years. As someone who interprets thousands of mammograms and breast imaging studies annually, I want to share the subtle signs that often slip under the radar but deserve immediate attention," says Dr Namrata Singal Sawant, a Mumbai-based senior radiologist. She further shared with HT Lifestyle 5 subtle symptoms you shouldn't ignore and why early detection matters. 1. Changes in breast texture and appearance One of the most significant findings I encounter in my practice is architectural distortion, changes in breast skin texture that many patients attribute to normal ageing. The most common early signs of the same are: Any dimpling or puckering of the skin can suggest an underlying carcinoma pulling the skin or Cooper's ligament. Characteristic orange-peel appearance (peau d'orange) can be a sign of inflammatory breast carcinoma. Shrinking of the size of any one of the breasts. This can be seen in some lobular carcinomas, which are difficult to diagnose. Increase in the size of the breast. We must be aware of the natural asymmetry of our breasts, if any. Any increase in the size of the breast, especially asymmetrical, must be viewed with caution. We must contact our medical professional about this. Nipple changes and lymph node evaluations are often overlooked yet crucial in diagnosing breast cancer.(Pexels) 2. Nipple changes and discharge Nipple changes often provide crucial diagnostic clues that patients initially overlook. Nipple discharge, particularly when unilateral, spontaneous and blood-stained, has led me to identify high-risk lesions and early-stage ductal carcinomas. Nipple retraction. Some ladies give a history of their nipples being inverted from childhood. However, if the nipple retraction is a new finding, then it must be looked at with suspicion. Nipple directional changes or scaling. Many of the ductal abnormalities, like papillomas, papillary carcinomas, atypia, dysplasia, DCIS or even Intraductal carcinomas can present with any of the nipple symptoms. With the help of advance technologies especially high resolution ultrasonography, MRI and DR mammograms these diagnosis can be made at and much earlier stage. Further evaluation with guided biopsies are suggested. 3. Any lump in the armpits From my experience interpreting breast MRIs and ultrasounds, lymph node evaluation is a critical component that patients rarely consider during self-examinations. I've diagnosed several cases where palpable lymph nodes were the presenting symptom, leading to the discovery of occult breast cancers that weren't detectable through conventional screening. My clinical advice: Any palpable lump in the armpits must be evaluated with ultrasonography and SOS, as well as further investigations like FNAC, biopsy, mammography, MRI, etc. Even primary breast cancers are found in the axillary tail of the breast, which is found in the armpit. Any lymph node that remains palpable for more than two weeks, especially if it's firm, fixed, or progressively enlarging, requires immediate imaging evaluation with ultrasound and possible tissue sampling. 4. Any skin discolouration over the breast In my radiological practice, inflammatory changes represent some of the most challenging cases to diagnose early. Inflammatory breast cancer, while rare, can initially present as simple skin irritation that patients often treat with topical remedies for weeks before seeking medical attention. Through my imaging experience, I've learned that skin changes that don't respond to conservative treatment within 1-2 weeks, particularly when accompanied by breast swelling or warmth, require immediate evaluation with specialised imaging protocols. I've diagnosed several cases of inflammatory breast cancer where patients initially attributed symptoms to allergic reactions or skin conditions. 5. No signs at all I can not stress enough this last point that most of the breast cancers can only be caught at an early stage with the help of screening. Screening implies the patient does not have any complaints and still gets a routine checkup, and a mammography is done. According to the recommendations by the Breast Imaging Society of India (BISI), annual screening mammograms are recommended for those between the ages of 40 and 70. In case of high-risk individuals with a family history of breast cancer or BRCA 1 or 2 genes positive amongst others, the screening starts at a much earlier age. After years of interpreting breast imaging and counselling patients, I cannot stress enough the importance of trusting your instincts about your body. In my practice, I maintain an open-door policy for patients who notice changes, no matter how minor they may seem. Also, the take-home message again is that to diagnose this disease early, we must understand the importance of screening protocols and consult our medical professionals for annual clinical breast examinations.
